I have a lot of resources that I have borrowed/saved going back to when Old Scout was on here when it was the CAS-L. I am no gunsmith though but am an experienced tinkerer like many here who have learned by their mistakes. It starts when you get your first C&B and a Dremel. ;D

The word "Dremel" should never be used in a statement regarding gunsmithing.

Well, I made my first one in 1995, have been shooting them since then.   Until 2016, it was my only type of pistol, have since added two conversion cylinders for Remingtons.    In all that time, I have had 1 chain fire that emphatically know was from poor fitting caps, have had 1 hangfire when I was experimenting with paper cartridges (have moved to Guns of the West kit, awesome) and periodically will use wonder wads, especially when shooting all day, I think they help keep fouling limited, some don't, either way, they fall in that category (paraphrasing Jack Elam), "Don't mind if I shoot, it makes me feel better".   I seriously like the Colt design for cap and ball over the Remington, mainly the groves in the cylinder pin.   I am not experienced with conicals, have always shot balls.  That may not make me a guru, but like Tyrion, I drink coffee and know stuff.

So, what was your question, RRio?

My playthings since Jr High 😆 I have a goodly number of clean SASS & NCOWS matches behind me, mostly using C&B revolvers..but, that could just be a fluke.

Regarding use of a Dremel (or any tool)..my best advice is borrowed from Detective Harry Callahan - a man's got to know his limitations.

According to my calculations, Rudy has about six more years to do on that chain gang.

Stuff, like, are CCI caps worth a damn? Is there a falling cap fix ( saw Mike "Duke" Venturio's video on this).

R Rio,
CCI are OK. They are just not as forgiving as the Remington caps as to how many different makes of nipples they will fit. The CCIs as well as the RWS are fairly stiff in the shank and are harder to swage onto the nipple while seating if the nipple is a bit big compared to the Remington cap that is scalloped on the mouth and will more easily swell to grip the cap. I have 16 C&B for now (have owned about 35) and by swapping out the nipples with Uncle Mike's or Butler Creek nipples ALL 16 will fit the Remington #10 which is close in size to the CCI #11 or the RWS #1075 (AKA #11). The RWS #10 is way too small to have ever fit any gun I've owned. About 1/3 of my guns will accept the CCI#11 and another 1/3 will accept the RWS #11. The only gun I have that will fire the CCI#10 is my Uberti 3rd Model Dragoon which has a hammer fall like a musket. It will smash anything. I've only replaced the nipples on about 1/3 of my guns, the rest are stock.

As for cap fall, I'm not sure what you mean.

Fired caps jamming the works.

A cap post and an action shield is a good combination.

:) Well PLUS ONE for 45 Dragoon  ;)

And I completely forgot to nominate him in our list for Gurudom.  Sorry Mike!!  Meant no insult.  Just a pea poor memory.

RRio:  Must admit I have never heard it referred to as "Cap Fall."  What many of us call a "Cap Rake" (the post pictured by 45 Dragoon) is also considered a necessity to keep fired caps out of the lock works.

It isn't a case of "are CCI caps any good."  THE most important thing, is to use caps that FIT your nipples Properly.

Cap jam is a pretty thoroughly discussed problem for which there are multiple answers. The simplest things most anyone can do that will stop 90% of them are:
#1 Don't lighten the hammer spring excessively
#2 Swap out the nipples for ones with smaller flash holes (to prevent blowback of the hammer) using Slix-shot, Butler Creek, or Treso nipples
#3 Shoot lighter rather than max loads
#4 Slightly take the sharp edges off the safety notch on the hammer face to dull the edges so they are not so "grabby".
#5 Completely fill in that little safety notch that grabs spent caps. I actually had someone refer to it as the "Hellgate modification". The Pietta Colts have excessively wide safety notches compared to ASM guns. I use JB Weld but actually welding it flush would be best. I have never been able to get solder to stick to the case hardening on the hammer slot. Maybe some one can educated me on that.  I occasionally have to replace the JB Weld because it can get knocked out from shooting.

For the more gunsmithy types I have seen how to install a cap guard shield onto the recoil shield with a narrow slot to allow a narrorwed/reshaped hammer to fit through or to cut a slot into the hammer face and install a peg in the hammer cutout in the frame in front of the nipple. Both modifications prevent the spent cap from moving rearward but require modification of the hammer face. I once had a pistol that had the cap shield on it but caps would drag against it and make for harder cylinder rotation. I've never installed the peg system but I believe it works the best. All I have ever done is described in the first paragraph. I'm sure I have left something out.

Here's a prior discussion from CAS City with more stuff:  https://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php?topic=54411.0

I always used the C&B pistol "wrist shake" when cocking for the next shot in a match. Only had one time it failed me.
