Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad,
today would be their 92th Wedding Anniversary, December 1, 1929
Together they saw the Great Depression, WWII-Pearl Harbour, VE & VJ Day, Korea, Vietnam, JFK assignation, NASA's first flights & and the Moon Landings, the Shuttle and two Kids and two grandchildren.

They lived through, WW1, the Spanish Flu Pandemic, and were present in the crowd, the attempt to assassinate Franklin D Roosevelt March 6, 1933 in Miami.
Something of a noteworthy history, May God bless them.  :)

I'm been going through the Museum Gun safe
Added a 03 Springfield and a m1917 (Winchester) Enfield to the WW1 exhibit (guns have not been on display because they had not been deactivated) I pulled the firing pins and now they are in glass cases .
I also pulled a Thompson (current Karr brand) and a 03a3 Springfield for the Dec. 7 display. and will include two Arisaka's
I put a Garand out in the "Battle of the Budge" exhibit as well

I'll post some photos tonight.....  The credit goes to others on these displays

Oh ! btw meet Fritz the turtle  ;D

Does anyone remember one of the most infamous scandals in US history taking place 46 years ago.  The Man on Page 602 of the 1975 Fall and Winter Sears and Roebuck Catalog? ::)

Subject was brought up elsewhere and I remember it well.  Watergate was over and we thought we were moving forward when this popped up or rather out. ::)

Unfortunately I do remember that. It was the scandal of the neighborhood, OMG, the terribleness!

Sears claimed it was a blob in printing, and had not showed up in the spring catalogue, using the same photo.

I guess that winter everybody had nothing else to talk about....

Another fact from the era:

In 1978, Astrophysicist May, while working with Mercury, hypothesized that the rotation of the earth was due to the expansive posterior region of youthful females. This hypothesis has never been refuted in over 40 years, and at this point can practically be considered as fact.

Sunny. High 59F. Winds light and variable.

Starting to horde up provisions for the wife’s 3-week trip to the land of the cold (Sorry Slim).  I prefer to avoid grocery stores as much as the plague or COVID.

Currently I am sitting in Great Falls for my monthly dues to Uncle Sam.

It’s been a long week for me, 2 trips to Helena, and now Great Falls. I had a friend from the Air Force come into Helena for a visit with some other friends and took a couple days out in Missoula. It was a fun time with lots of junk food.

I have glanced in from time to time. Everything seems the same.

Chatting with Little Brother early this morning. He was in route to Dallas from Missoula, then to Cleveland. Said it had turned cold and was starting to snow in the Kid’s  home place.

Glen hope you got the antibiotics started and you recover soon.

Roger I am bit envious of the work you are doing. The display are awesome. Your talent in building display and knowledge of what’s in them are a plus.
Hope your Pearl Harbor day display is equally as great.

To the other Major/Jeffery. I bet your still not getting ( well the algorithms here won’t let me spell out notification ) your notices .

Kid get you cold weather gear out.

The rest of you keep your powder and backyard dry.

Will look in again around Christmas

Evening all.

Good to see you on the right side of the sod, Roo. It is indeed cold and white here in ZooTown. Actually had to bust out the Carhartt yesterday. It only accumulated about 4-5 inches of white stuff, but it was really wet and slippery, then the temperature dropped more, so the whole city got a sheet of ice. According to local news, there were nearly 100 reported accidents, 4 fatalities. I saw no less than a dozen throughout the day. The Mrs made me drive her home.

In other news, I’m heading to Spokane tomorrow for my final interview with CBP. From there it’s just a polygraph and a fitness test.

After a crazy week of unpacking, repacking, decorating (indoor and out) got the wife to the airport for her pilgrimage to Milwaukee.

For those that were up as early as we were:
The water’s hot, the coffee’s brewed, teabags are in the canister (haven’t gotten to doing loose tea yet, as I still don’t taste the paper bag unless I eat it).

Weather here is turning:

TODAY THU 12/09 HIGH 41 °F

92% Precip. / 0 in
Snow this morning will give way to some clearing this afternoon. High 41F. Winds NNW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of snow 90%. Snow accumulations less than one inch.

Still our lower ski hill is planning on opening tomorrow.  I guess they plan on using the next week of colder weather to allow snow making on the Hill.

Cat’s and I are going into hibernation for the rest of the day.  We may start wreaking havoc tomorrow.

Afternoon all.

I have successfully navigated the I-90 corridor the the far lands of Spokane, WA and back. Mother Nature threw a white out at me between the Idaho border and St. Regis both directions, but I made it safely. The reason for the trip: CBP interview. I did well enough to keep my tentative selection status, so I guess I have that going for me. Next weekend I make the pilgrimage to Whitefish, MT to get a taste of the job.

Current weather in Missoula is 31 with little flakes falling but not sticking.

The snow we were supposed to get yesterday morning amounted to about ¼ in. and lasted all of about an hour before melting.
However, it seems this weekend we are looking at a couple feet of more of the white stuff up on the Hill, at and above 7000 ft.  That should give most of the ski areas a boost!  It will probably cause major problems getting over the Hill to California, but as I don’t plan on going there it won’t bother me!  As long as it stays above 6000 ft. it won’t bother me.  If it drops lower, I have tested the snow blower and it’s operational.  The three of us can fort-up and stay warm.

Made I through today with no precip. of any sort.  Haven’t heard of anything going over the summit yet, but this is what we are still looking at as a possibility:

Greater Lake Tahoe Area, NV
...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 10 PM THIS EVENING TO 10 PM PST TUESDAY...
* WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 feet, except 4 to 8 feet above 7000 feet. Sierra ridge winds could exceed 100 mph with periodic gusts to 50 mph in the lower elevations.
* WHERE...Greater Lake Tahoe Area.
* WHEN...From 10 PM this evening to 10 PM PST Tuesday.
* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible, especially starting Sunday night. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage. Secure holiday decorations to prevent them from blowing away.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The heaviest snow is expected Sunday night into Tuesday morning when snowfall rates could reach 2-3 inches per hour. Strong winds will produce hazardous boating conditions on Lake Tahoe with wave heights of 3 feet or more.

It seems like us folks at 5000 ft are still ok!

In this case, the donation from the family of Brig. General Rodger D. Young.
General Young was a survivor of Pearl Harbor, a pilot lieutenant at Hickam Field.
He returned to Arizona and trained for B-25's; he flew 54 combat missions in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

I accessioned Gen. Young's flight suit (circa 1975) his Oversea cap (C-cap) his Command flag (Burgee) and his US flag.

Is this cool job or what?  ;D

Indeed, General Young is a familiar name to this MTANG Airman. Our Airman of the Quarter award is named in his honor, as is the Commander’s briefing room. That was when we were the 120th Fighter Wing (currently Airlift Wing), and flying F-102 aircraft as escorts to Malmstrom’s B-36 and B-52 fleets. Small world indeed.

Morning all.

Currently 25 degrees and slightly overcast. I will be making a trip to Drummond today, home of the “World Famous Bill-Shippers.” I’m not sure what exactly that means, but they’re proud enough about it to have a 60’ sign on the highway for it. My trip involves septic tanks, not bulls, so I guess I’ll have to find out some other time.

Very Cool Kid.... I intend to set a full mannequin in his flight suit w/ BTW has his leather name tag attached and
his flight-Cap, between his Burgee & the US standard, I'm requesting a portrait photo from the family (perhaps) or another source, we can copy for the display.
I will also highlight his service on plaque for display.

“Bull Shipper”  it was once the main shipping point of young cattle to (Bull Calves) to the feed lots. Using pens at Rail road and the highway system. Ranchers from all around the North West brought cattle there.
It is no longer a thing. However Drummond was the place the original “Testicle Festivsl” was held.

Just got a call from Rita's friend Peg, they left here at 4:30, the other knee is done, they decided she was going to take her, not me.   Probably for the best much better but still having some problems. ::)  Something they call cough syncope, almost over that too but since it means you momentarily black out they didn't want me driving on the Interstate.   Guess I did it for about 2 minutes Thursday coming home and had a mild seizure with it, don't know, I wasn't there. ::)  Dr says when lungs fully clear it should go away.

Here in Northwestern Nevada, (Virginia City to be exact) we have the Virginia City Rocky Mountain Oyster Fry. In March on the weekend closet to St Patties Day.
This is the description from their web site:

Have a ball (or a few!) alongside 7,000 other daring revelers for a party that only the Comstock could throw. Typically occurring each March, during St. Patrick’s Day weekend, this beloved annual event takes over the entire town, combining the Rocky Mountain Oyster tastings, and an Irish-themed bar crawl in historic saloons throughout town. Part of the events scene in historic Virginia City for many years, sample tasty testes from cooks competing for the title of Best Rocky Mountain Oyster Cook in the West with chefs preparing these “delecta-ball” delicacies in a way that’ll sure make you forget what you’re really chowing down on. Sample Rocky Mountain Oysters grilled, smoked, deep fried or even in a taco.  Or, go balls out and try them all!

They have a judging category for best presentation, the last time I was up there it went to an outfit that had a platter called two balls and a brat.  You can image the layout.

It should be back to it’s old self in 2022!

A fellow from Montana decided to retire somewhere warm, so he sold his ranch and moved to the coast of Mexico. Had a beautiful little place in a charming town that had weekly bullfights and one day he went to the local cantina after the fight and the waiter told him they had Rocky Mountain Oysters. He was thrilled and tried them. They were fantastic, the best he had ever had. There after, every week he would go and enjoy them until one week when they brought them to him, they were tiny! He called the waiter over and asked him what was going on. The waiter shrugged and said "Senor, the bull, he not always lose...".

49 here right now and supposed to be real pretty tomorrow.

Evening all.

We had some minor weather here. 10mph winds and some light snow. Only accumulated about 2”. I was in Phillipsburg for work, and it was 8 degrees there before wind. I also slid down a steep section of road and ended up about 200 yards out in a field at the bottom. I think it scared the cows there more than me. Nobody got hurt, no fences were smashed, and I got out without leaving the driver seat.

They had some twisters down in Iowa, near where my sister lives, but she made it through with just mild winds and a little rain.

Afternoon all.

Overcast and 25 in Missoula at current. We’re supposed to be getting a good size winter storm through in a couple hour. According to local news it’s around Superior right now. They’re saying total white out, with 50mph winds and over three inches of white stuff per hour. In town we’re forecast for between 4-6 inches, but it’s supposed to pick up steam and dump a foot or more to the East.

On the agenda today, I’m currently working a new cast iron pan. I got it from a fellow at work who made the move to T-Fal and gave away his cast. This particular pan is a 12” Lodge skillet that never really got used. I sanded the factory coating off, then smoothed the inside down to 220 grit, and am in the process of seasoning it back up to “sunny side up” capable.

My teaching doc on the subject:

Seasoning Cast Iron

Once we have the piece cleaned and down to bare metal, we need to get it seasoned, this is where it gets confusing for many, despite much of the information out there today, seasoning is not just a coating of an oil that has been heated up for a specific time in an oven at a specific temperature, usually said to be 350F, this misconception causes by far the majority of the problems people have with cast iron cookware with both cooking with it and cleaning with it. So what is seasoning and how do we do it?

The proper seasoning of a cast iron cooking piece is where a thin coating of oil is carbonized in a process similar to making charcoal, the volatile parts of the oil burn off leaving a polymer carbon coating (long chain molecules) that form a fairly non-stick surface on the top of the bare metal, filling the minute pores as well. Different cooking oils and fats carbonize at different temperatures; the point at where they start this process is called the “smoke point” because the volatile substances in the oils start to burn off creating the smoke. The carbonized oils left behind that coat the iron will not burn off till temperatures of 800 to 1000F are reached, beyond any normal cooking temperatures.

Today there are products on the market made and sold specifically for seasoning cast iron, I have never used any of these, and I have never had any problems seasoning cast iron with the different cooking oils and fats, many of those who have used them claim good results, but I have never had anything less than good results using normal cooking oils and fats, also if you think these products are some sort of magic, think again, they are mostly either soy bean/Canola oil for the liquid ones, or beeswax based for the solid ones with some soy or other oils added.

A quick check shows the liquid ones are about $7-$10 for 8 ounce, the solid is around $10 for 6 ½ ounce unless you decide to buy it in the handy container that looks like stick deodorant and then it is $10 for slightly over 2 ½ ounces. For comparison a bottle of soy bean oil in the liter size can be bought many times for around $1, I find this interesting because no matter what oil you use as we discussed above, you end up with carbon, also most instructions that come with these do not recommend heating high enough to fully burn off the volatile substances, this is not seasoning, but heated up oils.

The following is a list of some of the common cooking oils and fats listing the smoke point, (sources will show slightly different temps, it depends on the exact composition of the fat/oil which can vary slightly, and this is just a guide with averages). I really don’t have a favorite for actual seasoning, I normally use corn oil because it is fairly cheap and I use it some in the kitchen, the bottle is easy to grab.

Safflower Oil…………………………510F/265C
Soybean Oil…………………………..450F/230C
Peanut Oil……………………………..450F/230C
Corn Oil………………………………….450F/230C
Sunflower Oil…………………………440F/225C
Beef Tallow…………………………….400F/205C
Canola Oil……………………………….400F/205C
Grape seed Oil…………………………390F/195C
Lard………………………………………..370F/185C
Vegetable Shortening………………360F/180
Coconut Oil……………………………..350F/175C
Extra-Virgin Olive Oil…………………350F/175C

Although seasoning is not difficult, it is a step that many seem to have trouble with, one problem many have is when they are done, the piece is sticky and gummy feeling, this is a result of putting too much oil and fat on the surface before attempting to carbonize it as well as not getting the piece hot enough to carbonize the fats/oils. The other is the piece does not have a good non-stick surface, also a result of not getting the piece hot enough to carbonize the fats/oils fully.

Let’s address the using to much oils and fats first, I prefer cooking oils which are liquid at room temperature for seasoning, just because they are easier to work with on cold cast iron, I take a rag with the oil on it and I wipe and coat the surface to be seasoned with the oil, I then take a clean dry rag (paper towel will work) and I wipe as much of the oil back off as I can, just leaving a thin film. With a fat that is solid at room temperature it is best to heat the piece up above the melting point of the fat and wipe as much back off as you can just like the oil, one just has to be careful not to burn yourself in the process. The secret to seasoning is to not get more than a very thin film on it; any extra will just make a gummy surface. I have often seen it recommended turning the piece up-side down and putting a cookie sheet under the piece to catch any drips, but if you have enough that it will drip, you have too much on the surface already, it is better to remove all you can with the dry rag, it’s ok to do it up-side down, but if it’s on right it won’t drip.

So now we are ready to heat the piece up and carbonize the oils/fats, so how high do we heat it? Well if one wants to make it a bit scientific, then look at the smoke point of the oil/fat you are using and go a little higher than the smoke point, many sources today say 350F for seasoning which is barely the smoke point of the lowest oils and who is to say 350F on the dial is 350F inside, instructions often say to recoat it and heat it several times to build it up, done right it’s not needed.

I have found that no matter what oil/fat I am using, I put the piece in the oven, turn the thermostat to the last notch before the broiler kicks in and let it run a ½ hour or so or when it quits smoking. On my oven control it says 550F and my thermometer says it’s about 530F, I am not sure which is right, but when the piece cools I give it a thin coat of oil and it is ready to use. If you use the high temperature and really carbonize the oils, there is no need to repeat several more times; all you do is risk building up a heavy thickness that can even be prone to flaking off.

Our properly seasoned oven is now ready to use, forget these warnings about not using metal utensils in it, “you’ll scrape off the seasoning” if it does you didn’t season it right.

This piece was cast a bit rough (more so than usual), and all of the little bumps in it just annoyed me. Also, I didn’t have anything better to do than sand it, so it wasn’t a terrible inconvenience.

Regarding seasoning, my go-to process is to give it a light coat of extra virgin olive oil, toss it in the 400 degree oven until it stops smoking, and call her good.

Above the smoke point so good, I just use what is at hand, most often sunflower or corn and do the full bore to get it done.   I laugh because my newer Lodge stuff that ain't polished is the most non-stick, not that any of it is a problem.  I just love it though when some of these yuppies who have bought a little cast iron and watch videos try to tell me what I've been doing for 50-60 years won't work.  Right close to 60 at least. ::)  One of my most well liked teaching memes.  ;D

Why you can’t make bread like Grandma’s

How many times have you heard someone say that they just can’t make bread like their grandma, many times even mentioning they have the recipe grandma wrote down for them? Most times if the person is any kind of a cook, the bread they make is fine; it just doesn’t have quite the taste of Grandma’s.

When ever anyone mentions this, something I discovered many years ago comes to mind, my brother loves homemade bread, but he had told me one time that it was good, very good, but just didn’t taste like Grandma’s bread did and he was right. He wanted to know if I had Grandma’s recipe, but she never used one that I ever saw, not for just plain old white bread, she just mixed it up, they way I do it, a couple tablespoon’s of lard, maybe a teaspoon or so of sugar, a dash of salt and work in enough flour for a stiff dough.

Well as I started traveling around with my cook camp, I noticed that my bread tasted different at different places, not a lot, but it was different, none of which was exactly like Grandma’s. I realized the places I went to had well water, and depending on where it was, it tasted different. I also remember a class I had on water treatment years before I remembered something from the class, a lot of national brands of many items uses water treatment to make them taste the same where ever they are made.

I also remembered Grandma’s bread was never quite the same after she moved to town. What I did the next time we were hunting at the farm was to use the water out of the well. The well has very old pipes and a slight nitrate level, not serious, but we just haul our drinking water from Lincoln and refill at the neighbors who has a much better well. At supper time, my brother went over to the dutch oven full of bread, got himself a couple large pieces, covered it with butter and took a bite. The look on his face was priceless, “you did find Grandma’s recipe!”
I had to tell him again, there was no written down recipe I’d ever seen. “You had better remember what you did different, this is Grandma’s bread.” I explained what I had done and now when I’m at the farm I use the water from the well.

her of my well liked one, this has people going Duh, why didn't I think of that.

That actually explains why my pancakes never taste the same as Grandma’s did. She had her pancakes down to a science, weighing the ingredients to the gram. I have tried to duplicate it, with the same meticulous measurements, but never got it the same. But she used water from the well on her property, and I bet that is the difference. Alas, I will never access that well again, as it is no longer a family possession, but at least now I know.

Regarding cast iron maintenance, what do you suggest Del? I will let the pan cool after cooking, rinse with hot water and wipe it out with a paper towel for cleaning, and depending on what I cooked, I will give it a light coat of oil (especially if I cooked something acidic like tomatoes or peppers). But for my little 6” skillet that I use to make breakfast (eggs and fried bread), I just wipe it with a towel the next morning. Both work well.

Sadly, I never knew my Mothers Mother she passed when my mom was just a young girl.
And barely knew my Dad's mother as she passed when I was 4, I do know she was a grand master in the kitchen, from stories told.

So, no grandmothers to relate to, I did have a aunt (Mom's sister) and her Cats head biscuits were desirable enough to die for.
She used water from her cold NC mountain spring.
I've never found anything quite like hers.

And her garden grown and cooked with her spring water Collards were slap your momma good.

Cleaning and Care of Cast Iron

Once the cast iron is seasoned and is used to cook with, we come to having to properly clean it after use, this is another place where the methods differ between people, I have seen long internet discussions on this that have almost turned hostile, most seem to think the seasoning on cast iron is delicate, which as we discussed above, it is not if done properly.

I will state right now those words that cause all kinds of problems in discussions on cleaning cast iron, “I am not afraid to use dish soap in my cast iron” in fact if something really greasy has been cooked in it like a pork roast, I will use it to help get rid of the excess grease which can turn rancid. I also am not afraid to use scrubbing pads such as the green and brown 3M type or even stainless steel ones. What are not hard to remove are any oils that are on the surface of the seasoning, these may have been put on to preserve the piece from rust or it may be left over from cooking. I often cook large meals that use 10-12 dutch ovens and most times I am doing everything on my own, it just makes things easier and quicker and since there is truly no harm in doing it, why make things more difficult than it needs to be?

Many times I have been told to not use soap because the pores in the cast iron will soak up the soap and anything cooked in it will have soap in it. Well the surface of the cast iron has some microscopic pores in it, true, although the carbonized oils do fill them, but what is more important is if these pores are not fully filled with the seasoning any soap that goes in is so minute as to not be noticed, plus it will rinse out just fine, the cast iron is not as porous as many think as well as the seasoning filling and sealing any pores.

One argument I’ve seen a lot is that “people way back then didn’t clean with soap.”  I have studied a lot of the old cook books with their hints and other documents and I can not find anything to confirm this.  I include the title page from on of the most famous books of the late 19th Century and the information inside on cleaning with soap.  Mrs Lincoln ran The Boston Cooking School and one of her students was Fanny Farmer who would later be the principal and would go on to write here own cook book.

Then there is the fact that most if not all the now defunct old makers recommend soap as well as Lodge today. Many will tell you there Mom and Grandma taught them not to use soap, well that’s fine and dandy but both of mine taught me to use it.  With that it might not be a good idea to go down that road since besides what I present above, I have also been using it for almost 60 years and have never damaged a true and proper seasoning with any type of soap or detergent.

In the pictures you will see a couple dutch ovens soaking in a big claw foot sink, yes they are mine, no harm was done.
Another item to use for those really tough to clean messes is washing soda (Sodium carbonate which is not the same as baking soda or Sodium Bicarbonate) available in the same area as laundry detergent in most stores. This is not soap, but it does soften the water so it cleans better than plain water, a lot of the water in wells where I cook is very hard and this just helps my dish soap work better.

One item often said to be bad on cast iron is the dish washer, I do not having one of these devices so I can’t say I have never tried one with cast iron, but rather than the dish washer itself being the problem, my thoughts are it’s the piece sitting wet in that damp environment that causes the problem, wash a cast iron piece with any method using water and let it slowly dry in a damp environment and you will get rusting, not anything you can’t fix, but it will rust.

A good seasoning protects them.  Why oil it to let it collect dirt and dust?    You are making it harder than it has to be and that is one of the principals of Yuppism, make it harder than it needs to be.  Next thing you'll be buying a Prius and trying to pickm your nose through you ass hole at stop lights. ::)

Whoa now. Next you’re going to tell me to cut my man bun and and stop drinking $13 locally sourced double-IPA microbrews. :o

I read a thing the other day on a different website on which I am a contributor where a fellow was talking about a process he called “starching in” his cast iron. I hadn’t ever heard of this, but apparently it’s a popular thing among the yuppie cast iron crowd. Apparently after their over-the-top seasoning process, the last step is that they will fry a potato to charcoal in the pan as a way to “add carbonized starch to the season for a harder coating.” It sounds like a potato’s worth of cow pie to me. But apparently the suburban like it.

Now if we could get the panic-mongers to give us a break, maybe we can enjoy the holidays.

#1 Daughter and her family coming up to stay overnight Friday.
Wife has been practicing Christmas Carols on the piano for several weeks now, just to get the kinks out of her fingers. Anticipate a relaxing Christmas morning. Cinnamon buns and wife's world famous bacon, egg and cheese casserole to bake, stockings hanging on the mantle to empty of goodies, then coffee with Irish Cream and some presents to open.
Conference call with Daughter #2 and her family in Chicago to share news.

In the mood for a grilled steak today. Weather will hit 50º or so. Wife picked out a nice slab o' dead bovine meat that I've lovingly rubbed with "The Rub".
And then helping the Mrs. clean house in preparation for the weekend.

Never made it to the LGS yesterday (I was going just to go), I'll remedy that today, not looking for anything particular.
Besides it's a good excuse to have lunch @ the China Buffet.

Museum is closed Christmas day, so I scheduled myself for all day Christmas Eve Day and Boxing Day so the other curator can have a long Xmas weekend with his family.
My Daughter will be down Saturday and we can celebrate then.

Headed to the ER in a bit, O2 levels have been great but they dropped over the day, that and some other things make me think the pneumonia is coming back.   I hope they have a bed for me and put me on IV antibiotics because it's not a viral type, that's why my vaccination didn't stop it.

Last day of school, got Lexie through finals, big relief, been afraid it was coming back but with Rita down it would be hard to get her to school and home.

I told Ted (my friend/owner) he should charge rent on the space it's taking up cause it will be camped out there a long time at the asking price.... he agreed but that's what the owner said he wanted for it  ::)

Afternoon all and belated Merry Christmas.

Had a lazy day yesterday. We just stayed around the house, took the dog down to the river, and then returned to our lazing. I made some pork chops with peppers and mashed potatoes for chow. Bing Crosby’s wish came true and we got another 2-3 inches.

My parents, siblings, grandmother and a friend of my sister’s will be here Thursday or Friday, depending on weather. The house will be full, but I suppose that’s part of the Christmas experience.

Plans for the rest of today include more lazing, and possibly a brief squirrel hunt with the floppy-eared one. This morning we went to the feed store and bought more grain for the horse, which might have sapped my “out in public” motivation. We’ll see.

Further updates as events warrant.

Welp, today was the day someone left the lid off the fruit loops jar or the gate to Happy farm open!

This guy comes in and says "Who do I look like?'

I'm thinking something like Capt. Jack Sparrow but I can't think of the Actors name ...

mostly because I'm in awe, eye shadow, beaded dread locks, rings, gorget breast plate, tattoos and a Yameka.

well,.... I was wrong, "he said he was the second coming" ...and then it got weird, weirder.

he said "He was the CAPTAIN"
He preached, sang and held a cut glass sugar bowl over his head...   this guy was way over the coo coo nest

This guy made me a might concerned.... :o
...cut glass sugar bowl over his head he said was "for the Blood "(real blood" he said, of his "inaudible" flock. :-\

His accent made it hard to completely understand much of what he was rambling about....

I was hoping someone was coming with a NET!   anybody!  any net!

I remained calm and try to appear I was not a threat.  especially each time he reaches into his backpack (3 times)

I hit all hands-on deck button, and fortunately he decided to move on without any further drama.

Are you sure it wasn't Depp? He's known for being a few fries short of a happy meal.

Quite sure, one of the spookiest things, he wants to show me his treasures, and went to his into his backpack three times.

One was the afore mentioned cut glass sugar bowl, though the first thing was a single USFA Staff Sergeant Chevron.
The third?  I never saw what that was...as that is when a museum volunteer showed up.

Unaware, if he was threat, or the 3rd item might be a weapon... my hand was in my pocket and the clutching my carry gun

Yeah, it got that real !

Morning all.

Weather here has been holding steady around 0F, with little snow showers here and there.

I have today off work, something about “not enough work to go around.” Fair enough, I’ll live and consume too much coffee at home.

Finally got an appointment at the county courthouse to sign the paperwork to make the Mrs my official Mrs in the eyes of the IRS and DOD. One wouldn’t think it would be terribly difficult to get 3 signatures, but apparently it is. So at 9am on Monday, I can officially change my tax status.

Well, the wife made it back from Milwaukee yesterday.  Got home to a tad over six inches of white stuff down here at 5000ft, There’s a little over 10 ft up at Lake Tahoe, and even more at the Sierra crest.  I80 was closed from Christmas until 3:00PM yesterday due to deep sn@w and white-out conditions.  Winds were pushing 100MPH in some places.

Nice and calm today with some sun and a high of 39.  Looks like no precep. for the next week or so.  Getting ready for New Years Eve.

We're looking at some white precipitation this weekend. AccuWeather has it pegged at somewhere between 1" to 8" . . .

Last day of the year,

I expect my neighbor, several property's away will have his bi-annual fireworks display. I heard a test shot yesterday.
I think he must either work with a Pyrotechnic Company or have access to professional devices.
He puts on quite an ariel show for the New Year & the 4th of July.

No plans beyond that, avoiding crowds has become a way of life anyway.  ::)

Here's hoping, we finally turn the corner on the pandemic, I hope each of you have a Happy New Year.  :)

Morning all.

Got about 4 inches of white stuff last night.  Just enough to make the roads slick. Current temp is 10, WC -2.

My family is over in Billings, and will be heading this way shortly. They should get here around 4:30.

Merry/Happy Last Day .  Also known as amateur night.

Still pushing earth down. Not much else. Haven’t been out of house but 5 or 6 times this past year.  4 times for the doc visits. I haven’t driven in nearly two years.  Good news is I have nearly caught up on YouTube videos. I think I have seen all 6 million of them now.  ::)

Hope you all are doing well- staying warm and dry.

Happy 2022 to all of you
