Question on legal guns for NCOWS use.
« on: January 16, 2006, 04:08:54 PM »
I have read the current NCOWS approved and not approved lists and the guns I am looking at are not listed.  Could y'all help me out with a little information on if they are legal or if they are up for discussion in Febuary at the conference.

Gun #1 Taurus  Goucho .45 Colt

Gun #2  Rossi 92 carbine .45 Colt

Thanks for any help

We didn't use to list every gun that was legal.  It was felt that any SAA clone would be okay.  I still think this appies unless it has some obvious feature such as a birdshead grip that orginals didn't have.  Things like fram mounted firing pins have always been allowed.

All the 92 clones are approved as far as I know.  I have a Rossi that was my second NCOWS rifle.

Without looking, I think the Gaucho is approved but not positive on that.  The Rossi '92 is okay, I happen to have one myself.

Thanks Will and Ornery,

I just happened to get of work early today.  So I stopped by the gun shop on my way home and checked them out.  They were decent priced and the Gaucho's were cheaper than the Vaqueros I was looking at.  Maybe new perchases in the future know that they are legal.

Howdy, Bristow Kid!

You got a couple good ones, there.  I have a Rossi '92, but it is the Sporting Rifle version, with a 24" 1/2 round - 1/2 octagonal barrel in 45 Colt.  The Gaucho seems to be well thought of by the people who've got them, and we all know that Taurus makes good, solid, quality firearms that don't break the bank.  Kinda like how Ruger started.

If you feel the need to slick up that new '92, you can do it yerself with the help of Marauder's website:  http://www.marauder.homestead.com/irons.html

OR, if yer not so mechanicy ... er, meckanikly ...er, the Do-It-Yourself type, you can send it to the man known as "The Rossi 92 Specialist;" otherwise known as Steve Young - aka Nate Kiowa Jones.  http://stevesgunz.com/MainSG.htm

Have fun!

Will, Ketchum, The fact that NCOWS didn't list every gun that was approved is what got NCOWS into trouble to begin with. Myself I think it's a good idea. That way there are no questions. If a gun hasn't been voted on by the congress than it's not approved.

The Taurus Gaucho was approved during the last Congress, in Nov. 2005.  The Rossi 92 has been on the approved list for several years.  Hope this is of help.

Stay away from the Brass Framed 92, it is NOT approved.  Look forward to having you join our great organization.

I heard somewhere that USFA Rodeo's are not legal for NCOWS because of the flat black finish.  Does anyone know if that's true or not?  The pistol itself is a closer copy to a 1st gen Colt than almost anything out there; maybe closer to the 1st gen than a 3rd gen Colt is! ;D

Thanks!

JD, I b'lieve that's correct.  Matte black just didn't happen back then unless ya got caught in one he**uva sandstorm!

Also, the "Millenium" finish by Uberti (I think) is a no-no.  Or probably ANY future finishes of the matte type.  Personally, I think it ruins an otherwise fine firearm!  ( Please exclude that opinion when referring to modern - after 1900 - military/police/tactical weapons.  ::) )

Well, that's too bad.  The Rodeo is the least expenive SA of the USFA line.  Precisely because of the finish--it's the easiest for them.

But I'm not too worried, I'm experiencing a strong pull to the Dark Side.... got one '58 Remmie so far.

Thanks for the info!

Joss - ya beat me to it.  I was gonna suggest the same thing.

You COULD also have it re-blued after ya got rid of the matte finish, but I kinda like the streaky, worn-lookin' blue or browned finishes, meown sef.

J.D.,
What Joss and Steel Horse said is correct (French Jack may want to chime in here), it is really the finish that kept it from getting approved. If it is removed, it would be just fine...

Guys! Shhhhhh! Yer givin' away all of Vaughn Trueman's secrets! Seriously, that is THE way to go to get a 'new' gun to look like an 'old' gun.
Back in my 'Skinner days we would buy CVA Mt. Rifle kits in .50, use the same method described above, add a handful of Tea-soaked Brass Tacks on the stock and defy anyone to pick out an original from a kit gun when laid side by side. Most couldn't. My Navy Arms 12 SxS got the same treatment and I was offered mucho denaro many, many times for it just because of the 'old' finish, still have it and still laugh about it!
Yep, Birchwood-Casey's 'Plum Brown' is a real easy way to get the effect you want and it is so easy to use, but of course if you really want a gunsmith to do the work, Vaughn is one of the best and can probably make it look like it just came out of a Lineshack Cabin up on the High Lonesome!
Best regards and good sanding!
'Ol Gabe
