Paper cartridges
« on: April 20, 2022, 08:31:38 AM »
Let's just say that I have learned how to NOT make them. I watched some videos, thought I could take a shortcut or two. I'm really glad that I invested in that nipple wrench. Back to the drawing board.

Been using Dustin Winegars kit, works great for me.  Real simple and quick way to do round balls:  Cut the cigarette paper in half, roll on the former, trim the bottom if needed, then glue on the end cap.  leave the top uncut.  Place in die, dump in powder charge, then drop in the ball, squeeze the ball down tight on the powder, then twist the paper shut atop the ball.  Done.  I like to dip the ball end in melted lube, or you can just lube over the ball in the revolver.

I also use Dustin's paper cartridge kit, and it works great.  I am shooting .36 and found a conical bullet that works really well in making paper cartridges.  It is a heeled .375 diameter lead conical bullet intended for the original 38 Short / Long Colt.  It has a long heel and the top is rounded from Old West Bullet Moulds available in 125 and 150 grains weights.  Since the top of the conical is round, it is not deformed when I ram them in my Pietta 1851 Navy.  I use 20 grains of 3 Fg APP and no lube, since APP recommends not using lube.  They shoot great

Yeah Dustin’s kit is truly the best out there.

 :)  Ah Well   ;)

I must also admit I have also learned how NOT to make Paper Cartridges.  Simply stated, Don't Start.  I did sit down with the complete paraphernalia to "Roll My Own" and soon discovered it to be like finger nails down a Blackboard.  Talk about a time waister.  Well, at least for me it was a HUGE time waister.  Took forever to roll 60 rounds and only about There and a Half minutes to shoot em all up.

I find it much faster to use my Cylinder Loading Stand and reload my Cap Guns between stages.  There is also a thing in the manufacturing world about reducing the number of "touches" of the components in an item.  Making paper cartridges just takes two many touches for my patience.

Not that any of the above provided any assistance to the OP.  However, the Cartridge Box Labels Major 2 produces are just flat the BIZ!!!!  Most KOOL!!

I had much better luck using coffee filter paper than cigarette paper.  I nitrated them (using stump remover that is KNO3, check the label, some are not).  They are more durable, combust just fine and are easier to handle overall.  Did a lot of them watching baseball games...

I opened those two images with Microsoft Office Picture Manager and clicked on "Auto-Correct" - brightened them up quite a bit!  they still seem a little small, but that's for the end user to deal with.  :)

I've been using the Star and Bullock kit for several months now, with excellent results.  Yes, it does take more time overall to make the cartridges ahead of time, but makes things much easier and quicker during a match.  I have much more time to help with the posse and generally kibbutz.  I've used the cigarette papers provided with the kit and had 100% reliability with all the cartridges I've made so far - about 200.

Plus, you get a lot of interest from posse members and "style points".  ;D

I do the same thing.  I started back when you could buy salt peter at any drug store.  Then I had to move to stump remover.
Scouts Out!

I've used stump remover and the papers and mandrel sold by this shop on Etsy. Good results.

Being retired and having a brand new Uberti “London” 1851 Navy I decided to try my hand at rolling paper cartridges to go along with the .38 Short Colt conversion brass cartridge Krist Konnversion setup.
All the snuff was there from rolling cartridges of the Sharps. Plenty of Colt cartridge Works bullets were cast thanks to Mark Hubs Eras Gone Moulds so why not?
Should be easy right?
Same thing, right?
NO! That .16” difference makes it not easy.
The Mesa Winds tool I use is all aluminum very well made former and was priced right.  It took a while to master making those tiny tubes but the former works like a charm.
From time to time knocking out a dozen or so is just for fun.
Now I am waiting for better weather to burn up some of them.
