The military S&W 1899s should have 3 serial numbers and they should match. They are located on the butt, on the bottom side of the barrel and on the cylinder. The ones on the barrel and on the cylinder are really small and would be easy to over look. As said earlier the numbers on the crane, ect are production numbers.

Serial number range US Navy, 5001-6000. US Army, 13001-14000.
