My father-in-law built his smoker out of an old refrigerator that was solid metal, not plastic. He would throw a handful of soaked hickory chips on what seemed like a fire built with two chopsticks and a wooden match, close that door, and several hours later have a wonderful smoked brisket.

Happy New year,all!

Big changes here. My Boss has been removed, and we're working with a new manager. I'm on call for this weekend, first time in months. New guy is making some improvements to the infrastructure, plus we've got to learn the paperwork side of things now to help him out.

With the loss of two of our dogs, we're adjusting to the new pup and her way of telling us things.

We had pork and kraut last night at midnight at home ::) don't care much to get out with the crazies ::)

Wrote this up 4-5 years ago, it's so funny how people will believe things with out question.

Nice story, but Uncle Billy wasn't that dumb folks.

In the South there is a tradition of eating Black-Eyed Peas on New years for good luck, the origins of this are a bit murky, I will give the information I have and leave any conclusions to you.  The most common story as to how it started is in late 1864 when William Tecumseh Sherman did his famous March to the Sea from Atlanta to Savanna they of course lived off the land.  The story goes that the Union troops thought of Cow Peas as fit only for livestock feed and left them instead of taking them.   Being glad at their good luck of having these at least to eat the New Years tradition was started to celebrate their good luck.

But there are a couple of things to think about with that one, first, Sherman’s army had thousands of horses that needed fed and forage for them was harder to find than for the men, so why would they ignore that well known source?   But it goes deeper than that, the eating of cow peas on Rosa Hashana the Jewish New Year goes back to Biblical times; in fact it goes back to Egypt.   In the 18th Century there were a fair amount of Sephardi Jews from the Iberian Peninsula who settled in Northern Georgia and may have helped bring this tradition to the Gregorian New year celebration.   At this point it’s hard to know the real truth, but it is food for thought.

There is a lesser known one that says Uncle Billy and his bummers stole all the pecans in Georgia also, so everyone had to have oatmeal pie that year for Christmas instead of pecan pie.  In fact this happened before pecans were introduced from Texas to Georgia, before the rolled oats to make the pie was invented and even later than the first known recipe for pecan pie is documented, (after WWI).

Now I'm not saying I'd want to have had to deal with them but come on, at least get the facts right.

I like black eyed peas in almost any way they can be made.
I lived in Savanna, Ga. for a number of years and nobody seemed to know about the "cow peas" story.
At ACW reenactment I would often carry a ration bag of black eyed peas along with a bag of rice.
The peas cooked up pretty quick and then add the rice. We always called this "Hoppin John".
It was quick, hot and with a few wild onions added, salt and pepper, very tasty.
My best,
 Blair

Happy new year all!

Things are sort of settling down to (ab)normal here.  Grandmother left this morning, so the house is a little emptier (and by a little, I mean it.  She's only 4'10.  ;)  ).

We seemed to be in a constant loop of evil white stuff.  Get about four inches, have it melt over the next two-three days, and wake up with four more inches the next morning.  All the mountains are white.

Beyond that, the biggest bit of news is my close-to-acquisition of a new gun.  Ordered it last night, so it'll arrive Wednesday, so by the time the state gooberment gets done infringing on rights, I'll have a new Beretta M9(civilian version.  Not the 92.  This model has almost identical markings to the Gov. issued guns.) on the 20th.   ;D  I was surprised our dealer had any in stock.  After San Bernadino, it's pretty much impossible to find any CA-legal guns.  This distributor sold 17,000 AR Mags in one day!

Anyway, here's to a year of good shooting, good times, and God Blessing America.

Had a guy trying to tell me today it was the best thing in the world, I tossed my shock and awe one out (yes I've had more going, but his one is so cool) and told him to bring his gadget and we'd see how it compared to my new one as for time and convenience.

Then he mentioned the place to put the lids and I showed him one with some of my lid holders spread out ready and asked him if he thought it would work on Bertha, I think he pooped himself and decided I did know WTH I was talking about.   ;D

Evening y'all, and here's some night time caffeine for those so inclined.

All the white stuff is melting in the lower areas.  Creeks are flowing, people with AWD cars still think they can go 70 around wet corners, and the medical helicopters are flying over my house every hour or two.  So far, nobody I know.  Yet.

Russ T has a birthday?!  Hippo Birdy Two Ewes, Russ T.  Enjoy the discount for the first time; I got offered "the senior's discount" the first time when I was 43.  That sweet young thing must have thought my white beard meant I was a senior, sort of gave me a fright.  Tonight, I was shopping at Walgreen's, and the nice boy at the checkout just said "I gave you the senior discount, sir.".

What happened to that rack, Del?  I've ridden 7+ shakers that didn't do that much damage.

I still get the standard ‘Are old enough to buy this wine?’ even after letting my grey hair have its own way for the last several years.  Had to dye it one last time several years ago when the lady at the DMV told me I couldn’t put brown as my hair color anymore!  Heck I could even be a redhead at 65 if I wanted to!!!!!  ::) ::)

Didn’t get enough of the white stuff to warrant firing up the blower, just ended up sweeping the stuff off with a broom.

Had a dusting of snow this morn. 'Tis raining. "Light rain and snow in the evening. Light freezing rain also possible in the evening. Then light snow...Drizzle and freezing drizzle after midnight. Areas of dense fog reducing visibilities to less than 1/4 mile at times. Snow accumulation up to 1 inch. Nearly steady temperature in the lower 30s. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph. Good evening y'all.

Nothing really new in my neck of the woods.  Been going to work the past couple of days, though the productiveness is sort of questionable.  Yesterday, we sold two pairs of gloves, and a Ruger LCR.  Today, we sold a whole lot of nothing.  Though I succeeded in annoying one of "those" guys.  You know, the guy who comes in wanting 'a clip for my Glock fo-fie."
I'm not well versed in Glock nomenclature, so I asked if he wanted a magazine for a 45ACP Glock, or a G45.  After some back and forth, we determined that he wanted a magazine for a Glock 30, which is a 45.  So I went to order one, and our distributor was out of stock.  I told him that it could be a while before it got here, so he said nevermind, and wanted to order a gun that is not California legal.  I looked it up, and told him we can't do it, but that there is a California legal model.  He got irate, and actually rather rude.  He did leave, but it got tense...

Going to hit one of the local brew pubs for a fish fry tonight.

Severe case of COL (Cat on Lap).  Need to dislocate him as my legs are falling asleep.

Morning all,

Not much happening here.  Though I was saddled with fixing a Marlin 1894 at work, and it's turning into a job.  It only has a couple of parts, so I'll have to order all of them.  All said and told, I think the owner could find a used one in good condition for less.  (Who was the guy that decided a loading gate/spring need to cost $30?)
I told the guy this yesterday, and he told me "the Marlin '94 is the same rifle as the Winchester '94.  Just buy the parts off of an old Winchester and put them on."

No, just no.

Though I could be coming into a Ruger New Vaquero (45ACP convertible model) today.  I'll let y'all know!

TK,

You are correct... "No, Just no".

This sounds like a long term project of getting the proper period parts to fit that model Marlin 1894. They changed over the years and some of the newer made models maybe easier to get parts for than the older ones.
As a side note, the '94 Marin's and "94 Winchester's are not interchangeable.
My best,
 Blair

Dang wife, next time she's going to the store, a bit of snow and it's getting cold, needed a few things cause I'm gonna make omelets for supper, Russ's stores all over town, local chain, I love them, was just gonna go to the smaller original one close to home, but no, they don't have the shredded Asiago cheese she wants, so I have to go to the "West End of Lincoln Yuppie Russ's" instead of my nice ghetto one.   >:(

OK, pick-up is blocked in by black SUV/Cross Over/Station Wagon thing, so I drive it.   Yep, every dang yuppie in town is stocking up on free range organic brown eggs, artisan bread and soy milk.    ::)

OK, what a mess, find my items, have to tell the lady twice I don't want to try her stupid chicken spinach sausage she's handing samples out for, smells worse than a fast food place.     :P

Lines are long, almost every register open, yes dip, it's nice you brought your cloth bags, let the sacker sag for you, you are stupidly slow. ::)

Get out there, black is a popular color for them things like she drives and they almost look alike, found it, was gonna open the door, was locked, hmm, look in, wrong junk on the dash. ???   Finally fine the right black roo-dee-voo and get in, count 14 black thingys in the parking lot, as I'm leaving 2 more of the dang things are coming in.  Next time I either go to the ghetto store on a nasty Sat afternoon, she goes or she moves her roo-dee-voo so I can take the Field Marshall, never have trouble finding it and the Prius type cars stay out of my way. ;D

Afternoon y'all.

The doggone rain hit us.  Creek below my house is up about 4 feet above normal(officially in "flood" stage.).  Down the road a ways, the darn thing overwhelmed a culvert and ran across the highway.
Most other culverts are at their maximum, and the local VFD is running around everywhere with sand bags.  Ironically, the new road in they just put in town (the one that is supposed to survive if Noah comes back for an encore) is flooded for almost a mile, mud slides are almost closing one lane, and the dang thing is about to disconnect from the bridge.  Meanwhile, I'm baking cookies. ::)

In other news, I didn't get the Ruger.  Boss had to make an emergency trip to the City to make final arrangements for his trip to SHOT this week, so the store was closed.  Oh well.

Currently 11 with a WC of -7(BRRRRRR!)

We had to go out this afternoon and salt the roads, got kinda slick after we had some snow flurries. Put down 42 50lb. bags. While I was out doing that, Susie did the drive, but managed to slip and fall at the end of the drive before she was done. Same part of the drive that her sister ruined her right elbow on. So far Susie isn't complaining about being sore. She's in the tub soaking now, though ::) :-\

40 and drizzle here right now.  Supposed to make it to 46 with the drizzle quitting within the hour.  Between the warm temps and the rain most of the snow is gone down here in the valley, but the snow pack on the mountains is still about 110% of normal for this part of the year.  Even if this keeps up we will still need a couple three years to really break our drought.

Should be fairly dry by suppertime and I won’t get wet grilling the steaks.

Weather fine for woodcutting, but I've been interrupted by a frozen well house. There's a heater in there, but to much junk stored around the pressure tank caused cold spots. So far the pressure regulator is thawed, but there's still a pipe froze between the pump and pressure tank.

Buck, I know it took both cats a month before they would go back into the room that had their cat condo after we had it re-carpeted.  It only takes time until they rub on something enough to make it their own.  At least they don't resort to other means to mark things as theirs.

Looking out the den window at the bare Honey Locust tree and seeing ten or so mourning doves perched around its branches.  Good thing they ain’t buzzards!  Still looks weird!

Be doin' moderator work for an internet eagle cam this season. Historically she lays in early to mid February. The pair is still relatively young, healthy 'n strong, suspect they'll be on schedule. They've rebuilt the nest already. We'll get busy then thru the time the younguns leave in August.

Thanks for the coffee...I need it.
The jeep wouldn't start Saturday.  I messed with it thinking it was the battery, which was recently purchased (Summer 2015).  Not the battery or cables as far as I can tell.  Gotta get it towed to the local mechanic.  My poor wife had to drive me to work down one of the most dangerous farm to market roads in our area...something I do routinely.  Only four cars passed us...one of which was done safely.  I don't know what these folks are thinking.  We maintain the speed limit, and at the point where they turn off, or I turn...I'm usually about 10 seconds behind them....at least I can still see them.

Del,

It just goes "click"... It doesn't even turnover the starter.  When she starts, like she has been doing since paying for the tow truck bill, it is just like it is suppose to be....no drag at all.

Mechanic listed several things it could be...a bad spot on the starter was one of them.  A co-worker suggested cleaning up the grounds...one on frame and one on the engine...to see if that helps.  Right now, since I'm about 30 miles from my local mechanic, and 15 miles in the boondocks, I'm leaving well enough alone!  When I get home is the time to piddle with it.

Any leads are greatly appreciated!  She is almost paid for, and in really good shape...when she starts...
Title: Re: January 2016 Coffee is up

OK whne you went "click" you should have looked at the volt meter and seen if it went down to ) or turned on the dome light and seen if it went clear out, if so, it would mean you were not getting enough voltage.

If not, then it likely would be a bad starter or the relay.

Clean the ground cables, esp the other end where it grounds from the battery and where there is one from the engine to the frame, clean that and the connections on the starter.

If it does it again grab your hammer you carry and crawl under it and beat on the case of the starter and see if that helps.

It is good to beat the starter when someone is holding the ignition switch on start. That is what we had to do to get the suburban to start before the starter was replaced last week.

If it was the Neutral safety switch, it most likely wouldn't click. You don't have to really beat the starter, just tap it with the hammer. I've had several starters that got that bad. Easiest one to deal with was the Taurus, starter was only about a foot behind the front bumper.

No click with the safety switch is right, why I was trying to find out what it does.  Have a similar problem with The Field Marshall and before on The General,  turn the key, nothing happens, I'm in neutral left foot on the brake, right on the gas with my heel, trying to toe the starter as I turn the key. ::)   Old ingrained habits die hard, learned to drive on a 53 Dodge 1/2 ton when about 12.  LOL    After 10 years of one with a safety switch in the clutch I am doing it less and less.    ;D

And no, a good tap will often work but a good whack makes you feel better.   :P

I learned the same dance, but with a '54 Chevy. Then when I went to the Army, had to learn a new one, push the clutch with your left heel, so your left toe can reach the starter button on an M151 Jeep.

Thank you good folks for the tips!  She is still running fine.  I have tomorrow off, and I plan to clean the ground connections.
BTW, yes, she is an automatic...2009 Wrangler.

I had a manual the first 4 or so years that I lived in Houston.  The last 30 to 40 minutes of my commute was stop and go traffic on a freeway.  It was a good workout for the left leg...but made me lopsided!

Had to go out early and spread salt. We got a bit more than they predicted, plus there was some ice under it. The truck had to go for servicing as well. while there,  they found the tranny cooling lines were leaking, so it was down for the rest of the day. We used our personal vehicles to finish the day out. ::)

Currently 29, broken clouds ::)

57 degrees here this morning. Cooler next week, but no snow in the forecast. All the weather seems to be passing by north and west of here. Don't know if it's El Nino or global warming or what, but I'm not complaining!

We got two storms coming in, small one will be here tonight, larger one tomorrow night.   Talked to Miz Lettie on FB a bit ago out to Reno, she's snowed into work and they are running out of things to do cause the trucks can't get through. ::)

When they run out no more OT.
