You are going primitive camping with your family (or even by yourself).  You, of course, want protection.  You choose two guns handloaded with black powder ammo.  .Which would they be?

For me:  a 4 3/4 Ruger New Vaquero in .45 colt and a Uberti  1873 carbine in .44-40 would be suitable.

Ah well, were it I, It'd be a Uberti 3 1/2 in Sheriff with the full length Ejector in 45 Colt.  The rifle would be either a Uberti 1873 Trapper or 1866 Trapper, in 45 Colt.

Colt SAA chambered in 45 Colt and Winchester 1876 rifle chambered in 45-75wcf.

A 73 in 44wcf is a bit more handy but if I need to kill something for my protection or food there is no such thing as too much or too dead.

Same as Cliff , all my border trips are basically going into the badlands 30+mi. into the desert and 3 mi. from Old Mexico , you sleep with your guns down there . My constant companion is  a .45 Colt SAA with at least 100 rounds in my pack and a 76 in 45/75 ,  100 rounds min. The West is still wild down there .,,,DT

Think I might foller Cliff and Dusty - I dont own a decent cartridge pistol but I had a colt (clone) in 44/40 but a 45 would be a better choice and the first two cylinders would be carrying a number ten shot load - you said primitive ! Lotsa snakes in our backcountry and I do not like em at all! The rifle ? yes to the 1876 despite the extra weight - anything hit with that is gonna stay hit.

My choice would be a Shot Gun, with a selection of bird shot, buck shot and slugs.
A revolver in .45 Colt.

Most definitely my SAA .45 Colt revolver.  If I understand the question being what is currently in my gun vault it'd have to be my Winchester 1894 in .32 Winchester Special.  Otherwise give me an 1886 in .45-70.  (Just 'cuz I've always wanted one. ;D)

Seems 45 Colt SAA is far and way the leader...and I would agree,  mine is a Uberti Stainless ...
and my Krag.

OK saw the header DoH !  " two BLACK POWDER guns "   yeah I know  30/40 Krag is smokeless....

but its what I'd take....

EDIT.... staying within the question parameters then and revisiting the thread 4 months later ...

I'd still have the 45 Colt and my 44/40 rifle ( that's using whats in my safe )

when planets align...do the deal !

Okay....I'll bite.
Sidearm is a no-brainer and given for me...SAA (copy) in 45 Colt.  I like my '73 rifle in 44-40, but I think that I'd prefer my Trapdoor carbine.  It may be slow to shoot, but it is light and I have a lot of confidence with it and in it.  It is deadly and accurate.

I'd bring along my Cimarron 7th Cav. in .45 Colt and my Uberti 1873 sporting rifle in .44-40. both are reliable weapons firing rounds that have been proven to be reliable in regards to both hunting and self-defense. My second place choice in regards to the long gun is my MK. III Snider carbine. Anything hit by that is staying down.

If I have the choice of any 'Old West' gun and not just what I have, I'd probably stick with the SAA .45 with the cavalry length barrel, but I'd pick a shorter, lighter version of the '73. Either a 19" carbine or a trapper's carbine with that nice & short 16" barrel.

Well, probably my 8" and 5" 1860 colt and the removable shoulder stock.   I can wear them in a fancy 2 gun rig, me being a guy full of juice and I can keep the shoulder stock handy.   I am as good with it at 75 yards as I am my Henry.

out here in Montana...for man or beast, it would be my .45 Ruger bisley with compressed swiss and my Uberti '76 in 50-95 with 1f. then carried by my trusty stead.

Old model Ruger Bisley in 45 Colt. Accompanied by Marlin lever action also in 45 Colt. 250 grain slugs with a full case of 777. Hypothetically speaking I would feel very comfortable with that. Practically speaking I feel very comfortable with that when I camp although I'm not carrying around black powder loads.

It would have to be my Marlin LTD III, 18.5" Octagon 45/70 with 62 grains of 2F behind a 405 grain Flat Nose bullet.  Side arm '73 Colt's in 38 W.C.F. with 3F behind 180 Big Lube Boolit.

A Winchester 1892 in .44/40 and a Winchester 1886 in .45-70.

Marston: Are you familiar with the army revolver, Mr. Quigley?
Quigley: Well, sir, I never had much use for one.
