« on: October 18, 2020, 03:03:06 PM »
Just got a Cimarron Thunderball off gunbroker in 357.
Could anybody tell me what the cylinder throats usually measure on a Pietta 357? Would like to get som rounds loaded before it gets here. Probly won’t see it till next weekend.
Thanks a lot

.358+

As our freid freind  good bud  Coffin posts -
but that is "nominal dims"

If you are concerned about actual dimensions, you will probably want to number & slug each chamber mouth.

Then one will probably want to keep a load log including powder, lot #, charge, lead hardness, sized bullet diameters,
day, date, time, temperature, relative humidty, barometric pressure, wind direction and veloicty, altitude, gps location,
sighting methods, standing, sitting, prone, eyeglass prescription, and where one placed ones tongue (left corner of mouth, etc)
Oh, and whether one made a chicken offering to the powder gods.

I myself have had very good luck just using "as cast" soft lead or "wheel weight" lead out of my one RCBS 158 gr swc
and my many Lee .357 molds.

good luck & keep us posted.

ps (in case you could not tell, the above a a jokoe son! a joke! ... Foghorn Leghorn, Warner Bros, ca 1963)

pps - oh, and Pictures Please!  love to see the Thunderthing and your chosen bullets!

Thanks a lot guys!
Leanin heavy toward the Lee 358-125 RF. Planning on using 25-1 lead with BP. Until they get the mold in at my dealer, I’m going to have to use some 358- 158 grain gas check from an old RCBS mold, as its the only mold I have. Just have to make sure they drop at least 358.

I picked up the 125 gr Lee RNFP, but have not yet cast any. Please let us know your results.
If you plan to run with BP, make sure to clean off any smokeless lube as it can get nasty.
SPG always works well for either.

 :D  Actually   :o

PLUS ONE to Pervesser Marvelous!!  His dissertation actually be some Spot On.  Except:

the good perfesser left out one important consideration.  "How you Hold yer Tongue" when pulling the press handle.  Very important that.

And . . . . Yes, my quite short answer was for a "Nominal" dimension.  That also presumes a "standard deviation."  Your particular gun may or may not meet that criteria.

Barrel dimension drives Throat dimension.  First one Sluggs the bore.  then one selects a projectile approximately .001 or .002 over groove diameter.  Again, "Nominal" bore will be .357.  A good bullet fit is the common commercial size of .358.

A simple test.  Drop a cast bullet known to to be 358 down the chamber.  It should stop at the throat.  Then a light tap with a pencil should pop it through the throat.  If you have to "drive" it through the throat, the throat is too tight and needs reamed.

Hide and Watch.

PS:  DON'T FERGET TO HOLD YER TONGUE RIGHT!!
