Cimarron Turnbull finish

Is it worth it to order these from Cimarron this way or send it to him directly to also carbonia blue the other steel parts and nitre blue the screws and base pin?

When I talked with the Cimarron folks at the Jan 2012 SHOT Show, they said they were no longer using Turnbull for the bone charcoal case hardening. The work was being done by another company.

I've been told that this outfit does their US Finish.

I believe Classic is who they told me was doing their work now. I sent an all blue USFA Cowboy to them and had them case harden the frame and hammer. They did a nice job and it was considerably less than Turnbull would have charged.

I noticed that when I went to their website as I was going to try to locate a used Rodeo, polish the metal, then send the frame and hammer to them for case colors, then nitre blue the screws, the trigger, base pin and ejector rod.  The trigger guard, barrel, ejector rod housing and back strap I would then do in rust blue.  I know rust blue is not historically correct, but then again neither is hot salt tank modern bluing. Carbonia blue is close to the charcoal blue they are offering, but I would rather not spend the money on it. Rust bluing looks very good the way I do it.  I can do everything myself except the case coloring and I can keep the savings for ammo components.

I have known these guys at Classic Guns for several years.... They do unbelievable work! They have worked some magic for me in the past and I consider them to be the best case hardening folks I have seen... Their ability to soak and refinish a piece of dented and old wood is pure voodoo. I have been trying to get their secret for years :-)

Turnbull offers an attractive refinish price for Rugers.  That’s about $350.  I think you can expect to pay them more than that for an Italian clone or a Colt.   

Broader point I think is that you’ll save yourself money and hassle by buying Cimarron’s $750 gun with the premium finish.  Cimarron does a few at a time I’m sure, gets a wholesale price.  Or does their own disassembly / assembly to keep their price down.

Since I do some gunsmithing on the side I can tell you the assembly and disassembly charge does make some difference in price, but on  a big run it could be substaintial.
