Buffalo Arms states that the crimp groove is .460 back from the nose, 2.25"- .460" = 1.79", I doubt .002" will make much difference either way. Do you have the mold or any bullets to verify the distance to the crimp groove? If not I have an old version of the mold and some cast that I can check for you. I don't have a 45-60 but have used this bullet in 45-70 and it shoots great in 1886 Winchesters. HP bullets are a bit more time consuming to cast if you haven't already purchased the mold something like the Accurate 46-305C was designed for the 45-60. You can also get the in a multi cavity mold and have a little faster production time.      http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=46-305C

hp ,, thanks for reply ,, I have a older Lyman 457122HP ,it measures OAL @ .905 , the grove is @ .420 from base, leaves a grove to tip of nose @ .485, it cast @ .458-.459 w/ my mix I get .343gns. + .3-5gns. ( call it .350gns. ). 2.70 - 2.80 will feed w/o any problems , the question really has to do with , shorter case length & pressure . Yes I can use less powder ( smokeless ), was wondering if anyone may have tried the shorter brass & chrono'd their results.
I do like the looks of the Accurate # 46-305c , thanks for the tip ( just now i'm out of alum cans , loading money ). I'v been rebuilding this o'l ( Chappie x 26" call'r " PATCH'S " ) rifle and now it's time to get it accurate ,, diff powders & case OAL.

I in town today and one of my favorite places had a 45-60 Winchester 76. Was in pretty good condition considering the age.

Slamfire,

If you are just out looking for a mould to use/buy for your '45/60', then, why don't you just buy the original correctly designed one for it, the Lyman 457191?  I bought this one for my rifle until I found an original Winchester of Ebay.

Look at this link and scroll down to the bullet #456191, reading the related text.  http://ps-2.kev009.com/ohland/Cast_Bullet/Ideal-Lyman_Molds/Ideal-Lyman_Mold_Descriptions.html#456_457_45_Calibre

Then go to this link, scroll down to the Lyman Moulds for Rifles and see that the 45 mould called 457191.  It is the same design.  http://www.castpics.net/subsite/CurMolds/Lyman.pdf

Hey BRS, been trying to find the 457191 for a while ,, but, I won't pay gouger prices!!!
See original text ,, has anyone shortened their brass to 1.81 & tried it like Brian Pearce , suggested ??
Most places i'v ck'd. for a new mould , have " out of stock " not taking BO'S. But one will show up ,,, directly. Thanks for the texts.

I  understand now.  Sorry I cannot help you with numbers for that mould #.  Don't own one.

Good luck.
