Well, We're that much closer to the evil white stuff falling and the end of the CAS season in the Northeast.

At the U-SEE-UM no damage, power was restored yesterday evening.

Just had my first visitor, an old Vietnam vet wanting cruse memory lane.
I don't expect a lot of flow today though.

When I was about 7 years old, my Dad taught me to shoot his Harrington & Richardson Sportsman Mod. 999 22 cal..
His gun was made in the late 30s, I don't know if he bought it new, but I doubt it.
It looked like the one below without the vented ridge, though some warn in finish, it shot very well.
By the early 1960's Dads gun had moved on.
In 1971 when I was 23, I saw a new model 999 at a Kmart (remember? they sold guns pre-Rosie O'Donald  ::))
I decided to get it for my Dad for Christmas. It came back to me when Dad passed in 1986.

Today it fits a Holster made by Old West Reproductions (actually made for a Schofield)
It brings back fond memories, of the original gun  :) and has its own sentimental history as well.

Morning all.

50s and sunny in Missoula this morning.  Shaping up to be quite a nice day.

On the docket for today, the Mrs wants to go to the Fort Missoula Museum today, and then we get to go feed horses. I’m still not sure how this turned into a “we” job, but alas, here I am. I had hoped to go burn some 357magnum today, but it doesn’t look like I’ll have time.

In other news, on Thursday there was a large police issue a couple blocks from my house at the county courthouse. Turns out one of the local ne’er-do-wells had been angered by an argument and was chasing a person with a machete. A passerby went full Earp on him, buffaloing him with the barrel of his Ruger 44 mag and then holding him at gun point. Does that count as cowboy action non-shooting? ::)

I just finished a read by Bernard O. DeVore ( TSGT. Bernie DeVore Flight Engineer)
"From Farm to Flight to Faith" ISBN 978-0-9746626-3-3
I had the honor to meet Mr. DeVore as he often attended our special veteran programs at the museum.
The story was of his survival in the sky during WWII.
Bernie flew 17 missions from June 1944-Jan 1945 in the B17 Flying Fortress "Picadilly Special"
92nd Bomb Group, 325th Squadron, 8th Air Force.
He wrote " he received the Holy Spirit in his heart at 32,000 feet and over 32 degrees below zero."
He was the last surviving member of his crew, and sadly Mr. DeVore passed this last June at 99 years.
He joins HIS CREW and so many of the GREATEST Generation, the gallant men & women who served in WWII.

God Bless you

Those old birds were a different breed. I knew an old fellow (he died in 2007, I think) who was a pilot in the B-25 and B-17, and was part of the “100 Hump Club” for surviving 100bombing runs on Japan, taking off from India, flying over the Himalayas(the hump), hitting the main islands, and landing back in Liberated parts of China. This is unpressurized aircraft, with open bomb bay doors. I think I’ll pass on that experience.

In other news, I was productive today. Dropped off my truck at the transmission shop at 7:45 (turns out the whole problem was one of the secondary cooler return lines had a leak that was preventing the torque converter from working right. Darn those. Automatic transmissions). Discovered that somebody had tried to steal my catalytic converter, but was foiled by the mounting bracket bolts being rusted and seized. The one time rust helped a body.

Had my DOT physical for my CDL this afternoon,  then visited two separate farm and ranch stores looking for horse supplements and trailer roof sealer. In the process I stumbled into the shooting aisle and got the one and only bottle of Accurate #5, and now I have to figure out what to do with it. I guess load some 38+p or something. Such an affliction.  ::)

Relaxing, had a nice visit with Sedalia Dave, watching the Cardinals game. Pujols just hit 703 and passed Babe Ruth for most RBIs. Plan for tomorrow is to work on the new guncart and possibly run some 45 ammo [if I get off my duff and load the primer tubes for the 550 tonight]. Supposed to be absolutely gorgeous tomorrow, 79F , sunny and low humidity with light breezes. Y'all be good and be safe.

Hope someone was playing Marty Robbins in the background.  ::)

She’s a chilly one this morning. 39 degrees. I am currently perched on a curb outside the transmission shop, eagerly awaiting doors opening to pick up my truck. They’re walking away with $800 of my dollars for 4 hours of work, but I don’t feel so bad lining a local business’s pockets as I would one of the big chains.

Made it home, some pics later, well what was to be 20 was actually 31, not big deal, had enough and been many a time that has happened, but 2-3 more would have run out.  Great bunch of kids and parents. They want to do it again in the spring and maybe do a different menu.  A simple meal actually, beef stew, chicken and noodle and do to the lack of good help Matt bought frozen noodles, was supposed to have a noodle maker come up but turns out someone else had the week off.  I made the biscuits and the crust for the biscuit crust cobbler and checked oven temp a few time and bossed on the coals and when to move.  I've developed what may be a new method for cooking delicate items, I have about got it perfected, sure keeps the bottoms unburnt.

Matt had to drive about 75 miles each way extra to haul my butt.

I read in the News this morning, 5 looters were arrested ( 4 men and a girl ).
Two of the men were UN-documented Colombian nationals, that had been in the news a few weeks back having received flights
to Martha's Vineyard.
So they filtered back, and loot the storm devastated Ft. Myers, imagine that  ::)

The Sheriff in Lee county has now said " no tolerance, looters will be hunted, caught and jailed, if they are lucky!
They will shoot looters !

Currently 45, headed to the low 70s if we’re lucky.

Picked up the old ford yesterday. She’s shifting good, but running a little rough. Needs a tune up. Might start trying to work on that today. Also have some 38 brass laying around that might need some powder and lead tossed into it. We’ll see how things go.

Yes I'm having fun, yes I am glad I talked them into doing it on the 18th instead of yesterday.  When the surgeon asked why I wanted to I showed him a picture of me with Cub Scouts and told him another group of kids was expecting me.  He said one of the best reasons he ever heard, and waiting is not dangerous just an extra 2 weeks to hurt, so used to it that it don't matter.

Afternoon all.

75 and sunny today.

Spent the morning doing little projects around the house and applying to a Forest Service job. Currently sitting at the tire shop waiting for my truck to finish getting new rubber. Then off to the barn to feed the equestrians. I loaded up a few rounds of 38 and 357 with Acc #5 as well. I had hoped to try and burn some powder tomorrow, but it’s not looking promising.

Morning all.

Low 40s today, the start of early rifle season. I’m not out chasing meat because, well, I don’t have the appropriate tag. Early rifle season is a youth hunt, and I guess they stop considering you a youth at 16 here. My wife ma disagree with that statement in my case.  ::)

Plans for today include a trip to Fort Missoula and equestrian activities. I got talked into doing some handyman work around the place, so I’ll be hanging some polycarbonate panels over an open window in the barn so that one of the mares stops sticking her head in and stealing the lid to the salt bucket. I’m not sure why she likes doing that, but she finds it quite amusing. I also get to fix the arena fence, which involves replacing a half dozen posts, rehanging rails and painting the whole she-bang. That one will keep me busy a while.

Johnny, glad to hear you and the missus are doing better. Keep up the healing.

TK & Major 2, many thanks for kind words.

My wife is a strong lady. In July of 2021, she had a very serious operation and ended up flat on her back for 21 days. She came home with a feeding tube and could only walk ten steps. Her will and attitude were strong and each day she would improve slightly. Within three months, she was able to shake the tube and return to the pool to do water aerobics. She never once complained about getting the Covid.

We are two very lucky and fortunate people.

Evening all.

Looks like we’re starting off the last week of warmth nicely. High was 76, and hardly a cloud in the sky.

Had a rather productive day. Saddle soaped a bunch of the Mrs’ horse tack, refinished the grips on my Heritage 22 (I’ll try to figure out pictures later), took the dog for a walk, and now have a pork loin on the oven.

We encountered a small grizzly bear while out. It was a young bear, about 6 feet long, and maybe 250 pounds. He was enjoying the sunshine in a grassy clearing about 75 yards away, and we maintained that distance. Made my 357 feel a little less than adequate.

No photography of Señor Yogi, as I left my phone in the truck. And I like my RR. A little tack driver with subsonic ammo. It shoots a little to the left with the magnums, but some Kentucky Windage fixes that. I’ve killed a chipmunk at about 30 steps with it (the rodent went to good use as a dog lunch before I could get to it. Still working on that retrieve  ::) ). I was thinking about trying an NRA 22 shoot with it this winter if I have the time.

They be saying us old folks may get a raise again next year, as much as 10%, bad new they likely are not going to raise the threshold as to when said folks have to pay income tax.  So some and I am sure we are in that group, and could be one that gets the shaft.

TK, you did a great job on refinishing your Heritage grips. That's a big improvement over the stock finish. In 2005 I bought my first Cowboy gun. It was an 1851 Navy Colt Percussion Revolver. Black powder was not allowed at our local indoor range, so I bought a Heritage .22 Revolver. It has served me well. Shortly thereafter, I discovered CAS City and got into Cowboy Action Shooting. Recently I had to retire from shooting CAS matches due to Arthritis in my shooting hand. I've been training myself to shoot left-handed with my .22 Revolver and my Henry .22 lever action rifle. At least I'm still able to go to our local range and shoot at some Cowboy style paper targets.

Done for the day with all the required task, brand ne bag of antibiotics, new batteries in the pump, got a blood draw, totally painless cause they use that line hanging out my arm, one yesterday at the GP was ok, first try and not a lot of pain, the nurse there is not qualified to remove the pump. ::)  Even got the rest of last nights dishes done, left over CFS samwhich on Kaiser buns for supper.

Blood and pee test at GP must have came out good, so looks like a green light for getting this back fixed Tuesday.  They say if all goes well and no surprises it should actually feel better than it has in over 40 years, and should be home by lunch time.  ::)  Been dreading it, just remember people with holes big enough to put a baseball through on both sides, body cast for several weeks and being not good for much for much for 6 months or so.  By Thanksgiving I should be only limited by the heart and I just have to stop and sit a couple minutes and can do stuff again.

Have had some people ask what it would take to get me here or there to teach ovens and I have said we'll see what spring brings and if they can figure out how to get me there and back and a place to sleep probably less than they think because if people want to learn there should be enough gear there also.  Been talking about if I can get a better vehicle I might be able to meet Norton and his wagon places.  I have several friends I wish were my age and retired.  We could really make a splash for a few years.  Having a friend with a wagon is better than owning one. ;D

Trip to the Doc today for another Cold Laser Treatment on my legs to fight neuropathy in my feet. They have helped quite a bit. The Missus and I went to lunch at Zaxby's, then took her to a couple of places with sales. Easy afternoon, mild temps, mid 70s. Slim hope the Doc was able to get you some relief. Del, glad to hear the good report.

Just realized it's been quite a while since i posted anything! Been reading, just not writing. Alive and somewhat well here, was cleaning up some thorny locust infestation last weekend, cut sown several trees 15+ ft tall, cutting them up smaller to pile up to burn later. Well, one big limb must have been under some tension, I was cutting limbs and one of them whipped around and hit the back of my left hand. Hurt some, but i kept working, but later-WOW the throbbing and swelling started. X ray monday, not broken, but hand still not functional today. Oh, well, I've got probably 6 months or more of sick days saved up. Getting stir crazy though. Managed to mount the brush hog on the tractor and use it this afternoon, probably took 30-45 minutes to get it hooked up "single handedly".

anyway enough about that! TK, glad to hear you're back, Slim and Decon, careful of those backs. Del, glad to hear you're getting some of those health problems straightened out! Praying your surgery is successful!

Evening all.

Today was a balmy 71 with scattered clouds. Took the opportunity to go to the last farmers market of the season. Was somewhat disappointed, as most of the folks there were either selling CBD products, kombucha (still don’t know what that is), or processed food trucks. Costco had a booth selling Kirkland branded sausages and dusty produce. The only two vendors of interest were a beekeeper selling honey and a local butcher selling locally grown/butchered pork and beef. We walked away having doubled our money by folding it and returning it to the pocket. The walk along the river to/from the truck was nice at least   ::)

Easy day here today. Took the Missus into town to look for a blouse for her for tomorrow's Old Fashioned Day at Church. She found one at the Consignment Shop and I found a corncob pipe [it'll look good with my Classic Cowboy rig]. Hit 84 and sunny, then a nice big thunderstorm this afternoon with hail. Got the whole shebang. Possible rain tomorrow. Lifting my cup at all of you.

Perusing here I noted no one was about yesterday, at least with anything to chat about.

I pretty much took a nap.
Saturday at the Corn Maze had worn me out.
I don't know the numbers attending as brief, but hard rain scattered the crowd. (Guesstimate 2000, Sunday about 3000)
I had to pull everything and place it under cover (except the lifeboat) then re-set twice because to the brief showers.

Because of Ian, the annual first weekend (1st. weekend in Oct.) was canceled, so this was opening weekend.

I was at the last shoot of the season here in upstate NY. I was shooting great the first 4 stages, then on the last stage I had the train wreck of all train wrecks. I mean if ugly was a brick this was the great wall of china. Started with rifle, had to shoot 5 progressively smaller tombstone targets then dump any remaining rounds into a target to the side. I ran the 5 and swung to the dump and proceeded to shoot the shotgun target 3 times then jack a round out.I reloaded and shot the correct target,But I ended up with 3 misses and a "P" plus the time it to to reload I ended up with a 74 second run..The previous stages were between 28 to 32 seconds. Oh well, I went out big. Was still fun!

If anyone has sciatic nerve problems I highly recommend this new scope surgery, I give it 4 1/2 stars, I had to get a pain pill in the night because actually my arthritic left hip was hurting, have already cut down on the pain pills, the one button hole size incision still feels like a to short of a shirt and suspenders sun burn.  Have a pillow behind me on the chair, am planning on doing dishes after the coffee is done. Still finishing my orange/clementine Body Armor lyte aka no sugar.  Amazon delivers 2 cases a month because we both pretty much both only like it and the hardest to find in the store.  We buy it in the store when they have it cheaper.  Tastes good, almost like Sunny D which is junk.    We both have that somewhat common problem of vitamin tablets make us sick to our stomachs and the free range organic not only make me feel sick to my stomach my stomach acts on it.  Kind of a Yuppie Gym Rat stuff but it has what I need and it tastes very good cold.  Niece and her husband turned us on to it.

Was funny the nurse was commenting while they prepped me I had had a lot of surgeries, told her by my count this was #18, asked her if at #25 I get a free one, she was good, asked me if I had my punch card with me.

Greetings all.

Cloudy and 68 today in the bitterroot valley. I’m doing a portapotty route today, which takes me to Idaho. At the moment I’m waiting for one of the big boy trucks to come empty my truck out so I can finish up. They gave me the smallest truck to do the most toilets, and I don’t really know how they decided on that one.

After work I get the joy of driving to great falls for the weekend, giving me a total front seat time of 14 hours and 500 miles for the day. That will be fun.

Arrived in Great Falls. Was a pleasant drive.

My drive to Idaho was…eventful. Ended up blowing a tire out in the middle of nowhere, out in the Locsha wilderness. It was one of the duals, so I was able to limp it back over the pass and to the tire shop in Missoula, but it wasn’t a fun experience.

I know by afternoon my incision will get sore just because of where it is, sleep on my side so it gets rest from being rubbed on.  I can't believe it, the bad hip is a little sore but no more than usual and that is tolerable.  But for the first time in over 40 years my back is pain free.

Some concern's last night around midnight, Blaze was alerting which also set Zada off to barking.
Figured I'd better get up and see what all the barking was about, 5 fire dept. trucks!
A neighboring pasture about 300 yds away was ablaze.
It was moonless night, so it looked to a big area, with a bright orange glow.
But they contained it fairly quickly, not sure yet what the extent or how it started.
It has not been particularly dry, what with Ian (we were not that wet or flooded after the storm)
I assume, a trash/brush fire, started by the property owner earlier and not put or allowed to burn out properly.
The FD was efficient and had left inside the hour.
To my knowledge, there is no current burn ban so I suppose there will be no further concern for the owner  :-\

I'm at the museum today, working on Naval Arm Guard and a WW2 Shore Patrol display.

The Great Falls are still there. It’s cold and “the white stuff” is falling.

We spent the last three days working on a plane, doing a very simple job but the instructions have a lot of “wait 2-6 hours before continuing” built in. So 25 minutes of actual work takes 3 days. I guess it kept us out of trouble.

I also got an award from my time overseas. The “Air and Space Meritorious Service Medal,” for reasons I don’t fully understand. But I’m not going to argue with the Colonel about it either.  ::)

I’d never though to try it hot. That may make it more palatable.

I’m safely back in Missoula now. The pass coming over was a mess. Ice patches and 70mph+ winds howling through the canyon. Lots of cars off in the ditch, guardrail etc. I tucked myself in behind the plow/salt truck and plodded along at a comfortable 30mph over the top without incident.

Still doing the antibiotics for at least 2 weeks or after a clean blood test =2 weeks.  Security lady at the desk and the receptionist and nurse in the infectious disease office said that too.

Well the information says to do self promotion so if you know anyone who needs information I'm in business selling down-loads with pictures.    And no, just ask and I will send to my friends, actually aiming for the yuppie free range organic homesteaders "living off the grid"  ::) or at least wishing the could.  ???  I will say no more for now but 40 years ago we called them acreage people. ;D    https://www.etsy.com/shop/Glensdutchovendocs?ref=seller-platform-mcnav

Morning all.

40s and couldn’t in the Missoula valley today.

The big news here today is that Mrs. TK has landed an interview at a world-class horse training and breeding facility in South Carolina. So we’ll be heading out for a week in November for that. Chances are that she’s going to get the job, so I guess I’ll be heading east.

Afternoon folks, a really pretty day here. The rest of the week is supposed to be real nice weatherwise. Getting the stuff together as I am heading up getting the Church Auditorium carpet cleaned Sunday after our Afternoon Service. Thank God for young guys with good backs! I think I am in trouble as the guy doing the announcement about this said I was buying pizza for everyone. Uh oh...

So, like the Miracle of Manna you're being asked to perform the Miracle of the Pizza.
