OK, we may have to go by the book this year.   ;D

Nothing is more certain to secure endurance and capability of long-continued effort than the avoidance of everything as a drink except cold water (and coffee at breakfast). Drink as little as possible of even cold water. Experience teaches old soldiers that, the less they drink on a march the better, and that they suffer less in the end by controlling the desire to drink, however urgent.

PREPARED UNDER THE DIRECTION
OF THE
COMMISSARY GENERAL OF SUBSISTENCE.

PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY OF THE SECRETARY OF WAR
FOR USE IN THE
ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES.

GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE.
1896.

I think I'll go by a different book - one that says drink lots of water to maintain hydration.

I'll bet that same manual prescribes treating frostbite by rubbing briskly with snow. ::)

Well that too, I was thinking after supper when I read that.

It clearly says " long-continued effort" and "on a march" which leads me to think after supper would be the time to make up for all that abstinence during the day's march  ;)

This might make an interesting dessert for supper.  May want to move camp a bit more south west. ;D

STEWED PRUNES.

Wash and pick over the prunes, rejecting imperfect ones; put them to soak over night in the water (cold) they are to be cooked in, using only enough water to cover them. Put the prunes on the fire where they can just simmer during three hours (prunes require longer cooking than other dried fruits because of their thick skin). Do not let them boil, nor use a vessel of iron. Keep them closely covered. If carefully cooked they present a plump appearance and are not broken or burst (this defect gives them a slovenly look, the reverse of appetizing). As the prune contains much sugar, more should not be added; the fruit taste is more prominent without additional sugar. If, however, in-creased sweetness is desired, the sugar should not be added till about five minutes before taking off the fire.

But this is also the same Army that considered fresh bread as unsuitable for the troops, so they set it out for a day before using. Considered more healthy that way?? But I also understand that officers got fresh, I guess they could handle the "unhealthy" fresh bread.

Back to water, in French Foreign Legion, when on the march, they were supposed to wear the canteen with the belt gear over the canteen straps, so they couldn't easily drink between rest breaks. May have had more to do with conserving water in the desert than anything else, though.

When we put out the match flyer with the information on motels, I forgot the new convention center in Broken Bow (about 30 miles)

As of this minute Bro. Rope and I are planning to attend. Considering the location of the Muster as to it's  remoteness and those who have already confirmed their attendance, I feel that the presence of the Senior Chaplain is a must to keep things in a relative state of sobriety. Remember also that the consumption of spirits without offering a wee nip to the two head Scotsmen will be quite seriously frowned upon.

This was originally concocted as a gun cleaner, but some Irishman in desperate need re-purposed it.

Given the number of early registrants you may have your work cut out for you.

Pitspitr, I'm going to plan on attending. Have some questions tho. Scouts can only shoot pistol caliber lever guns? Guess that leaves out my 76. :(

Scout refers to the shooting category not the persona. As Dalton said if you want to shoot your '76 you will shoot in the militia class.

I will dress as a officer of the staff, but will shoot in the Marksman class, not the Staff officer class.

Really glad to hear you're planning to join us!

Howdy Pitspitr. Is there a black powder scout class or are they all lumped together?

Scout class? Considering the picture I got today I would have thought you would be thinking Rifleman.

I have to double check but I think we can offer both BP and Smokeless as long are enough entries in both.

ANY class may be split BP/Smokeless should numbers warrent.   Marksman and Rifleman WILL be split.  If we have two or more shooters in any class loaded with BP, then there will be a BP subclass.
Civilize them with a Krag . . .
