Title: 2014 10th Anniversary edition International Grand Muster
Post by: Pitspitr on July 16, 2013, 06:10:43 AM
Hopefully this is early enough that everybody can put in for time off now and get it.

I will be hosting the 2014 Department of Missouri Muster International Grand Muster, June 27th, 28th & 29th, in my pasture. The date this coming year is a little earlier than we normally hold the Department Muster in hopes of a little cooler weather. The average high temperature in this area on June 27th is 84 degrees

This Muster will be open to anyone in the GAF. If not currently a member I can help you register. (Membership in the GAF is free and easy) By using Google Earth and going to  41°40'16.24"N Latitude and  99°19'42.54"W Longitude you can see the Dept. Muster site. Registration forms will be available on the dispatches page of the Grand Army's Web site. Particpation will be limited to 35 shooters. Registration is $75,  an extra Sat. eve. banquet ticked is $15. Meals will be available on site from Delmonico. Those wishing to attend but not compete may do so without registration fee, but be sure to pay the meal fee if you plan to eat with us.

The planned activities include: a 3 stage GAF steel target main match, a 300 yd paper target long range match and a GAF Expansion Era Match. While 3 stages for the main match doesn't sound like much these three stages will be of the skirmish format and will feature about 20 knock down targets per stage. Round counts will be dependent on the number of times the shooter needs to shoot at each target to get it to fall. 100 rounds at least would be a good plan. One stage will feature a Gatling gun.(ammunition provided) This is a match that, as one participant said, truly needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

This muster will be a primative camping event. I will have a tent city and have tentage for about 10 individuals if you don't have your own. We should be easily able to get photos without anything modern in them. We should have plenty of time to sit around the campfire and visit.

Shooters will be able to sight in their rifles on Friday evening. When the actual long range match is held on Saturday it will be shot from the shooters choice of positions from the ground. The idea behind this is that it will be more of a real world type of match.

I've attached a FAQ sheet and a suggested equipment list below.

FYI gentlemen (and Delmonico) he calls it a pasture, but there is a permanent "fort"/shooting platform at the campsite, along with a shower and stock tank, with piped in running water.  A log faced outhouse is also installed.  Each Skirmish run takes place in its own ravine, with enough targets and props for each scenario allready installed.   Transport, either a Utility vehicle or a pickup, is readily available for those not wishing to drive the path out to the shooting area.  (My car stays at the farmhouse.)  The camp area is high in the Nebraska sandhills, with a spectacular view, often including thunderstorms far off over South Dakota.

Not too mention the education my son has recieved via the campfire stories of various Squids, Jarheads, Grunts and Wingwipers.  (the Nebraska Highway Patrol chimes in now and then as well . . .)

Did I mention there's a shower on site?

Oh, and there's a shower . . .

Did I mention there's a shower on site?

Oh, and there's a shower . . .

And Jerry will re-rig said shower so that next year all or most of the water will stay inside the shower stall  rather than end up in South Dakota like it did at times this year.

The stock tank is great to turn a palm leaf hat into a cowboy swamp cooler.

We also have hand washing facilities right next to the shower with mirrors for those who may want to shave or get a bathroom mirror picture for their Facebook account.

Anyone planning on coming out, we should tell you that if you have a telescope you need to bring it, the chance to get that far away from any major light polution is very rare.

If it don't work right type Sargent Nebraska into the search and line the red arrow up in the center and bring it up.  A newer site and seems to have a glitch now and then.

The night sky is indeed a treat!  Seems we always spend some time after sundown looking for satillites.  The flash they can make when the rotation catchs the sun just right is a shock the first time you see it!  Like being back at sea for me.

Maybe we can use it on "The Moro"? Or maybe make a bunch of "Moros" to mow down!

I modified the Moro last week so that it can be used as a dinger. That way you can shoot it multiple times as it attacks you or you can still use it the we did this year, as a knock down. It's funny, as a dinger you can actually stop it's advance with a 1911... until you empty the magazine anyway.  :o

I know. :-\

I know I'm prejudiced, but if I could only attend one match per year this one would be it and I attend some really outstanding matches; the GAF Grand Muster and the AZSA World Championships come to mind. The camaraderie, the food, the format; I think it's worth the work I put in. I just wish I could share it with more people.

I agree. This is the best match of any type I ave ever attended. Others need to experience it as well.

Col. Pitsptr,

Need to know, will the Gatling be shot as a side match on Friday, or will it appear in one of the main stages Saturday and Sunday?

If side match, I'll need to start campaigning now (read, bugging my Manager) for additional time absent in June.

I'm thinking about bringing up a small water smoker next year, plus some good fruit wood.  The smoker ain't 100% correct looking but the methods are and the food is very good.

I'm playing with rubs, I ain't done this in years, wife sure likes it.  Leftovers would be good in red flannel hash.

Sounds like a hoot!!

Investigated Airfares on SWA to Omaha.  Looks like a shade under $450 from Phoenix, non-stop early bird check-in guaranteeing aisle seat.  Fly in Thursday land Omaha 2ish, Fly out Monday PM 3ish.

What time do festivities start on Friday?

I can probably stay at Offut AFB Guest house Thursday and Sunday Nights

We shall see what things look like after the first of the year.  I may even be able to Car Pool with Bow View Haymaker if I can get sufficient time off to make the drive.

We start the Expansion Era Match around 08:00. The long range match is in the afternoon & evening.

I never like to "volunteer' anybody, but there's usually someone coming from or through Omaha that you might be able to share a ride with. If you get into Omaha around 2:00 you still should be able to get to Sargent by 7:30 or 8:00 pretty easily.

Was not sure if Camping Facilities were avail Thurs Night who knows.  If it is anything like Montana it is still light enough to stack hay until 9 - 10 PM, learned that well summer of 71 after I got home from RVN.  Change sprinkler Line, eat dinner and work 3 -4 more hours.

Hallo the fire!

This is great news.   I so wish I could have made it this past year, the grand muter too. But life has a way of getting in the way.

for those wondering, I am still alive, and (I hope) still fit for service.  Lots of life changes these past months.

I do hope and plan on making the trek back to good Ol' Nebraska next summer for this great event.

I miss the Nebraska sky and Del's cookin', and everyone else too. And the shooting.

I am going to start making plans now.

Does anyone know of or have a good wedge tent to sell? and (let's see) I'll need a haversak, and canteen strap, and maybe a .45-70 mills belt and,.......

I have that one somewhere, this is newer, the rotunda at the state capital, one of my daughters got married there.  We got there early for pictures and when they were done with me I wandered around.  Ended up walking around with some tourists for a bit and showing the place off, LOL they thought I was a docent.  Also went to the gift shop and the lady there and I ended up looking through John Cater's Solomon Butcher book and I was showing her things in it I had noticed.   ;)

I have two 32 cup and 3 20 cup ones and with summer I'm well covered on that, in 2009 at Fort Hartsuff I had one 32 and  two 20's and Paul brought his 32.  We were well covered only I should have brought mostly pre-ground cause we gave Rick's arm a work out.

BTW I brought 7.5 pounds that weekend and we had to get extra and ended up going through about 9 pounds.

The insulated jugs are the only thing I can think of being short on.

Turn right on the first gravel road north of Sargent. As you proceed down the gravel road, scan the ridge to your left for a large open area with one lone tree standing at the top of the ridge. That's where the camp is.

Not sure but dang you'd think a 30-30 and a model 10 Smith & Wesson would work, get ya a pair of lace up work boots, a pair of bibs and a flannel shirt and be a moonshiner.  (OK I think this came up in one of our camp fire sessions one time.)

I think the guys in Colorado only allow "pistol" calibers in their main match, due to close range steel targets, but Pitspitr can set it up different I suppose. The usual thing seems to be a Thompson and a 1911, but they say anything pre-1949. There was some talk about M-1 Carbines, but I don't know if anyone has been able to get one to function within our velocity limitations.

Del's idea is a good one, just bring something a farmer from the 1930s might have. While it wouldn't be very competitive, due to six shot capacity, I have a Marlin pump in 25-20 that seems to be something that might have been leaning behind the door of some farmhouse in the thirties. And a S&W 32-20 that I can't use in any other CAS type shooting that I have done.....

Sam P.
Pony Express and Delmonico gave such good answers that I don't know if I can really add anything...but I'll try

AZSA started as a bunch of IPSC shooters that had some Thompsons at home and came up with a way to play with them, similarly to the SASS started. I know you have guns that will work. The Thompson and the 1911 are the most used firearms, but I've seen Sumi's (sp?), bren's and lots of lever guns. My striker uses his '73, his Schofield and his pump Marlin 19 though he'd be better off using my 1911 or my S&W Model 5. At Byers you have to shoot pistol caliber rifles but can use jacketed bullets and no full auto. Some places allow full auto. (I will but only if you let me put a few rounds through it  ;) :o ;D ) The reason I waited so long to announce the match was that I wanted to make sure it was ok with the powers that be if I didn't run it exactly the way the matches I've attended at Byers were ran. I'm planning on using mostly steel targets with a few cardboard IPSC targets thrown in.

As far as clothes go I wear a pair of bibs, a Henley or a chambray shirt and a beat up old felt hat or a newsboy cap. I've seen everything from cowboy clothes to a 1930's State Patrol to double breasted, pinstriped suits with fedora's Think The Untouchables, Bonnie & Clyde, Legend's of the Fall or You Know My Name.

Don't be afraid to visit the Zoot Shooters forum and ask questions. http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/board,108.0.html (http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/board,108.0.html) They're a friendly bunch. There's a thread called "For New AZSA Zoot Shooters" which contains the answers to questions I asked before I attended my first match. http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,44871.0.html (http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,44871.0.html) I was one of the earliest members (#16L) but had never been able to attend a match until 2 years ago.

I'll have to get a new pair if overalls - I bought a pair for last years planned event, but I've lost about 100 lbs since then.

I have a 1911 & plan to take Jerry up on his offer to shoot his Thompson, but if it's still smoking from the guy before me my '92 will do fine.

Well it wouldn't make much sense to allow them for the GAF portion of the weekend but not the AZSA part. ::) So, yes, provided they meet the same specs as for GAF ei. lead bullets weighing less than 405 grs and moving at less than 1400 fps

If I had bullets brass and dies the 1905 Win 35 SL I have in the safe might be just the rifle for the AZSA match.  Don't have a period DA revolver but do have a 1911 not sure if that is legal or not.  Would probably help to have a multiple mags for the 1905 win or a really long one.

Given all that is already scheduled for 2014 as much as I would like to, don't see myself making the trip, could always hit the lotto and retire early but...

As long as the 1911 isn't all "tricked out" with things like a funnel magazine well skeletonized trigger or extended beavertails. It would be legal in AZSA AND the Era of Expansion match.

Given all that is already scheduled for 2014 as much as I would like to, don't see myself making the trip,

OK, we may have to go by the book this year.   ;D

Nothing is more certain to secure endurance and capability of long-continued effort than the avoidance of everything as a drink except cold water (and coffee at breakfast). Drink as little as possible of even cold water. Experience teaches old soldiers that, the less they drink on a march the better, and that they suffer less in the end by controlling the desire to drink, however urgent.

It clearly says " long-continued effort" and "on a march" which leads me to think after supper would be the time to make up for all that abstinence during the day's march  ;)

This might make an interesting dessert for supper.  May want to move camp a bit more south west. ;D

STEWED PRUNES.

Wash and pick over the prunes, rejecting imperfect ones; put them to soak over night in the water (cold) they are to be cooked in, using only enough water to cover them. Put the prunes on the fire where they can just simmer during three hours (prunes require longer cooking than other dried fruits because of their thick skin). Do not let them boil, nor use a vessel of iron. Keep them closely covered. If carefully cooked they present a plump appearance and are not broken or burst (this defect gives them a slovenly look, the reverse of appetizing). As the prune contains much sugar, more should not be added; the fruit taste is more prominent without additional sugar. If, however, in-creased sweetness is desired, the sugar should not be added till about five minutes before taking off the fire.

But this is also the same Army that considered fresh bread as unsuitable for the troops, so they set it out for a day before using. Considered more healthy that way?? But I also understand that officers got fresh, I guess they could handle the "unhealthy" fresh bread.

Back to water, in French Foreign Legion, when on the march, they were supposed to wear the canteen with the belt gear over the canteen straps, so they couldn't easily drink between rest breaks. May have had more to do with conserving water in the desert than anything else, though.

As of this minute Bro. Rope and I are planning to attend. Considering the location of the Muster as to it's  remoteness and those who have already confirmed their attendance, I feel that the presence of the Senior Chaplain is a must to keep things in a relative state of sobriety. Remember also that the consumption of spirits without offering a wee nip to the two head Scotsmen will be quite seriously frowned upon.

Scout refers to the shooting category not the persona. As Dalton said if you want to shoot your '76 you will shoot in the militia class.

I will dress as a officer of the staff, but will shoot in the Marksman class, not the Staff officer class.

Another question came up regarding round count. If you intend to shoot one of the 1-gun classes (Forager, Infantry, or Staff Officer) be sure to bring enough ammunition to engage ALL targets, not just the pistol targets. If one of the rifle targets is too far away for you to hit it with your shotgun you will move forward until you can.

Forager is a 2 gun class, revolver and shotgun.  Staff Officer (handgun) and Infantry (Rifle) are the one gun classes.

I really have no idea what to do for the zoot match. I have a 1911 and a m1 carbine but my loads for it are iffy. I have no clothing that would be appropriate.

You don't have cowboy or wild bunch guns?  Do you have a Henley or a white cotton button up shirt or a chambray shirt and bib overalls or dungarees and a beat up nondescript hat?  You don't have to dress like a gangster or a g-man. How about being a WWI veteran? There are lots of options.

Last year on the way home from the World's championship at Byers the waterpump on my pickup went out  and rather than get my good clothes greasey I changed into the clothes I'd shot in. The guy st the parts store  suggested that he had a mule out back that I could use to plow the south 40 with  ;)

I don't really have a plan for the Zoot either...I thought before about just being a farmer and shooting my Marlin pump 25-20, but then, it might not knock anything down, and I don't have enough brass to hit all the targets 3 times. Maybe a WWI Vet? Hmmm... Could a WWI vet shoot his war trophy Mauser 98?I know it's not competitive with a Thompson, but I don't really care about winning it anyway(like there's any chance of that), just to have fun.

Well, not most places, but I'll allow it as long as the ammunition is loaded to GAF specs.

Just a quick note about costumes for the Zoot match.  In an attempt to keep it from becoming a military reenactment sport (not that I think that’s bad) Hustler prohibited all military uniforms.  I convinced him to revise that to allow military uniforms if they had a relationship to the prohibition era.  Some examples would be Coast Guard, RCMP or Mexican Federalies.  If you want to wear a 20s or 30s uniform please be creative with your back story.

On the other hand AZSA costumes are really easy.  Just about any Good Will store (you may have to hit more than one) will provide most everything you need.  A bit oversized suit (single or double breasted, with or without a vest, the wider the lapels the better) will be great.  If you’re going to wear a tie with that suit remember to tie it short so it ends at about mid stomach.

How about knickers, very popular in the 20’s and not just for golf but that’s a great AZSA costume as well.  If you can’t find knickers any loose fitting pants bloused just below the knee with a big rubber band will give you the look.  Hang them from a pair of suspenders (even I can sew buttons on a pair of pants) and you’re good to go.

Button up shirts and sweaters were popular but t shirts weren’t.  As a matter of fact what the kids today call a “wife beater” was the t shirt style of choice in that time but it was also rare for someone to go out of the house in just this shirt.

Everyone wore a hat and the first thing everyone thinks about is the fedora, but remember, the snap brim (driver style) hats were almost as popular.  In the west the cowboy hat never gave way to the fedora.  How about a straw boater or skimmer, this was the summer time hat of choice for many a man in the 20s and 30s.

Hope that helps.

Outstanding reply Bat! Thanks!
I wasn't aware of the Uniform prohibition so I'm glad you pointed that out! Not that I own a 1930's uniform. ;)

I’ll leave firearms decisions up to Pitsptr but AZSA rules don’t normally allow .22’s for anyone but juniors if that’s what your PPS is chambered in.  Please bring it in any case I would love to get a look at it.

Just a reminder, if you won't be camping and haven't already committed irrevocably to a motel room, that an excellent (albeit perhaps a bit more expensive) place to stay is the Comstock Premier Lodge Bed & Breakfast/ Hunting Lodge .... which is only about 1.5 miles (as the crow flies) from the Muster campground. It is maybe four miles or so around by road .... but significantly closer (and thus much quicker and more "gasoline friendly") than the 25 miles or so from either Burwell or Ord.  Another advantage is that the Saturday night banquet is being held there I understand (unless Jerry has changed that) - very convenient indeed for getting cleaned up and dressed in your finery.

Don't know how the cost compares with the motels, but the regular rate is reduced to $85/night for GAF Muster participants (regularly $110 a night for any of the rooms) ... and for the particularly frugal minded - if you aren't traveling with family and don't mind sharing - there is a 4-single-bed "bunk room" (barracks ?) with an adjacent two-shower "locker room style" bathroom available for the same nightly rate -

Roger and I stayed there for the 2012 Missouri Muster and very much enjoyed it.  If you were there that year, you may remember the proprietors of the Lodge coming by the Muster campsite one evening.  Garry James and I are booked there for this year, sharing a  room with two Queen beds and private bath.

..... Just sayin' .....   ;)

Long range can be anything from great to what a Hoover vacuum does, in other words it can suck.

However to be truthful this time of year it is often gusts and some-days you can watch and tell when it dies down, that is the best time to shoot, those few seconds the gust is down.

Funny thing is in the right conditions the range at our farm can cause a bullet to rise as it goes over an up-draft caused by the water way, moist air and a hot sun,

I have done some, won a 3rd in the state games years ago at 300, not impressive unless you consider I whooped a bunch of guys with much better rifles with a Savage 99 in 243 with a 1X3.5 Scope in lightweight class.

I'm going to see if I can find the right rifle maybe this winter and shoot just the long range next year, that would be easy to do and still cook as long as no one would mind me jumping in and saying I had to be next based on cooking timing.

BTW last year it was a good thing everyone was shooting open sights, if no the mirage that had to be going on could make someone seasick, if I remember right they were having trouble spotting with optical devices.

I am at times a hunter of sod poodles of which Jerry has none, lucky for him.   I plan on finding the time and making a trip next spring to do that again, it's been a while.

It's an extra one. Older model with ported breech, no cleaning rod. Chamber tolerances a bit generous so it can take any case length  10.4 X 38r round. It has a tendency to bell out the shoulder of the case a bit, but once it's fire-formed all you need to do is neck size. Good shooter, though.

The one I use is newer model, 1877, without porting and has ramrod. Built with tighter tolerances so the cartridge case looks the same after firing as it did when it went into the chamber unfired.

Not exactly like a trapdoor, since the breechblock hinges to the side, instead of from the front. I believe Canada kept the Snyder longest, they never adopted the Martini, went straight to repeaters after the Snyder.

No, I understood that. What I meant was that it was originally a design to take advantage of leftover parts and complete muzzleloading rifles while at the same time allowing the change over to breech loaders.

You're right, Jerry, it was an attempt (quite a successful one, I might add) to convert rifles already on hand, instead of going to the expense of adopting a totally new rifle.  Probably a good idea, also, in that firearms technology was advancing so rapidly that often a new design was virtually obsolete by the time it was produced and in the field.  Cost was always the over riding factor, though.  Even as late as the 1930's, the Marine Corps stayed with the 1903 instead of the M1 primarily because the Navy (who controlled the purse strings) spent all their money on battle ships and there was nothing left for new rifles.  In their defense though, in light of how well the 1903 has performed, switching to the M1 would probably have appeared largely to be change for the sake of change.

Yes, the Snider-Enfield conversion was adopted in 1866 as a practical and economical means of converting the existing stocks of tens of thousands of muzzle-loading .577 Enfield rifles to breech-loaders.  It was intended merely as a stop-gap expedient pending adoption of a "purpose-built" breech-loader . i.e. the Martini-Henry rifle which went into production about 1871 (although the final version of the Mark I M-H wasn't approved until 1874).  Because of the Fenian threat, Canada was the first part of the Empire to have its military forces fully re-armed with the Snider - i.e. by the end of 1867 - but then we stuck with it as our primary-issue military rifle far longer than any other part of the Empire - we finally began replacing it with the Magazine Lee-Enfield rifle in 1896/97!  In that respect the Snider-Enfield is unquestionably the quintessential Canadian military breech-loading rifle of the 19th century .... the reason I am "regressing" to it from my usual Martini-Henry ....

Jacob Snider, the inventor of the conversion system (which won out over quite a few other designs submitted at the request of the War Department,) was an American by the way;  he ended up dying in poverty in Britain in mid-1866 while struggling to get monetary compensation from the British government.  They finally paid what most consider to be a wholly inadequate sum to his widow ....

I've got a Snider conversion, one of those French muskets converted in Belgium and chambered for 12 gauge, been in the family a long time and no, I am scared to shoot it.  Although the last time it was shot was in 1945 and it killed a pheasant, with a smokeless shell, buckshot surplus reloaded with lead shot.   :o

Del, was that a musket converted by the Belgians, or a French converted musket converted to a shotgun later?

http://d1q1tydbf3ejpe.cloudfront.net/objet/2010/05/06/1750410/1750410-21750410-c1n.jpg

These seem to be somewhat common converted to shotguns, but in original condition pretty pricey. Similar system to a Snyder. They were used as a secondary weapon in the Franco Prussian war, odd that the secondary weapon used a metallic cartridge, but the primary rifle, the Chasspot, was a needle gun using linen cartridges.

I'm not 100% sure, but it is a 12 gauge, remind me at the muster and we'll pick each others brains over it, seems almost no two I've ever seen are alike, some are stamped Zulu, a couple show in Butcher photos.

I don't have much information to pick, actually. I never saw an original, or a shotgun conversion in person. Only original I have seen for sale was on Gunbroker for about $3200. :o I guess they did a good job of finding and converting most of them. Maybe they preferred them over SnyderEnfields because the caliber was already close to 12ga size, I think the original musket was about .72 cal, and they didn't sleeve it down for the conversion.

For the Zook Shooters, I will bring 2 pistols to the match for sale.
1) Savage 1907/17; 10 shot 32 acp,it is a 1907, with the slide & hammer of the 1917. The difference between the 1907/17 vs the 1917, the grip frame is narrower, than the 1917, & there are no screws in it, the 1917 has a larger grip frame, & has a  the only screw on the gun. asking $250.00.
2) A Polish pps 43, 7.62; Never been fired, in its current configuration. I ordered 2 about the same time, figuring 1 wouldn't be able to come through, anyway, ended up with 2, my loss, your gain, asking $300.00.

Interesting... I believe Savage autoloaders were among the myriad of small automatics the French purchased during WW1, in addition to many styles of Spanish automatics. Expansion Era with a Berthier, maybe....

Speaking of the Zoot shooters, I was in a local Gun Shop today, they had a new Thompson, for a mere $1,200something, as well as a 1907 Winchester .351, and a Remington 81 in .300 Savage. Too bad the '81 couldn't be used in main matches, even at Pitspitr's range, I doubt it could be loaded down enough and still function.

I have a weapon question in relation to my 15 year old son. For the Expansion Era match he would like to shoot a revolver rather than a 1911 (Which always malfunctions in his hands!) He obviously has a SAA but that would be way out of place for a US soldier at that time. I do have Colt Police Special in .38 made in 1911. Could he carry that as a private purchase firearm? My only other choice is a Colt Official Police in 32-20 which has the same basic form as a Colt New Army and we could squint. If none of these are acceptable he will use my 1911.

GAF has definitely been hard on my gun budget.  In the last year I've bought three Krag's.  All are shooters, not collectors.  Each one better than the previous one.  Now, I don't need three.  The first was a 98 NRA style carbine.  The second a full length refinished 96 rifle and the last a 99 carbine that I think started life as a rifle but it looks great from a distance of a few feet.  Not sure what I want to keep but I should know by the muster.  I'll bring them all with me.

I also found a matted framed print of "The Defence of Rorke's Drift" (attached below) at an estate sale and bought it.   It has a Cherry frame and doesn't fit in the room I thought I would hang it in.   May still hang it in the living room but someone else has a say in that decision as well.

Question for the Match Director -

Jerry:  As you know, I am entered in Black Powder Rifleman, with the intention to shoot the main match entirely with a Snider-Enfield, to be in keeping with my circa 1866-70 Canada Militia Infantry field uniform.  With the time fast approaching when I must depart, I am in the throes of finishing up my loading.  Due to a mis-count, I find that I don't have enough bullets ready to ensure that I have a sufficient number of loaded .577 Snider rounds to complete the main match -  depends on how much I miss, I suppose .... something which may be a bit more likely than usual while shooting a Snider!  Time is too short to set up another casting session .....

Anyway, I have nearly 50 Martini-Henry rounds loaded already and could switch to a M-H as a "back-up" .... but am wondering if it would somehow adversely affect eligibility for a field uniform award if i must use a (slightly) "period incorrect" firearm in the main match?

As another possibility, I do have my reproduction 56-50 Spencer rifle on my import permit, and also have a fair number of rounds loaded for it.  It is "period correct" for my impression .... but of course is a repeater.  Would I be permitted to use it as a backup in the main match, provided I "single load"?  (Mind you, maybe everyone would concede that the Spencer is so inefficient as a repeater .... i.e. half-cock hammer, work the clumsy action to eject shell and chamber another, full-cock hammer, fire, repeat .... that it really offers no advantage over firing a Snider, anyway ....   ;D  )

Well, I do prefer that everything "goes together" as much as reasonably practicable ... which is why I think it might be neat to use the Spencer .... of the approximately 3,000 Model 1865 Spencer rifles (i.e. as opposed to carbines) that were produced, 2,000 came to Canada and into the hands of the Militia to meet the Fenian threat .....

But yes .... I did forget I'd be judging costumes this year ..... guess that means I can't win, eh?   ;D

I hope I don't get in too much trouble for being AWOL.
I should arrive at camp sometime on Thursday.
shooting a trapdoor rifle and converted Remington revolver with smokeless, and a p17 enfield and 1911 for expansion.
might have for sale the p17, 2 converted Remington revolvers, a pietta nickel colt and maybe an emf 1873 in.45 colt..
Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

They're nice shooters, Stu. A bit heavier than an '03, soaks up some recoil. Mine has a somewhat heavy trigger with a some creep, though. If I'm gonna shoot it and the Springfield in the same outing, better to shoot the Springfield first, to avoid "surprises".

It is only a half day event, but we do try to squeeze in more targets than on a normal stage. I shot it staff officer last year with my 1911 and have 12 magazines. Here's my dilemma.  Time is getting short and loading .30 caliber rifle rounds with Trail Boss turns out to be much more labor intensive than I would have ever believed.  If anyone has any advice I'm all ears (and thank you, I know I should have started this last month).  I was looking for a way to not have to load quite so many 30-06's for the 1903 but I've now hit on a new idea.

I can crank out .45 ACP like greased lighting.  Pitsptr you may have lightened my load with the right answer here.  Can I shoot pistol only in the Staff Officer Category (I'll dress as a Colonel) in the EEM skirmish stages even though I signed up for some other category in the main match?  I'm assuming I'll still have to shoot the 03 in the long range portion of the EEM but I've got surplus 30-06 coming out my ears so that’s no problem.

Thanks

Yes, you can do exactly that.  Just FWIW, Staff officer is just the name of the pistol only class, it does not mean you have to be a Staff Officer, or even an officer. Or any sort of military.

My pistol & rifle take the same cartridge, & the pouch I carry them in holds about fifty.  Seems like fifty was plenty.
Yes, but I think I saw you miss twice all last year, which meant it was twice more than I'd ever seen you miss before then.  I knew then you must have been ill.

As for loading rifle cartridges with Trail Boss, I use a 4 hole Lee turret.  In the second station I have the body of an old .44-40 powder thru die, with a .30 carbine expander inside it.  I run the case up into this, with the .30 carbine expander slightly belling the case, then dump the powder thru the die and go on to the bullet seater.  My rifle rounds thus load exactly like my handgun rounds.  I either have a coffee mug with Lee Dippers for the powder, or use my Lee Perfect measure, both set up next to the press.

I use this same arrangement for Krag, .303, 7.62x54r, and .30-06.  Lee sells the components needed for custom set ups like this.

Finally thought of the safest to transport my Coehorn in the  car, remove from the carriage, & stash it behind my front passenger seat packed firmly in place & the seat back partially reclined. I have transported a couple of times in the carriage, & in my trunk, but kinda bothered me, that in a head on, I would have 65lbs coming from behind.

Thursday, after arrival, I will put together a 3 man crew & will go over loading & shooting procedures. This will be the first time I have fired it, so definitely blanks, at 1.5oz of Fg, & use fuse, so no one will be within 25ft. After a couple of shots at 1.5 oz , we will do a 2oz with & a 2oz with cannon primer & lanyard. I was looking at putting some projectiles together with quickcrete, but didn't like the amount I would have to buy for the little in need. If someone can bring a small coffee can full of quickcrete, let me know, & I will bring 4 small cans for making projectiles. Thursday night, I will also try firing a 2"x3" wooden dowel as a projector. Donn the road, I will be looking to try a 2lb cannon ball sinker.

Friday afternoon, I plan to go over the safety procedures for firing, & can do live fire for about 10 shots, Allowing any who want to participate, do so. I will also bring a 50 caliber model that people can practice with before jumping on the Coehorn if they desire.

I still load with only a single stage press, Lyman powder measure, and 50 round loading blocks. No difference in loading Trailboss and any other powder as far as I could tell.

Dusty, There's some locals here that do competition with mortars, They use a cast lead ball, with a ring cast into it with a streamer attached.  That way they can find the balls, both to score the shots, and pick them up for re-use.

When I purchase the 2lb, canon ball sinkers, the eyelet is installed, so it would be easy to attach a streamer.

Bat, yes you can shoot as staff officer as Drydock said; however, I have 100 rounds of .30-06 trailboss loads that I won't be using. you can borrow some if you want.

I'm assuming I'll still have to shoot the 03 in the long range portion of the EEM but I've got surplus 30-06 coming out my ears so that’s no problem.

Thanks
Did I miss something? Is there now a separate long range EEM match? Not that it's a problem, I probably have at least 500 rounds of various full power rounds for the '03.

Still haven't had a chance to work up a long range load for the Lebel, all I know is what I used last year won't work without more "Kentucky Windage" that I like. Might become a Swede for the long range, although I've never worked with it for long range before either. At least I have the right components on hand to just pick a load out of the book and give it a try.

Pony, I've heard rumor that a 160 round nose and 4831 is a good start, I think that is a 100% load but look, don't trust me.  Seems I read that several times over the years.

YES, there IS a long range component to the EEM part of the match.  Same as for the Main Match.  More shooting!

Del, I don't have any 4831 or 160rn, but will probably use 160 or 140 bthp, and 4064.

Dusty, I think I have some quickcrete, from my shed project last month, but I won't arrive until Friday, so there might not be enough tome for it to harden. Using cement cans for projectiles, you could put a loop of heavy wire in the end, and attach a streamer that way, make them easier to find and re-use. Just be sure not to hit Jerry's long range target  frame, I don't know if it's rated for artillery use.....

Question. Will there be some downtime for a little more casual range exercise? I have a few rifles that haven't been played with much yet, and might enjoy the outing. (New England Westinghouse and Remington M91s).
If so I will bring them.
Thanks and see you Fri AM.

DM, should be plenty of time for extra curricular shooting, I think last year we had 3 hours or more between the morning stage and afternoon one, but then we didn't have 30+ shooters then.

Edit: Dalton, is you're son coming along? I'll have my family there, and if I remember correctly, he's maybe a couple months older than Alyssa, 5 in August.

Looks like Friday night is the only real chance of rain, at 50%.

I'm not going to trust the 7.5mm Swiss revolver to take down targets reliably, so will bring my '58 Remington Navy with R&D cylinder as a back-up just in case.

Also not sure about the new tent. May just bring the trusty lean-to and an extra rain poncho.

See you Thursday.

Hey Jerry, shift me over to Staff Officer for the EoE as well,  I've been wanting to try that, see If my old DA revolver can keep up with yer heathen self shucker.

Plenty of time for Happy fire.  Folks will get the chance to shoot things they may have never handled before.

Grant, I'm gonna bring that No 2 I stole so's you can look at it.   ;D

Great! I will throw some of the neglected arms in to bring along for Happy Fire...

Pony, Wesley (Justin Time/Pooper Trooper) might be down sometime during the weekend, but won't be there for the duration.

Lonnie and I will be in Friday morning, hopefully early. ;)

:-[ I've been thinking that with the number of competitors we have this year I'd better not shoot 2 classes like I usually do. And since Grant has been talking trash about me shooting smokeless so I don't have to compete head to head with him ;) I'm planning on shooting a sooty trapdoor and Schofield. The problem is that I really enjoy shooting my Krag and my S&W. So the only solution I can think of is to shoot them as a really early entry in the EEM. Early as in about 1901, which also gives me an excuse to wear my new uniform.  :) The problem with that is I won't get to shoot my 1911  :'(

We'll shoot the EEM as soon as we can in the morning Probably around 9:30 as we'll have a lot of folks who have never shot here before and will want to make sure we have time to go over the rules of the skirmish format. We'll shoot till we get done (might have to break for lunch) then start sighting and shooting the long range match. We probably won't have quite as much "happy time" as most DOMM's with the increased participation and the fact that we'll be shooting 4 stages instead of 3. (It is the GRAND muster after all) But we'll try to see to it that folks have time for show and tell and such.

Oh sure .... You wait until I regress to shooting a Snider-Enfield before you offer to go "head to head" ....  You do realize that, to compare ballistically, your  trapdoor needs to be in .58 Musket .... or in any event no more "modern" than a .50-70 .....    :-\

Garry and I have camped on the outskirts of Rapid City, South Dakota .... Will complete our sweep into Nebraska on the morrow, arriving relatively late in the day .... But hopefully early enough to  visit at the Muster site before retiring to the British  barracks for the night.

Col. Pitspitr:  A "gentle" reminder that a few far-traveled folks found it necessary to depart the Muster before the final results were known .... and thus have absolutely no idea what those results were!     ;D

I presume that you are still gathering your thoughts in preparation for compiling your full after-action report .... but a listing of at least the results in the various categories would be greatly appreciated!
