50-95 WCF compression die
« on: April 02, 2022, 08:07:57 AM »
Does anyone here use compressed blackpowder loads in their 50-95? If so, what have you found works for a compression die? Thanks!

I don't use a compression die, figgerd a 24" drop tube and 1/8" compressed by the bullet and fiber card was good enough.

I compress all my black powder rifle caliber cartridges. Make the dies on my lathe starting with a 7/8" diameter bolt and turning and threading compression plunger. From .45 colt, all the .40's. 45-70's. -90's, -110' and the .50's.
Accuracy dramatically improves with the effort at distance.

I compress all my rifle loads, and I have found the same results as kwilliams 1876.  If you can't make your own, you can generally get them from Buffalo Arms.

A little late to the party here, but do not compress black powder in any bottle neck case. Maybe a 1/16, but you run the risk of case separation.

Just do not compress wad past the shoulder. The .50-95 barely qualifies as a bottle neck as compared to the .45-75.  Many .40 cal. real bottle neck cartridges IE the .40-90, .44-77, .40-82 silhouette etc. all respond to compression with no case separation. Its a controlled powder compression, not mashing it.
