Proper ammo for uberti russian 45lc
« on: December 02, 2012, 11:19:24 PM »
Howdy,

I recently purchased the uberti russian in 45 colt and had a chance to take it to the range a couple times. The revolver is performing great, however I have now burned through my stash of 45lc ammo.

I have a small child and live in tight quarters, so unfortunately reloading is not an option at this time, so Im stuck using commercially available ammo. I have read many posts recommending only "cowboy loads" for the top breaks.  It seems there are 2 types of ammo out there, 250 grain @about 730fps or 200 grain @about 650 fps. Personally I would prefer to shoot the hotter of the two given that Im not planning to compete in CAS events with this revolver.

Im seeking advice on the proper commercially available load for the Russian from a safety and durability perspective.

Thanks!

Top breaks were designed in an era that predates our modern magnums.
I would only use cowboy loads in them.
Top breaks that were made more into the smokeless era are only either .32 or .38 S&W
Ruger only loads need not apply

Just got a reply from Uberti that any non+p commercial ammo is safe to use, so it sounds like Im good to go with the Ultramax 250grain/730fps loads.

Cowboy or standard pressure .45 Colt loads are all these guns are made to withstand.  Hot rodding the ammo for them is NOT a good idea at all!

Of course, the answer you got from Uberti is correct, they are designed for SAAMI spec ammo.

However as with all mechanical devices, you will put less wear and tear on it with lighter recoiling ammo. If it was me, and I did not reload, I would go for the 200 grain stuff, not the 250 grain stuff. No top break revolver is as strong as a solid frame revolver. Every time you fire it the barrel latch and joint is stressed. Less stress will mean less pounding and less tendency to stretch the frame.

That's my take on it.

By the way, I don't own a modern made Top Break, but I own several originals. Yes, the modern steel is stronger, but the design and the principles involved are the same. I would go for less recoil and frame pounding.
That’s bad business! How long do you think I’d stay in operation if it cost me money every time I pulled a job? If he’d pay me that much to stop robbing him, I’d stop robbing him.

Ya probably inherited every penny ya got!

Try .45 S&W - it behaves like .45ACP and is enjoyable to shoot.

Ship your empty brass to Ten X Ammo.  Ask them to reload your brass with their smokeless 200gr 45 Colt bullet.

Its a realatively mild load that runs well in the Ubert No 3's.

Aside from reloading your own, its the next most economic way to feed your revolver.

I've been loading my .45 CAS loads with one of these for about  6 years now
Nylon mallet, loading manual, Lee Primer Pocket Cleaner and Lee hand primer not included

Great for the field, but for me having a bench mounted press is the best way to go for production.  For these guns they seem to be sighted in for 250 grain bullets otherwise lighter bullets seem to impact low.

Thanks for all the replies. Ill have to try the 200 grain loads, 250 is consistently hitting high for me.

In theory which latch is stronger the Schofield or the Russian? (In reproductions)

Russian by far stronger.
Schofield is easier and faster to open.

Love my Russians. They have a very comfortable grip design.
Of all of my revolvers they spend the most time out of the vault
Followed by my Speed Six
Similar grip feel to both come to think of it

The LEE Hand Press is a great press to start with.  I takes standard dies that you can still use as you graduate to other presses, and still have the Hand Press available for odd jobs. for processing cases while watching TV, or for use at the range during ammo testing.
