The number does sound a little high, but the seller could be mistaken.  Is the carbine have the rimfire firing pin? I know of no reproductions with a rimfire firing pin. The cartridge is correctly called .56-.50, but would fire the commercially made .56-.52 cartridge interchangeably. (Christopher Spencer thought the .56-.50 had too much crimp, and created a bottlenecked version for the .50 caliber guns.)
Ride to the sound of the guns, but watch out for bushwhackers! Godspeed to all in harm's way in the defense of Freedom! God Bless America!

"Peppy",

serial # also appears on the underside of the barrel, but is covered over by the wooden forend . . . see if the serial #s are the same;  also, post a good sharp photo of the serial # at the top of the receiver might help.

serial number makes it a New model,NM should be stamped on the barrel just ahead of the action it should also have a Spencer cut off fitted

You are looking at Spencer's final carbine model, the "New Model," also sometimes called the "Model 1868."  Marcot estimates 5,000 were produced, but I see other models  much more often.  I suspect most were exported.

The serial number is in the correct range for that model.  The front bands usually have a sling swivel, but I have seen them both ways.

As DJ stated, that’s the last version of the Spencer carbine. Also of note is that it has the Spencer version of the cutoff instead of using the Stabler cutoff.

Rock Island auction has several this weekend, you can watch the auction live
to see what they go for. Has your metal been polished? it looks very nice /shinny
for that age. Anything touched or changed will bring down collector value. From
what I've seen, a decent, shootable one will bring $2000- $3000. Some are
asking more on gunbroker, and a near perfect one could be considerable more.
I'm no expert, just what I've seen.

It's always hard to estimate without lots of detailed photos or having the gun in hand, but it looks like the breechblock has a flaw, it has widespread light pitting, and there is a crack in the wood (and cracks don't tend to get better).  It also appears to have been cleaned, but the markings I can see still look OK.

I recommend you look at the "completed" listings on a site like Gunbroker to see what comparable guns actually sold for.  You will probably see that prices for all the standard Spencer carbines (1860, 1865, 1867, 1868/NM) fall in the $1100-$2000 range unless their condition is either very very good or very very bad.

The one you are looking at strikes me as more of a shooter than a collector piece (assuming the bore and mechanics are good), and I would expect to find a similar carbine for somewhere around $1300-1500; I doubt you'll find one for under $1100 and I would consider $2000 pretty high.

Rock Island Auction sold 4 Spencers today. this is including 15% buyers premium.
lot 171 $2875,  lot 175  $2070,   lot 179 $1265,    lot 187 $978.  Condition is
everything. On gunbroker they can ask anything, but this is real people buying
real guns at the largest antique auction in the world.
