New Cimarron Frontier
« on: May 06, 2020, 05:23:07 PM »
Just picked up a Pietta 7 1/2 in Frontier from Cimarron. Beautiful revolver! (45 Colt)

The hammer cocks very smooth and light, feels like there is a really light mainspring but the trigger is a bit heavy, around 6-7 pounds with a hard break. Is this normal with the Piettas now? I haven't lit any charcoal off yet as I have just got it home and cleaned the factory oil off and re-oiled with Ballistol.

Now off to find a Colt base pin and base pin screw.

ETA:  Was answered by another owner, stating it is normal to feel light but has 100% firing.

You mean you got a BP framed model?  When you stated "Colt base pin screw".  Or are you referring to the crosspin latch?  Like Ubertis, the Pietta BP framed models should have the smaller more authentic screw in a little baggie somewhere in the box.

Someone else mentioned having a hard trigger from Pietta that sort of "bites" when it breaks.  They made a batch of those 5 or 6 years back, but thought that issue was fixed.

Anyway...pictures???

It is the Black Powder frame with a screw holding the base pin in place.  It comes with the ugly finger screw pictured below, and no other screw or part came with it. My Old Model P (Uberti) came with both thumbscrew and small screw.

Well then, you got shorted the screw!  When Pietta started making BP frame guns again for Cimarron, they only had the knurled finger screw at first.  Then they started adding the little one like Uberti did.  I would call Cimarron, they should send you the screw.

 ;)  Do you own a Hacksaw??   ;)

Pointless to go out and buy a "Colt" base pin.  I use a 32 tooth Hacksaw and remove the last 3/16 from the OEM "two stop" base pin.  Then it seats back like it should and doesn't block the hammer.  The two stop base pin only serves to make BATFE happy for import.  STUPID "drop" test.

+ 1 to the maker of coffins

chuck it in your drill and use 32 tooth blade ( heck you don't even need the hacksaw handle just the blade ) then face it with a file and bevel the edge a bit  ... and Bobs your Uncle

nice looking BTW

Well, I will disagree a little bit.  Reason being that I HATE the Pietta base pin, with them being only notched on one side instead of having the groove go all the way around the pin.  PITA at times to get it inserted perfectly.  The Uberti Lightning and Model P Jr (Stallion) have the same type of pin, which I also hate.  If I had a Pietta, I would probably replace it with an Uberti pin (and cut THAT one short).

Medic15al, if you do plan on using a Colt base pin, you might want to do some measuring first.  I have heard of people using a Colt pin in an Uberti, and I have stuck an Uberti pin in a Pietta just to see if it fit (it did), but one poster on this site (I think) some time in the past year stated that a Colt pin would not fit his Pietta.  FWIW.

I just got the same gun except in 44-40. Mine was also missing the flush mount screw. Called Cimarron last week and one is supposed to be on the way. The trigger pull on mine is light 1 pound on the scale but it had a horrendous amount of creep worse than any gun I’ve ever owned. I kept working the action putting a little forward pressure on the hammer and it worked it’s self out. I’m assuming there must have been a burr.  I’m pretty happy with how the action feels now. As far as the colt base pin I put one in my great western 2 which is basically the same gun but it was a little bigger diameter and had to be turned down. Overall I like this gun and it shoots excellent.

How/where did you get the pin turned to correct diameter?

I turned it down myself. You may not have anything to be concerned about though. Out of curiosity I just tried the pin from my colt in the Frontier and it fit. It wouldn’t fit in the Greatwestern  though. Hopefully you won’t have a problem.

Well crud. Looks like I'll need to get on the phone with Cimarron this next week as well. I've got the Pietta Cavalry and it only has the knurled screw as well. Pulled the base pin out and threw in an old Colt pin I had and it fit perfectly. Only down side I really see with this one is while it has the US stamping on the frame, it doesn't have any patent dates at all. The barrel has 'FRONTIER 45 COLT' stamped on the side and while it has the proper V notch rear site the front side has no taper at all. Might be a good candidate for a barrel swap at some point, but it shoots well. Triggerguard seems to be the round bottom type and the only visible serial number is on the frame. Hmmm, maybe I should post a new topic on reviews of all my different cavalry replicas, might give me something else to do besides the wife's chores. ;D

Are the stamping where the patent dates normally are?

It is good hearing the Colt pins fitting!

Pathfinder sounds like they put the wrong barrel on your gun. I would be calling Cimarron. My gun has the correct sights both front and rear. It also has the patent dates stamped. Though it’s a frontier model frontier is not stamped on it like the others I’ve seen only 44-40. Which I prefer. Overall I’m satisfied with the gun. Just wish they would have put the right screw in the gun and left that big ugly one out. I’m still waiting on the one Cimarron is supposed to be sending. Close to two weeks now sine I talked to them.

Gol-durn it!!!!!!!

My Colt base pin from Peacemaker Specialist will not fit. Fits thru the frame fine but the permanent cylinder bushing is too small.

It is a Fire blue base-pin if'n anybody needs or wants one..

Also, I ordered two flush fitting base pin screws and removed the eyesore thumbscrew. At least it fits.

I pulled my Charcoal Blue Cimarron Uberti Old Model P base pin and put it in the Pietta as it is grooved all way around. I shoot it more often than the Uberti. B/P only of course.
