Title: Issue crimping with Lee factory crimp die

After carefully loading my 44 mag rounds to 1.605" upon crimping the bullets are being pushed into the case a couple thous. after crimp they measure 1.603, 1.604. Am I doing something wrong?

That is the roll crimp , it will ease the bullet down a Thou or two

Ah that's good to know. Thought maybe my case mouth's were too big.

I hope this isn't Apples & Oranges.

I'm loading the 44-40 and it seems that the Redding Taper crimp die is the preferred die for it.  However, it too pulls my bullets down a few thousands, as do my Cowboy RCBS & Lee dies.  So, I use a Lyman 310 tool die in a bushing in my Dillon 550 to crimp with and have no bullet "push (or pull) down".   That die is a roll crimp.  What the difference is between the dies, I don't know.

     In all likely-hood, you and I have an imperfect match between case length and the bullet crimp groove. 

All of my cases are the same length.  However, they are Starline bulk cases and when new, (unfired) vary in length .006".  The longest will be 1.298" which is still .007" shorter than maximum case length.  And after they are fireformed to establish the shoulder, they are even shorter.  Probably, if I could obtain longer cases, there would be no problem.

So, I suggest either change your OAL or try different dies.

I found the same with .45s.  When loading the bullet was being pushed back into the casing. I ran them through the decapper with a full stroke and then loaded, and the problem disappeared.
