Take a look at this thread:  https://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php?topic=64846.0 for an explantion of the problem.  The original Winchester bolt/ejector seems to be different than the replacement Uberti rifles.  I wound up turning the Jamison brass to Uberti size.

I am selling my Uberti 1866 Yellow boy in 38spl octagonal barrel, less then 100 rounds fired and in excellent condition slight patina on brass. I replaced the front sight and rear site with a ladder site, I have both original sites. Beautiful wood and a finely made sporting rifle..... Ships to lower 48 only no sales to California, shipping from NC make sure your FFL will except from me with my Drivers license. Buyer pays actual shipping to your location, I am in NC. First I'll take it with a PM get the rifle pay pal ff or USPS check. $900 + shipping.

Dang that tubing has went up , its been a few yrs. since i bought some . Back then it was around 30 bucks for six ft. Sounds like a nice project . I look forward to seeing it done . Good luck Amigo .,,,,,DT

Thanks Dusty, will do.  Finally got a mag button made up for my short tube.  Hopefully I have copied what you have done previous.  Changed the barrel out to a 24", 45-60 while I was at it. Looking forward to getting it all back together.  Just short the tube.

$100 for a 3' section delivered to my door.  Tube on the way!  Thanks much!

Likely the big reason was that with a rifle - they could hit things regularly - with a carbine, that could drop off.

Not all were a Louis L'Amour character who could hit things with a Single Action Army at 200 yards in fading light and moving away - but then, no one was.

The rifle was a tool - like the long-barrelled shotgun was - it was depended on to bring home meat.

The carbine was more convenient for a riding man.

By the time the Silver Screen got up and running, more carbines showed up in saddle scabbards - in the movies, rifles were at the home place or in the chuck wagon - so the carbine became the go-to sidearm that folks wanted to believe in because they were what was seen - and 'everybody' knew that Hollywood was an accurate portrayal of the times.
