Need to fix it, but I can't solder, and I can't weld
« on: September 23, 2022, 08:20:50 PM »
I can cut metal, but I never learned to weld.  Can't solder worth a darn, either.  But I've got a broken sight that needs fixin'.

This is off an M1860 Dreyse Fusilier Rifle.  It's marked for a naval organization, which might explain the pitting.  As you can see, one of the little legs at the base has broken off.  I tried (repeatedly) to silver solder it, but it just keeps breaking.  Looking at the other, intact leg, it's surprising they didn't all break off.  Anyway, it looks like a micro-weld job, and I don't do welding.

If anyone has recommendations for how or where I can get this repaired, I would be interested.  Since the sight is about irreplaceable, I'm looking for a very reliable outfit.

I would venture TIG welding, perhaps an Auto Machine shop

;) I don't even think I would trust it to good ol' JB Weld.

I swear my silver solder wire, comes with flux and Ace stores carry it.  about $15,
I use MAP gas and that is enough heat to get a braze strong as a weld.
I used it for the broken hinge on a 41 Rem double derringer, and it's held for years.   Invisible too.
