Title: Civilian coat
Post by: pony express on August 01, 2020, 07:37:22 PM
Does anyone have a used civilian sack or suit coat suitable for 1890-1900 time frame, about size 50, that they would sell? Maybe one that has suffered "closet shrinkage". Doesn't need to be in perfect shape, it's for a shooting outfit, not dress wear.

How much would you want for it? I'm thinking a size 50 should be about right for me, since my 1887 US jacket is a 48 and it's a bit snug. That's assuming that the imported US jacket is true to size.

I guess it might work. I see quite a few of the pictures seem to have one guy wearing the "older style" button to the neck coat. I guess since I'm the guy with a 25 year old truck, 31 year old motorcycle, and a flip phone, maybe I'm the natural for that...

There's a couple in this pic, as well as some type of uniform coats:

I don't think you noticed but three of them have a pipe in their left hands.

Don't know if a deal has been done but I have a dark brown, cotton cord Sack Coat, size 52 and made by River Junction Trade Co. back in the late 1980s. It's been hanging in a closet since about 1995 and is in quite good condition.

Pony, let me know if it sounds like something you might be interested in and we can talk.

If you don't like what you see so far, go to e-Bay and type in your size of jacket and suit coat.  There will be all sorts of stuff you can modify if you need to.  Old tuxedos often work well to start with.

Hi

I bought a brown double breasted  overcoat a few years back from James Country Mercantile.  They're good, but not overly expensive.   If memory serves, you're a Missourian too.  Sack Coat is listed at $100.00.

Good luck with the quest.

Mine was 3 when I graduated. But it was several years later when we got together...

Planning on using my Swede Mauser. Don't have a proper Boer Mauser, so the Swede will have to be close enough. Plan on using it at one of the Sept Iowa Muster. When I started reading about the long range portion going out to 500 yards, well, At the Grand Muster "Ivan" was having trouble using enough "Kentucky windage" to get the Mosin Nagant on target at just 300. Soooo what rifle might I use, and then what impression can I use with it?

Couple of old cradle robbers , we are ....  I was 37 and "SHE" 27 when we tied the knot.

I have a  95/16 Spanish Mauser short rifle that is a sweet shooter , but never tried it out @ 300 yards.

Hi

I've seen that movie a few times, and I've never bothered to notice what the Cavalry was carrying.  It is odd to me that they were carrying 1860 weapons in the mid-18 70's.  I also didn't note when Quigley was supposed to have taken place, but it had to be at least 1875 minimum.  The Sharps had to have been invented, and he had to have gotten famous with it.  Chuck Hawks says that the 45-110 was introduced at the end of 1876.  That would make it 1877, even the British should have had their Colonists better armed at that point.

More likely the Martini Henry Carbine historically...

The Movie prop dept. more than likely had a better source of guns in the Enfield's

Haven't seen it. With my s...l...o...w... internet, probably won't, but I might try it if I'm up really early on a weekend.

I've only shot my Swede at 300 one time, at the long range stage at the Grand Muster. The stage is-3 targets at 100, 200, and 300 yards, you have to get 3 hits on the shortest to move up to the next longer and so on. Has a time limit and max 15 rounds, and 100 has to be standing, 200 CAN be sitting, 300 any position. If I recall correctly, with the Swede I got 9 hits with 9 shots, only time I've ever done that. But a couple of others beat me on time.

I was 50 and the Wife 35 when we married. Had our first kid(for both of us) at 51 and 36. Guess we're both late bloomers.

Coat arrived today. It fits! and the shirt fits too. It's a rare shirt that has sleeves long enough for me.

Unfortunately, most all shooting hobby activities are on hold for me. Finally got out "new to us" double wide on site, and most available spare time goes to that project. It's doubtful I'll get to the match in Iowa next week where I was going to wear that. But I did wear it earlier this morning when I went to our local match-temps were  low 50's when I went out this morning.

Yes Sir... Enfield 1864 Cavalry carbines.

There is another possibility for what might possibly be the actual issue carbine. The Monkey-tail WESTLEY-RICHARDS. Little known in America (some rifles made it to the British garrison in Canada, quickly replaced by Martini's due to cold weather problems with the WR ammo.) but in widespread use by British cavalry, and Boer hunters in South Africa. Here is a longish, but fairly in-depth article.

About 20 years ago my door prize at a larger shoot was a blue McGonigal town coat from Texas Jacks.  I really wanted it black and thought about dying it but a friend convinced me to leave it blue, and I'm glad.  Over the years the sun has really faded it (still bright blue inside) and it looks like it should!
