Evening all. Welcome to the 21 year of the 21 century.

New year in Montana brought a morning temperature of 11, and a high of 40.

We had 4 people call in sick at work today, so me and one other guy did their work. Sounds about right.

There was just recently a bunch of Carcano carbines imported from Ethiopia, both TS Carbines and Cavalry. I got a '91 TS from Palmetto State, pretty good condition for being stacked in a big metal shed for decades. I would think finding a lose bayonet for a cavalry carbine wouldn't be easy.

I hymned and hawed over those, I think when you linked to them  :-\ a while back. Classic FA has then now for   $269 99.

I decided to pass Already loading 30/40 , 303 British, 30/06  , 8 × 51 R Lebel   and 41 Swiss Vetterli

I just figured 6.5x52mm Carcano was some over reaching  :-\

However, the Carcano at the Gun shop is very affordable, bordering on " buy it you fool ! "
Even if I bought an original $49.50  bayonet from Sarco for it ,  it would still be under $200  :-*

Afternoon all.

40 degrees, wind chill below freezing, light rain.

I think I bought the only 38/357 dies for sale in the entire state of Montana today. I paid $54 for a 3-die Hornady. Also snagged some 105gr Cast Kieth style bullets, 500 for $30. All I lack now is pistol powder. They had a pound of Tite-wad, which should be fine for a light 38spl load, but I wanted to do more research before spending money on it.

Titewad is not listed for 105 gr .38 Spl loads. Longshot is a better choice.

Morning all.

Chilly in Missoula, built above freezing. At least, it’s 33.

Here’s another reloading question. Is there any reason not to use an RCBS #3 shell holder (for 30-06 and other standard case heads) to reload 38 with? RCBS calls for a #6,  but the 38 centers in the #3 and is held about the same as a 280 case is. The only difference is that the primer pocket  is smaller than a rifle, and as such has a little bit of wiggle room on either side(it is centered, just smaller than a rifle primer).. But I prime/decap with a hand capper, so it seems like it should work.

While the .38 case may fit, it isn't a tight enough fit for it to be solid enough if you have a case that sticks in the sizer/decapping die, it could easily pull off the rim damaging the case and making it very hard to remove it from the die. If you are loading on a single stage press I have a couple extra shell holders for .38/.357. Let me know and I'll mail one to you.

+4 on the shell holder, TK. It not only needs to push the case in, but needs to fit close enough to pull it back out. Also, if you're seating primers with the press, rim needs to fit or the case will push through the shellholder.

Understood on the shell holder.  I tried to order one from Midway, but apparently “in stock” now means “back ordered, estimated ship in 6 weeks.” So I cancelled that order.

Should be date for the 38 and Clays, burn rate is about like Red Dot, faster than Bullseye and slower than Unique.

TK, did you check other brands of shell holders? Lee, RCBS, Lyman, Saeco, all will interchange. Also try Graf &sons, but their "flat rate" 9.95 shipping would be a lot for just a shell holder.

Too fast burning for 28 ga.  Universal Clays is better for that, almost the same speed and Unique, the trio were supposed to Hodgeon's answer to Red dot, Green Dot and Unique when it came out, a cleaner burning version.  Problem was in the day it cost a bit more than them and trap and skeet shooters would rather save money since they clean their guns anyway. ;D  14 oz for the price of 16 oz didn't appeal to people who shot as much as those guys.   I ain't been around it in a long time but I bet  Red Dot and 700X rules that world to this day despite making a bit of soot. ;D

Very slow day at work today. Got done around 1, hung around at the shop and “helped” the owner paint a tank for a new truck until 3 (I stood around and grabbed him a beer once in a while).

I went to that local place (Selway if Roo is reading), and they didn’t have any Clays. But they had a truck in this morning and had a bottle of Winchester 231, so I grabbed that instead. Should be good for 9mm and 38 both.

25 in Great Falls, 35mph winds. Makes things fun. I get the “honor” of being the junior enlisted representative for my squadron at a meeting with a general. Then on the way home, I’m going to pick up my AR to take home.

My carry companion is a Charter Undercover. One of the originals that looks like a Chief Special. I keep it loaded with Buffalo Bore standard pressure 158gr SWC-HP. Basically the FBI load, but standard pressure. And I have an HKS speed loader with Winchester soft points.

The S&W 442 is a nice gun. I found that the pants I wore on Sunday has a pocket the right size for it. AKA watch pocket.

The shotgun shot all four shells without manual cycling. Got to remove the waterfowl plug.  ::)

'Tis 22 and overcast. High of 32.

They were feral Eastern Red Cedar that should have been cut out of the fence or sprayed several years ago.

To quote our late friend Arcey, "WOODEN WEEDS."    J Sterling Morton was not really our friend, Save the Prairie, cut a tree.    Remember only you can prevent a forest. ;)

Years ago,  did used to recycle plastic bottle and glass. Then they put up a sign, didn't want glass anymore. Ok. Then they welded shut the doors on the recycle dumpster and left it with a hole you could p[oke one bottle at a time into. Ummmm... no. took the trash bag full of plastic and threw it in the regular trash, where they've gone ever since.

Evening you all... just stopped in to share a photo from the Vietnam War era. Kudos to any of you that recognize the pilot. I wanted to point out his sidearm. S&W Model 15 combat masterpiece. He has it holster in a standard issue holster on a issued belt. It is the same type I used and have one here still today.  What I wanted to point out is that he had bullet loops sewed in to hold his extra ammo. Normally we used a double belt pouch that held 6 extra rounds each 12 total- with 6 loaded for 18. I think the Col. Has a few extra.  I imagine with his sidearm survival vest and helmet and parachute- his weight doubled.
I know there is a few Air Force alumni here and most of us love S&W’s.

Kenworth pilotage went well enough yesterday.  The drive home was far more interesting. Took 2 hours to go the 45 miles from Hamilton to Missoula because of snow. It didn’t help that I was in a 2wd flatbed. Ended up with 3-10 inches depending on where one felt like measuring.

I like them for shotguns. But I prefer a standard rod for rifles/handguns, as I can work on stubborn lead/copper fouling more easily.

Sunbody unstiffened palm leaf, cheap and durable.   Mine is now 10 years old and likely will have to be replaced by next year.   Can even soak them in a tank and use as a swamp cooler and can do the same with the bath tub and Dawn when the get sweaty and nasty.  Oh, they come in may styles oand are easy to reshape, just soak them, also get stiffer when wet.

Washoe County Nevada also has a drawing system for the general populace to receive the COVID vaccine.  Doing the eligible people by threat tiers, after Service techs of all sorts have been taken care of.
Put in my app (as one of those over 70) last part of last week.  Got a notification I was selected on Friday.  Got first dose yesterday.  (The wife hasn’t been so lucky; she has to wait for the next batch.) :(
So far, I haven’t grown any abnormal appendages or had any overwhelming urges to turn liberal. ::)  Go in for the second dose in 3 weeks (maybe that’s the one that alter your political standing)!  If so someone shoot me for the Zombie I may have become! :o :o

I'm registered as of today I'm 1-C the wife is also but goes to 1-B in December.

I'm tired of the extremist's on both sides, Santa should have delivered a lot of history and civics books for Christmas.  I am prouder every day as to have registered as an Independent from the Git Go and will never change so none of this on me as having voted what a party told me, I've always voted on my own thoughts and of course have done the right thing including sometimes not voting for either SOB to not give them an advantage.   I'm old, tired and grumpy and want both sides to just leave me the F alone.

Cool, nice to know the old phart is doing OK.

Burgers for supper, rest of the 10 pounds went into Sloppy Joes I'm working on, probably have a couple later when done, rest is going in the ice box and will get back on 1 pounds each and vacuum sealed.   Rita and I feeling better and doing our own shopping were getting back to where we want, maybe a bit extra due to time and hating to go to the store, Lexie jokingly called me a food hoarder.  To be truthful we could eat, drink coffee and iced tea for a month before we needed supplies and could go longer but not as many choices, tea bags might run out but at the present rate the coffee would last till June.  Been buying the 2-3 pound whole beans at Cosco and putting in pint bags.  Have about 8 kinds to chose from and maybe 12-14 pounds total.   Don't like drinking the same kind for long times.

Got maybe 100 frozen Glen or Rita entries that just need popped in boiling water till hot.  Sure helps when we have a bad day, beats Door Dash crap in cost and quality.

Going down to the Police station to register the new revolver and while out gonna pick up some nice red and yellow sweet peppers to slice for Chicken Fajitas.

Doctor's office called after my bloodwork yesterday with the results. He's putting me on an additional diabetes med. I guess sitting around in "social quarantine", taking too many trips to the refrigerator and cupboards, out of boredom or cabin fever, has elevated my A1C numbers a bit.

Expecting highs in the upper 40's today before a cold snap leading into the weekend. Flurries predicted, but no accumulation. Won't have to fire up the snowblower.

Enjoy the day.

Mine have went down since I found out about the problem, the weight hasn't but yet hasn't went up, so I monitor it for water retention and Heather says since the problem is my cooking and the blood numbers look good so not to worry about it.  Oldest daughter kinda yelled at me, thinks I go out to much, yeah 4-5 trips to the store a month, sorry I can't shop on line for groceries, tried that, half of what I want is not on line.   Got name on list for vaccinate so should be a little safer, not sure when though, they have to run the numbers and see where I fall.

Bought a 10 pound tube of burger, sloppy joes are simmering as we speak, granddaughter don't like them (now listed as boomer food) so Rita and I will have to eat them.  OK tomorrow the left overs will be put in vacuum seal bags with enough for 5 in each one.   Rita made up 10 pounds of tators as scalloped potatoes and those are bagged, probably have 100 or more individual entree's ready to plop in a pot of boiling water for lazy nights.  Taco meat, different pasta and other things too, doing fried rice Sat and fried drum sticks, chicken butts were cheap, not talking about the 15 pound bag of rice I bought and repackaged.  Got maybe 5 pounds of coffee of different kinds in pint bags, open, grind put in pint jar and good for 3-4 days.  Different kind every few days.   Planned on doing that in 2019 but things went south, what we had was nice but had to do way too much door dash when we got home.  Even food from your favorite restaurant kinda sucks in the living room out of Styrofoam and off TV trays.   And it gets expensive, you know me, I can serve pretty dang good food for what a door dash McD's meal costs.

A visit to the Toy store today netted a NEAT Score

This vintage Jay-Pee Swivel Duty holster for a 357 Colt  was in the $5 catch all basket ...SNAG !

It is dated 1944 ...but they were made into the 60's ...here "triple ace"  B.Gen Robin Olds  wears a similar  one circa 1965

We got 14.5 total, 2nd heaviest on record for one day, record still stands at 19.

Wife had to go get Covid test today for surgery on Friday, has had to cancel heart ultrasound twice because of snow.  Try again tomorrow.   She was all upset this morning, can't get the scooping guy on phone, must be scooping, Found out granddaughter has no snow type boots or proper pants to scoop that deep.  I ain't much use, she got the steps and the car cleaned off and her Yuppie not real but sorta 4WD went right out the driveway because the snow was only maybe a foot and no drifting.  Street better and 2 blocks to snow route, should be fine, left about 45 minutes ago, no call about being stuck or in the ditch.

Today’s plan is to drive a convoy of vehicles out to Lolo Hot Springs lodge and fox their plumbing issues: I am not sure what this entails, but I figure I will likely learn.

On the topic of equipment failure: my right front wheel bearing is on the list to be replaced this weekend. It’s making noise. Also, the fuel injectors are next in line.

I had to replace the water pump on my wife's Chrysler 300, my sons truck( Was mine) needs the u-joints replaced and my car needs the exhaust repaired/ replaced and the steering/ suspension repaired? Here is a picture of the 1914 Mauser holster.

Slim

I had hunted for one for my Steyr , but they are rare and costly.
Gun had been Austrian Police issue, Manufactured in 1929.... The back story was it was a bring back , having been required to be  turned over in the American sector when Austria capsulated.

I found one I could make a pattern from , this was the end  result replica holster.

And both on the tablet and phone and nothing else, don't think so Pako. ;D

The phone call to Leo Tanner at 3:30 am the other night was, only 1:30 am his time, didn't wake him though, he got up, saw a call from me at 3:30 am and was afraid of bad news then listened to a message saying I was sorry, no idea how it did it then about 3 minutes of my cussing and trying to hang it up, last thing he heard was well F if you are so good you do it, the a couple damn it's from Rita and click.

Better than the day we were talking, Rita called for help, said I'd call him back not realizing he'd heard "Glen come help me he has a knife."  I went in, told anoth year and some old pup to drop it, picked it up and called him back, he had no idea it was just the dog. ;D

;D With Delmonico, a run-on talker, it's never just "What is he talking' about?", but also "Who", "Where", "Why" and "How"?

I was going to ask if you've checked your blood sugars, or perhaps your meds have/ haven't kicked in.

Was actually multi tasking, no one but me and the dog, got the music up high and sorting pictures, just checked blood sugar, good idea and it's fine.   Looks like Rita gets to be sprung about 7 pm if things go good today.

Need to go make toast, got French Onion soup ready.   No fancy Gurye or what ever cheese, got a choice of Parma or sharp cheddar.   Used Lea and Perrins in it so it has rotten fish as is proper.

OK, squares, not points.

Slim, RCJ and Pony Express, would that be a good base for a lunch at the muster, maybe with a big load of cinnamon rolls or something similar?

I'm afraid that our crowd, due to years of inactivity raising their pinkie when eating High Society foods, - we would have trouble getting it to our mouths.

Besides, a true Nebraskan eats campfire chili with their cinnamon buns.

Well we could do that one and something else with the onion soup.  Thinking make the broth with some roast made into small chunks and leave them in the soup which the high society people don't do but gives us some meat also, a veggie and a cobbler would be great.

Wanting to keep it very good quality food but want to make it a little easier on the cook, doing better everyday but may not be back to full speed by June and sadly may never make it back up to full.  Not that it matters but I think Jerry needs to get me a Handicap Parking sign. ;D   I am going to refuse to give up as long as i can.

That is the spirit

Actually, I make a stew with beef , either a chuck , rump or stew beef and onion soup , add carrots & mushrooms

you can add potato's ( I don't cause I'm off the carbohydrates ) but sweet potato works.
