Disappointing first day with Chiappa Spencer
« on: April 06, 2021, 05:09:20 PM »
Purchased a lightly used Chiappa Spencer in 45 Schofield serial #M0410, I have never fired one and was really looking forward to going to the range with it, today I fired 50 rounds of HSM 200gr RNFP, keeping them within a paper plate at 25yds. freehand was easy and it felt like I was shooting a 22,  all ejected from the rifle with no problem, every third round would feed into the chamber and get stuck half way in after looking at the action I could see that one extractor was in front of the shell base and the other behind it. Also it has a magazine follower which I have never seen on a Chiappa. Any help would be appreciated I really like this gun.

I'm going off memory with this , someone with fresher knowledge will chime in..

I had a 45 Schofield Spencer about 2002 as I recall ( well before the 56/50 45 Colt & 44/40 chambered model's )

It had a double blade extractor, the trick then was to remove the right one, use just the left ...
also there was plug to limit the magazine capacity @ 5 IIRC , I don't recall. I think it would hold 8  :-\ 45 Schofield removed

I also had an original and the two followers were completely different , I never like the silly plastic stick like Chappa OEM follower
when planets align...do the deal !

It might be helpful to explain how to remove the left extractor . . . and maybe use photos, too!  I'd like to add this thread/topic to the SORI Thread.

Ok Two Flints, I removed the breech block and took off the right extractor it just sits
in the track and falls out, then replaced the block with just the left extractor installed. I also found that  briskly working the lever to extract a round works good but to load a new round into the chamber you must work the lever easy and steady, if you briskly work the lever the extractor will lodge itself between the receiver and base of the shell jamming it half way into the breech needing to be knocked out with a cleaning rod. Hope this helps someone experiencing the same problem.

beepo,

I have a earlier model than yours in .44 Russian Cal. SS# 10.
I had the same problem with it as you. One extractor (the one on the right) wanted to hang up on the rim of the case, jamming up the works. I pulled that extractor and gave the thin area just below the extractor a light rap with a pin punch on a flat plate. This caused the extractor a very slight curve towards the cartridge case body. Now the rim of the case will pick up that extractor and move foreword of the rim as the case is chambered. This worked out well for me.
I hope you will find this info helpful?
My best,
