Do you keep a good cheek weld while shooting your rifle? How important is it?

I've recently realized that I do a cheek hover rather than a cheek weld with my rifle.

Also realized that I fall to pieces if I do intentionally make a good cheek weld, so I've gradually gotten subconsciously used to doing a cheek hover.

Watching some of the better shooters in my posse, a few do the hover rather than the weld.

So what say you? Am I being lazy and sloppy and hurting myself by not maintaining a good cheek weld? Or is it a normal technique to lose the cheek weld somewhere along the way while shooting these loads in these rifles?

I'm unsure if I should focus on regaining a weld when I practice.

Only been playing this game for thirty years and almost thirty years military before that.  Never found a "Cheek Weld" to be of any use unless shooting at long range.  Trying to acquire that magical cheek weld and trying to hold it will only serve to slow you down.  The only necessity is to keep the front sight on the target and when engaging multiple targets quickly, keeping both eyes open for quick target acquisition and situational awareness.  Just my opine - YMMV

Since we are shooting fast, the off hand grip on the forend pulling the rifle tight against the shoulder would be more important, as well as a smooth action.

At the ranges we shoot in CAS matches as long as the front sight is "on steel" you will be fine...

Cheek weld or hover... I'm too busy trying to count my shots and pull the trigger the few moments while the front sight passes across a piece of steel.  Sometimes I even catch a glimpse of that elusive rear sight beast!  I'm slow enough that further dividing my attention is counter productive!
