Title: I dropped my 1873 rifle and chipped my stock!!!

Hello,

Been awhile since I've posted here. I love this forum as I find great info here. So I went to shoot my Uberti 1873 rifle and when I got home I grabbed it and it slid out my gun case and the bottom point of the crescent butt plate hit concrete and dented it while chipping a thumbnail sized piece of wood off the stock. I could've cried! Luckily though it wasn't my new Winchester 1873 as the wood is a grade II/III finish. Nevertheless, I'm still upset and can't get my mind off it. So....with the story of how it happened I was able to remove the butt plate and glue the piece of wood that chipped off. It looks better than a piece of wood missing but I can't stand that I have wood glued together on my 1873 rifle stock! Lol. Anyways, I'm not happy with leaving it glued. I've looked at midway USA and vtigunparts and both places are out of stock on the unfinished and finished butt stocks. So the uberti finished with the glossy lacquer and buttplate costs $265 but won't be in until 4-5 weeks. I don't mind the uberti finish but I know some hate the reddish tint and gloss. What does it take to do an unfinished stock yourself on applying a natural oil finish?

I think it looks ok pard. Just keep shooting the heck out of it and after a a while you wont even notice it anymore.

Looks good to me. Call it a battle scar and carry forward with shooting it. Some people actually do this kinda thing on purpose to make the gun looked used.

Sort of like parking lot damage. You always remember that first dent.

That's why God created butt covers. When you drop them with a butt cover, they still break, but you don't see it!

 Get yourself a nice tooled butt cover and forget the damage. I'm sure it's cheaper than a new stock.
