Sir Charles......thanks for the time table for 2008.

Last Easter at the gun show in Calgary, I met a gentleman from Cranbrook, BC who stated that they had just started a cowboy action shooting club in that city (2007) and to come on down.  Unfortunately, I didn't get any more info regarding this at the time.

Have you heard anything regarding this club?

Cheers!

BCLD:  Cranbrook is an interesting place.  It is very near Wildhorse Creek,  the first Kootenay gold rush.  Fisherville was the precurser to Noname City, as the miners burnt it down to follow the gold under the town when all else failed.  There was a real gunfight there in 1862 and vigilanty action followed, until the Magistrate arrived.  A posse of miners followed "One Eared Charlie" to the Bonners Ferry area & filled him full of Buckshot for killing a BC Provincial.  Fort Steele followed later when an Indian was falsely accused of a killing actually perpetrated by the local big rancher.  Sam Steele set up a mountie post but it was abandoned when the indian scare blew over.  Now the remains are an Historic site.

To the point, alll info is welcome but I'll folla up next year.  I'm off to lay a wreath at the grave of J Wes Hardin!

Been to Ft Steele many times, Ol' Sam Steele reminds me of Hank Snow's song "I've been everywhere man"

If you follow Sam's trails, he has just about covered all of the Canadian prairies and most of it looking through a horses ears.  :)

I had an interesting situation regarding an apparent error in Sam Steele's "Forty Years in Canada", when I visited Ft Walsh in 2002. It was regarding the Terry Commission and Sitting Bull at Ft Walsh.

As soon as the Christmas rush is over I'll post it.  With apologies to the Director, John Ford....when the legend becomes fact, print the legend.  In this case it was ...when the legend becomes fact, print the fact.

Merry Christmas

Thanks Sir Charles.  I see that I didn't finish my previous post above.

In Sam Steele's book "My Forty Years in Canada"  He states that the meeting (known as the Terry Commission) between Gen Terry, Comm MacLeod, Sitting Bull et al, was held in the Officer's Mess at Fort Walsh.  Other writers over the years always used Steele's quote in their own works.

So, the last time I was at Fort Walsh, we were in Walsh's residence when the guide stated that this was where the Terry Commission conference took place.

I politely interjected to state that Sam Steele said it took place in the Officer's Mess.  The guide said that was the belief for many years until they recently discovered a primary source document saying it was held in Walsh's residence.

That document was the long lost official minutes of the meeting.

Now, how could Sam Steele be wrong?  Who knows?

I'm a believer that when the legend becomes fact, print the fact.  ;D

Here 's some more info on Frontier Shooting in Victoria

Re: Frontier Shootists Shoots 2009:
We have been able to reserve the second Sunday of the Month for Club shoots/practise, so Jan. 11, Sunday coming will be our inaugural event. We should meet at 8:30 and together set up the stage and then shoot it. Perhaps there will be time for some critique of style or skill. It will be ad hoc for the first attempt. Feb. shoot is the second Sunday so we will shoot the match instead of practice although for some of us there is little difference.

Frontier Shootists Shoots 2009 Dear Cowboy Shooter:
Here is the schedule for 2009.
Malahat Ridge – Sunday, February 8 Rifle Range

Nimrod/Buffalo – Saturday, April 18 Shotgun Range/Clubhouse
                          Sunday, April 19 Shotgun Range

Headquarters 2009 – Saturday, August 29 Shotgun/CH/Rifle Range
                             Sunday, August 30 Rifle Range/Rangehouse

Bunkhouse – Sunday, October 25 Rifle Range/Rangehouse

I have enclosed the poster and registration form for the Malahat Ridge Shoot. We should have the new pistol target stands completed by then.
The Shoot is a week later than usual in the hope the weather will be better. So dust off all the equipment, mark Sunday, Feb. 8 on your calendar, and prepare to have fun at the Malahat Ridge Shoot, Feb. 8, 2009.

NOTE:  The attachments are PDFs that I'm not competant to post here.  On request, I will email them to you, or you can email Chris (cdljones@shaw.ca), or see Al Page at ISLAND OUTFITTERS.

Report on MALAHAT RIDGE

It was a chilly day in February.....!     But, 20 Pards & Pardettes showed up to start the new shooting season.

"Teacher C" ran a good match, but showed an evil streak with the sweeps.  One of the easiest to remember was the "Lawrence Welk"  ( Ah one (On 1), anna two (On 2), anna three (On 3), anna four (On 4)!)  The evilest was indescribable, and required many reviews with the shooters, and even then garnered many procedurals.  First the middle, then inside left, then inside right, and then outer left, and finally outer right!  And then again with the second revolver!

I was shivering, like some others , because I hadn't the sense to remember that while The Malahat is only 38 km away from Victoria, it has a whole different set of weather.  I feared I was going to embarass myself, and I almost did.  Three missfires on Stage 1, due to a faulty revolver.  I had replaced a hand, and probably didn't get it fitted right.  Luckily I had my old REGULATOR as a spare.  Only two more misses, actually I didn't shoot 'cause I lost track on another complicated sweep, for the match, but THREE PROCEDURALS!  Even at that I stood 7th overall, and first of two in Frontier Cartridge.

Top Gun was "Neut Reno", followed by "Kid Carson" and "Prairie Buck".  "Miss Beadazzled" was 5th, and top Lady.

"The Grey Fox" was, as always, the show stopper.  He distributed copies of the procedures for using WILD BUNCH firearms for regular SASS matches.  He came kitted out, and competed as WB category, even though he was placed in Frontier Duelist.  I for one, was impressed enough to review my own inventory, and realized that I already have most of the required gear.  Not sure I'm ready to change my alias to Lee Marvin, yet!

The best part of the match was the appearance of several new shooters.  Each one had a mentor with him, and each was made welcome to our sport & hobby.

I didn't make this shoot but "Teacher C" sent the following report.  It came to me with pictures, but I couldn't make them pop up!  If anyone knows the trick, let me know.

What I think is neat is the response to the newspaper invitation for folks to come out and try it out for themselves.  It looks like we actually have some new shooters!

Frontier Shootists’ Nimrod/Buffalo 2009 was a great success this year. At Saturday’s Nimrod, over 35 visitors registered to join western shooters in learning about and trying out our sport. Several young people were on hand to shoot rifles, pistols, and shotguns. This event was announced in the Times-Colonist, Thursday, April 16, which really helped swell our numbers. Everyone who attended expressed their joy and appreciation at the opportunity to see what Cowboy Action shooting is all about.

Six members demonstrated a standard 3-gun stage to the applause of the audience who saw our competition first hand. Several expressed interest in joining us and several memberships were sold that day.
Here “Prairie Buck” is explaining proper pistol technique to Matt and Rebecca Reynolds.

One stage had shooters load a single round and engage a buffalo target. Then they had to load each round singly and hit buffalo targets progressively further away. Buffalo paper targets with bulleye scoring determined the top precision shooter. “Neut Reno” took the win for that category.
Two new shooters told me they “had such a good time,” and wanted to know when was the practice day.
For all of you, Practice day is MAY 10, Sunday,
rifle range 9-noon. All are welcome.   Sunday’s Buffalo Shoot was shot under mostly sunny skies. No rain the whole weekend !
Eighteen shooters competed in the five stage shoot with “Haweater Al” taking top honors.
Other winners are listed below.
Because the focus was on buffalo hunting, rifles were used everywhere.

Dave Morris, Terry Bowyer, Tom Keiffer, Robie Petrie, Sybil Kangas’ head enjoy reliving the event.

Ladies Traditonal- Victoria Diamond
Senior          -    Neut Reno
Elder Statsman  -   Jinglebob                  “Everyone had a fun time.”
Ladies Senior    -    Miss Mary Spencer
Duelist       -    Wagon Master

I didn't make it myself, but I heard it was a great success.  With a limit of 50 competitors, they actually acquired 60! The best turnout ever.  here is Grey Fox's report;

Carl:
Greetings from Liberty Ranch.

Lady Shootist Victoria Diamond wins Top Gun!  First woman shootist to garner the honour at Headquarters. The Victoria Frontier Shootists of the Victoria Fish & Game hosted  Headquarters 20th Annual September 3rd & 4th 2011. A vibrant and action packed weekend highlighted by Tex and Cat Ballou representing the Single Action Shooting Society based in New Mexico. Tex presented the shooting competition certificates and awards. Multiple participants have been quoted "the best ever". Headquarters was a 10 stage Cowboy Action Main Match Saturday all day and Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon, Cornelius O'Keefe from Germany conducted the mid range and Scheutzen Rifle Competition. The Scheutzen was won by 15 year old Six Gun Simon. Headquarters is the oldest SASS affiliated match in Canada. The event was topped off by a steak bar-b-que on Saturday and a Gala catered dinner on Sunday evening. Headquarters marked 30 years of Cowboy Action Shooting, 25 years of Cowboy Action Shooting in Western Canada and 20 years of Headquarters as an event.

Best regards,
Grey Fox

Hedley Lamar & Lou Graham provided the inspiration.   We would love to see a strong contingent show up to assist Captain Pickett.  There will be a German representative there to resolve any disputes!  Courtney is about a two hour drive to the North of Victoria, and there are plenty of sights to fill the dead spots between the two events.

Pig War, you say .... I've been reenacting the Pig War at San Juan Island National Historic Park for years. Can't remember ever seeing a single action revolver or lever action rifle ..... lots of Enfield MLs and other period guns.

Our home club has decreed that anyone shooting from the leather indoors needs take a basic course before being allowed to. This for insurance reasons, we're told. It is mainly aimed at the SA auto types, but would apply if you wished to shoot a revolver indoors from the leather. The requirement does not apply to the outdoor ranges ... duh ..... ;>)

It has always bothered me that unlike IPSC, CAS has never had a holster qualification course requirement. People can just show up and shoot. We have a couple of people that are downright scary gun handlers at times! It's a trial for ROs who cannot presume that these folks won't do something unsafe.

I am proposing that henceforth, we extend the rule to the outdoor ranges, and EVERYONE who intends to shoot from the leather on club property will be required to take the training. We require eye and ear protection as mandatory, so why stop there? The moment there is an incident, a Coroner's inquest will ask the question - "Why only on the indoor range?" So will the insurance company.

This will put some noses out of joint, as it is next to impossible to tell a male past puberty anything about gun handling. The older the person, the more resistance. He's seen the movies and knows all about it .....

Interesting proposal I'll watch to see how it plays.
The 'holster' course you speak of , is there anywhere a person could view the requirements and or course content.
To keep on topic , my reason to ask is in view of pending trips west in which I would like to steal away for some shooting.
Appreciate any responses.

It won't be a Cowboy version of the IPSC Black Badge course, but it will cover:

- straight finger draw & reholstering
- cross draw technique
- trigger and site acquisition on the way up
- maintaining safe muzzle direction
- movement

Course requirements will be an open mind, the willingness to learn and the 'spirit of the game' to follow instructions on the range.
I think you probably qualify.

This is just my pipe dream at the moment. I can't make the motion until the next club meeting and I need some feed back from the CAS section.

What was the safety concern issue? Was it the old "you guys shooting from the leather are bad ..." ? Maybe we can learn something here.
When push comes to shove, the safety aspect always prevails. The adage " ... if it saves even one life ...." is hard to refute.
That makes a good case for holsters on a range, as it prevents unauthorized tampering.

At a club in the interior of BC an IPSC shooter got so annoyed at the casual gun handling of visiting trap shooters that he sat on the clubhouse steps with his 1911 in his hands - slide forward on an empty chamber, no mag. The trap boys were also indulging in hot toddies between rounds as was the custom.
Push came to shove and the matter went to a special meeting. It was decided that the trap shooters HAD to clean up their act with regard to gun handling and NO drinking was allowed until the last shot was fired. It put some noses severally out of joint, but who care?

SKIRT!!!  I'd think you were a Sassenach if I didn't know better. It was a joy to wear my registered family Tartan. Next year I'll shoot in my Fenian mercenary/Irish Brigade outfit - if it doesn't rain.

Goodtameetcha at the Gulch! And all the guys I started with 20+ years ago. With the number of 'absent friends' we heard about, it's good we had a reunion now. We're spread all over the Colony these days and only see each other at events.

Thanks for the great photo coverage of the shoot. I learn a lot from the pics of shooters in action and I'm glad to see that I practice what I preach when it comes to shooting style. You got me shooting 'double duellist' several times; first time I ever tried it. I may stick with 'Frontiersman' for the rest of the season.

'Miss Cara Boo Belle' just reminded me that your pics did not include the one of the costume prize winners.

Skirt, indeed!   >:(

When PJ and I finally get the opportunity to meet in person, we are likely to be attired in similar ancestral/historical fashion .....

PJ may not be a big lad, but I know he is 'verra feisty' indeed .....  whereas I stand a full 28 hands tall, weigh in at 20 stone, am rather bad-tempered and prefer to go fully armed .... so, if present on the occasion of PJ and I meeting, you may wish to avoid envious Sassenach references to the fealeadh beg as a skirt .....   ;)

Och! .... a big guy picking on my wee pal, is it?   >:(

But "oops" ..... guess I made a 'slight' calculation error ..... (four goes into twelve only three times, eh?) :-[   That shoulda been 19 hands .....   :-\

(Mind you, I fibbed about the weight a wee bit ....  ;) .... actually over 21 stone at present,  but I aim to chisel off some pebbles, with 20 stone as my immediate goal ....)

Let me see ... TWO Scots in kilts at the same shoot - we'd have them outnumbered! Actually, Grant has our personalities pretty well summed up. I've been referred to as a 'pit bull' when riled and it's the size of the fight in the dog that counts, not t'other way round.
Big guys find it somewhat disconcerting to have me gnawing at their ankles .....

It would have been great to have you sat the event, Grant! I remember the shoot pictured in the video we all received in our shooter's package and was surprised to learn how may 'absent friends' have crossed the Great Divide. Some that were there looked a might tired as well and others were reported as ailing.

Those were the days of one gun, usually in a calibre starting with the number '4' and loads were at the defensive level. I was pleased to see some still shooting 'real' loads - smokeless as well as BP. I missed a couple of events at Palmer's Gulch, one due to cancer treatment and t'other in recovery. The one before that, I was involved in a cross border dispute called the 'Pig War'.

We won't discuss that .....

I'm sorry I missed it but had out of town visitors.  Haweater Hal said they had 67 shooters, a record!  There were a bunch from below the medicine line as well.  That is a trend I hope continues as well as our shooters drifting South.  I'm glad to hear that Form 6NIA's will be a bit easier for us to obtain now.

I'd like to hear if our American Pards had any difficulty with Canadian red tape?

Sir Charles:  with the help of the Quesnel posse, Prince George has formed her own posse - The Chilako Vigilance Committee.  We hosted our first annual event last summer and all who attended declare it a success.  So we are hosting an annual CAS event on June 20 and 21, 2015.  We'll make all attendees welcome.  I'll post more information for interested folks, as time draws nearer.

A couple of years ago, we had a young fellow join the Rod and Gun Club, and at a meeting, expressed an interest in creating a CAS section.  Naturally, it was approved, and Eddie Blackwater never looked back.  So we have irregular meetings, and have a nice small core of folks e3xcited about being involved.  We practice all summer long every Thrusday evening from 6 pm til dark.  We made 52 targets and their supporting frames as well as a bunch of shotgun poppers and clay launchers...we're off and running.

Hey Gabe

We're lookin' to comin' to yer shoot agin this year. Our numbers have dwindled to the point we are lookin' at not havin' our annual event.
Last year it was Chicken Marengo, Miz Josie and moi who shot regularly. A few more came out of the wood work to help set up the match, but we aren't sure we'll see 'em this year.

Only thing I hates more'n Aliens is Dragons. An Alien Dragon would be a died-and-gone-to-heaven situation.

My eyes should be goof to go by the time of your shoot. I'm slated for the first of two cataract operations at the end of the month. That will give me back my long range eyes and l'll likely only have to wear glasses for reading, if that.
