Membership Certificates
« on: June 22, 2009, 08:25:02 PM »
Has there been any thought given to issuing membership certificates in leu of the welcome letter that one of our fella's has started mailing out to new recruits? I think a simple way of doing this would be to have a template on our main website where members can log in and fill in the appropriate information, such as member # and alias and print them out.  The details of how the certificate should look can be hashed out by the officers  ;D

Good Idea, Hunter. SASS and SBSS do have such a certificate. I think there is someone who can make one.

I believe when the GAF was first formed a certificate was emailed to new recruits.

If some talented individuals to design one we could probably utilize it. We need Bvt Gen US Scout approval on something like this before implementing it.

Good idea, but I'll let someone else come up with some templates, etc.

Send them to Bull - and he can send me those he thinks would work.

The welcome letter will continue though.  It helps explain the GAF a bit - the website, The Barracks, the Grand Muster, etc.

I do want to chime in on this....I like the idea of a certificate for those persons that like that sort of thing but I also agree that the welcome letter contains important information that is useful to the new recruit. Dalton, I do not know why you do not recall getting one but I became a member after you did so I cannot determine whether one was sent to you or not. What I can do is send you one now, if you would like one. Just let me know and I will send it your way, make sure your correct email address is included in the request.

Thanks,

Folks,

I checked on my hard drive and found 4 PowerPoint files I had built that have macros in them to make mailable certificates. Who should I email them too? I can assist in modifying them via that new-fangled voice telegraph machine invented by Alexander Graham Bell...

Captain Barrett,

Are they generic or are they specifically for the GAF?

I'd be glad to take alook at the macros.

Captain Barrett: I think the best way to do this is by getting some feedback from other members as to what they feel would be an appropriate representation of our organization. Something else to consider as well, many certificates of the mid to late 1800's were not landscape, they were portrait in arrangement. Are we after authenticity in this regard as well?  My personal liking would include a wreath/vine type border with opposing flags which have the letters GAF, or the entire words typed out in its center. I'm not certain what the wording on the certificate should be. Perhaps portions of the GAF mission statement along with the obvious spaces/lines to type name/alias, member #, date of issue, signature of the commander and all other relevent information.

I wish I had more knowledge in this regard, I'm just not that computer literate. I have a lot of ideas, but getting them on paper for me would be very difficult. If any of you can steer me in the right direction as far as software and finding and importing graphics I would be glad to submit a prototype membership certificate.

Hello All!  :)

Sorry for the absence on my part, Col. Schmitt, I'll email you a sample of a Certificate I typed up awhile back for GAF if you'd like.

I wonder if the folks at Kinko's could help us out? My computer just isn't set up for desiging graphics, if it was, I'd be glad to make a few templates . It must be quite a job because this topic has gone cold for quite a spell now. I thought of using an original certificate of merit as a good place to start, then I found out that very few have survived and finding a picture of one is nearly impossible. I've searched the web over and have found nothing. Considering the fact that awards and certificates were rare during the era we represent, perhaps a membership certificate is inappropriate anyway?

I was looking at my great grandfather's civil war discharge papers and checked on the web and found blank discharge and listment forms for sale from Sullivan Press. Maybe a take off on the civil war enlistment form would work.

www.sullivanpress.com

Papers of the Union Soldier (CWP101) - This kit contains 5 of the forms you will need to authentically portray a Union soldier. Enlistment and Discharge to get you into and out of the army, a Furlough to get you home, a Pass so you can leave camp, and a Draft Notice if you don't want to enlist! $2.95, includes:

Enlistment Form
Discharge Form
Pass
Draft Notice
Furlough

That web site got me to thinking (that's dangerous). I think I have a copy of my great grandfather's enlistment papers. If I do I will scan them and see if a modified version can be developed for the GAF. The ones on that web site look great but appear to designed for US troops only.
