New Sharps
« on: June 17, 2018, 12:19:00 PM »
My much anticipated new rifle has arrived from Shiloh, and I am not disappointed.  It's a Sporting rifle #1 with extra fancy wood, AAA finish, CCH steel furniture, cheek piece with accent line, ebony schnable forend tip, classic chequering, steel chequered butt plate, heavy barrel in 45-70.  I had MVA sights installed.  It is yet unfired, but I'll remedy that in early July...still recovering from eye surgery.  I'll try to post a few pics of it here...

Thanks!  I had them install their sling swivels ... the rifle weighs 11 3/4 pounds (unloaded) and I intend to hunt with it.

Don't buy this "I just had eye surgery ..." bit.

Just shot in a CAS match with him earlier this month. He shot "Frontiersman" with his beautiful ivory stocked '51 Navy's and outshot a lot of them ca'tridge guns in the process.

I wondered why he had Shiloh do the pretty stuff when his own work is just as good, if not better. Answer - "It freed up time for me to work on other people's rifles."

Looking forward to some coaching on his club's 1,000 yd range this summer, shooting my Plain Jane #1 Sporter. I'm going to have to order a longer sight staff.

I've had a couple of outings with my new rifle, and I'm very pleased already with the results.
So far, I'm just working up loads at 100 meters, but have shot several 1 1/2" five shot groups with a couple of loads.  I'm shooting a BACo 443530E bullet paper patched to .449" over 80 gr. of Swiss 1 1/2 Fg.  I've been cleaning between shots, but now want a load I can shoot continuously without cleaning, so there's work to be done.

The only was you're going to get a paper patch load that will shoot with some accuracy without wiping between shots is going with a dual diameter patched bullet. Check out Brooks Sharps style dual diameter. I'ld suggest one with a .448 base, and 442 at the base of the nose, length about 1.35 and cast it from 16-1. Use a lubed felt wad under the bullet and wipe the exposed portion of the patch with jojoba oil.

Cleaning between shots is a PITA. I clean after 5 rds and get acceptable groups and minute of steel target accuracy with grease groove bullets.

PJ:  I intend to have this rifle shooting to the sights by the end of the month and the "Run Amok"...if it takes cleaning between shots, so be it.  I won't have time to test both pp bullets and greasers.

Gonna be great seeing you touch off that new rifle!

I was at the range t'other day with my Business Rifle and my #1 Sporter. There was a guy there with his 8-9 year old son who could plink 12 ga shotshells off the rail at 25 yds like child's play (pun intended).

His dad was fascinated by the Sharps rifles and I asked if he'd like to shoot one. He opted for the heavy BR as he was concerned about recoil.
He was set up at the bench with his classy long range rifle, so I put the BR on his rest and instructed him on the DSTs. He liked the x-hair front sight.

I told him to hold centre at 200m - "Bang! Clang!". I gave him another rd and he did it again, hitting 4" from his 1st shot, both of them well centred. He was surprised at the lack of recoil compared to his rifle.

His son was very proud of his Dad for shooting a "real Buffalo Rifle"! I may have made a convert, but I told him I did him no favour as he would never look at his precision rifle the same way again and that BP smoke was addictive.

I've been shooting my new rifle all summer, and have had the good fortune to win two of the four long range matches I entered.  To date, my most accurate loads have consisted of 85 gr. Swiss 1 1/2 Fg and a paper patched BACo 443530E bullet patched to bore size.  I have one 200 m target with five shots less than 1 moa but it is an anomaly, so far.
I've been working with some grease groove bullets at around 500 gr. and am surprised and pleased with the results, and for fast shooting without cleaning between shots, they are definitely the answer.
But the icing on the cake  was an opportunity to harvest a bison on November 11th this fall.  I used the Lyman 457125 bullet in 16:1 lead/tin @ 1350 fps.  I'll try to post a picture of the occasion.

Them good ole days, past and gone
Time and the world and change goes on
And you can't do things like you used to do
When buffalo was plenty ,and folks ,was few.

  Thank you for sharing
