Circa 1875 in northern Michigan hunting out of "Camp Erwin"
From the book: Legendary Deer Camps

"Most hunters that hung out at deer camp Erwin used the Model 1873 Winchester in .44 W.C.F. (44-40)......"

I wonder how many of these deer were harvested with the 1873 Winchester?
I'll bet 80+%.

What is your pet load that you plan on hunting with . Will you be shooting black or smokeless ? And what caliber is your 1873 ?

Rowdy Fulcher,

I like stepping back in time so I plan on using 40 grs of SWISS FFG with a 200 gr. cast bullet in original W.R.A. CO. 44 W.C.F. cases (see avatar)..... similar to the ammunition that John Irwin used in his '73.....back in the 1870's...... ;D

I know what you mean . I am going to our Hunting Cabin tomorrow and camp for the night and yes I will take my 73 and my USFA prewar . I love shooting both . The 44wcf is a excellent round in rifle or pistol . And I will have a GOOD time setting around the campfire thinking about that BIG Buck we all want to get . Will work in a little plinking session over the weekend . Will finish off the last batch of jerky over the weekend .

Got a chance to slip away to the cabin and shoot . I shot at 110 yards to see how much drop my bullet would have . I was impressed to see hope the bullet had enough energy to make small dimples in the soft steel target . I shot at 50 yards and it was smacking steel with authority . I was a little concerned about using the 44wcf but after this weekend I feel it will do an Excellent job in it's Range .

Rowdy I'll be using two rifles this season. One is the '76 I reworked and turned and shortened the BBL in 45/75, and the other back-up is my '86 Browning in 45/70 (that one will digest some hotter loads) Hopefully I'll be able to post some nice buck pics, as we've been seeing some nice ones during bow hunting this year. Good luck during your hunt!

This year I have been using my 1873 . During Muzzle loader season I had a Big Bobcat at about 20 yards , but we have a season and it wasn't in then . Now we can take a Bobcat so I am waiting for him to come back . I was bored the other day while sitting in my stand so when a coyote came through at a fast pace I had to give him a try . And ole Willey Coyote was fast enough to not get hit .

We had little luck this season, but i managed to get this spike buck opening day with the modified '76 in 45/75. About 60 yards away, and walking slowly and carefully. I consider myself fortunate  ;) May try the T-zone hunt on the 8th - 10th, but it's doe only that weekend. Didn't stick around for the ML hunt as we saw very few deer for the 9 day gun season.

Congrats on the coyote Rowdy!

Not making any jerky this year. Grinding everything into hamburger and seasoning it "Italian" style for chili, burgers, and spaghetti. Back steaks of course are separate for grilling and frying. Not much left of the shoulders for use.

I really enjoy the 45/75 as it is modified, but I'm leaning on using the '73 in 44/40 next time, or the 45/60 '76. Gotta spread the wealth around you know!  ;D My only fear is seeing a 10 pointer 250 yards off and no scoped rifle for these old eyes (chuckle).

Continued success to all you folks still hunting!

Are you going to shoot black or smokeless next year in your 73 ? I plan on working on a black powder load if the Black Dawge doesn't work out . I really enjoy working with the 1873 in 44wcf .The new short rifle needs a .429 dia bullet my old half round shoots .427 imagine that ? Why can't they all take the same bullet ?  ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Rowdy,
They can if one prepares b.p. ammunition like it was manufactured back when Winchester was making '73's.
In other words, a soft lead bullet of .426 - .427" diameter over a quality black powder.

Prior to the mid 1890's when smokeless powder and metal patched (jacketed) bullets made their appearance bore / groove dimensions varied widely according to George Madis, who wrote the Winchester Book (my '73 made in 1882 has a .433" groove diameter. I have heard of some being as large as .435".).  George told me that Winchester knew that their b.p. ammunition would shoot accurately in barrels of varying diameter so didn't correct the situation.

That changed in the mid 1890's because smokeless powdered ammunition did not shoot so well in larger barrels.

Today, handloaded replications of early Winchester b.p. ammunition shoots well in my rifle's oversized bore. Black powder bumps up the undersized .427" diameter soft lead bullet to fill the bore just like the original ammunition did 100+ years ago......

I Took my gun for a walk a few times this year but didn't see anything legal. The magazine contained black powder ammunition assembled to replicate that vintage ammunition of yesteryear.

I'm going to have to look back at my notes when I get time. I was shooting smokeless and Pyrodex RS mostly, with some T7 loads thrown in just for comparison . IIRC, the smokeless were giving the best accuracy for my gun, but I didn't play with the loads much, as I was concentrating on the 45/60 and 45/75 at that time. I'm sure I'll have something worked up this summer. I really like the '66 better than the '73, but both are 44/40, so one load might work for both. Time will tell........

Today is smoking Hot   . Decided to start planning on the upcoming Hunting season . We try to always have a Deer camp which is a lot of Fun . Between the hunting ,the eating ,and the camping , well that's  as good as life gets . The camp cook is always looking for new recipes for his Dutch oven . And he always delivers excellent food . I will use my half octagon rifle it shoots the best group for me . And will carry my 5 1/2 USFA in 44wcf for back up or actually if I get one up close I enjoy using my pistol .

Today has been a Hot one . Went shooting earlier and that was Hot . Tried the Reloader 7 and it was ok . I prefer the smokey loads .   The Swiss is my favorite , and if for some reason I run out of those will work with the T7 . I loaded up a few rounds with T7 today , plan on shooting tomorrow . If I can get it to shoot 20 rounds consistently that is the plan .

Today was a rainy cooler day , really makes you think about Hunting season . I hope my ammo is on the next UPS truck . I plan on shooting ammo loaded with Swiss . But if for some strange reason that doesn't happen I have a back up plan . I can legally take 4 Deer with my 1873 . So naturally I want to take them with Black Powder Ammo . And yes I have been practicing shooting off hand .
Rule of thumb ,What ever direction you anticipate the Deer to come from they will probably come from the other . So it's a good idea to practice shooting from your weak side also .

Rowdy, I casted up over 300 bullets for my old '73 today. Now to get them loaded up and out to the range on a weekly basis until hunting season. I used to hunt Snowshoe Hares every day in the winter time. I eventually got used to all sorts of contortions to get the shot. Trouble is now the ol' neck doesn't twist around 360 degrees anymore.

Got a chance to check on my Deer stands . They are still there , will move one to another area on Farm . The drought has been tough on the mass crop . The swamp is all dried up , never thought it would look like that . At least the skitters aren't to bad . Might try to slip in there and call a coyote up . We camped the other night and those ole song dogs were making all kinds of noise .
It sounded like there was 50+ coyotes but when it gets daylight they disappear . The next day all you can find is tracks and crap .

If you can imitate a wounded rabbit, they'll come a-runnin'. There's too many of them around here. They are decimating the fawns.

Ole Wiley Coyote is about as smart of a critter as you can hunt . If you can get them into range the 44wcf is a different way to hunt . Last Deer season I was hunting and a Coyote came slipping through the woods ,the old 44wcf laid him to rest . Sure do wish I had got a picture of him .

I know that feeling , I have been working with my 1873's and  plan  on SLAUGHTERING the Deer at the farm . I have a new Short Rifle and it needs a .429 bullet . My old faithful uses a . 427 and what I don't understand  , they are both Uberti's . I plan on filling my tags this year , I like jerky and the sausage sticks . And how could you not like the Tenderloin or Steaks .

Got out there yesterday and tried the .429 , .430 with Swiss BP . The short rifle shot  much better .  There was one group at 50 yards I could cover with a quarter . But what really amazes me is the cleanliness of Swiss powder . When you can shot 30 rounds and look down the barrel and still see all your rifling .

Got a chance to shoot the different powder charges and different bullet dia . The .430 did ok but overall the 429 looks to be my choice as best performing . Testing is still going on but close to finished . Having a Premium ammo is what the Vintage Hunter needs . Just because a Hunter decides to use black he shouldn't be at a hunting disadvantage .Now that Swiss has the standard to go by , maybe the rest of the Powder Companies will follow suit with clean burning powder that can achieve the Velocities as the Original Winchester loads ?

Rifle season  is only weeks away . I plan on taking 3 Deer this year . That way I will have plenty of jerky meat . And several Steaks for the year . I plan on using my 73 and maybe my 76 . I have killed Deer with my 76 , but this will be the year for my 73 in 44wcf
a few years ago I used my 66 carbine in 45 colt to harvest a nice Doe . The 45 colt did a good job ,but it's time for the 44wcf to step up . The nice thing about being a Cowboy Shooter and a Vintage Hunter is they cross over . You own the Guns ,clothes and ammo . Now to put them all together and have a safe Hunt . Life is one big Adventure enjoy them one day at a time .

I had been planning on using my original '73 44 WCF for deer hunting next month, but due to the conditions I'll be hunting in, I'm thinking of taking my original Winchester 1895 38-72 instead. Next year, I'll be hunting at a different location where the risk to my pretty high condition '73 is not so great. I feel kind of bad about this because I am all in a lather to harvest a Whitetail Deer with my old 44.

Good luck on your hunt , hope you can keep those toes and fingers warm . The weather has cooled down so will be headed out tonight or in the morning ? Have been thinking about where the Does are ?The plan is to take a nice 90 pound doe , excellent meat between the Buck and a Doe that should hold me the year . Now this Spring I would like a Hog and a couple Turkeys but that's another season .

Rifle season for Deer is over . So will try my hand at Coyote Hunting after Muzzle loader season . I have 2 73 rifles both are 44wcf ,but I recently installed a scope on the short rifle . Wonder what the chances of taking a coyote with a 73 at 300 yards ???

You might need a couple ranging shots at 300 yards. I've shot my 73 at 200 yards and you could certainly nail a Coyote at that range.

The scope is a 3 power . I got it from Powder Inc. After Muzzle Loader season I plan on working with it . I have shot it about 20 rounds ,but they were smokeless . Wanted to see how the scope worked before I used  my BP ammo . The short rifle with the 17 inch scope is pretty awesome looking .

Watched a video on how to skin a rattler . Looks pretty easy . I  was hoping after I win the Lotto we could go on that big Hunt . And if we start down in Texas I would need to know how to clean a rattler . I figured we would get tired of Mt. Lion and rice .

Don't know about rattlers but Coyotes are smelly critters . Years ago I killed a coyote with a pistol ( Ruger Vaquero in 45 colt ) I was real proud of that kill . I was working third shift at the time so I stuck it in a trash bag then threw it in the Bronco on my way to work . The next morning after work I opened the door to my Bronco What a stink . I drove as fast as I could to deliver that stinky thing .

Rowdy,
I hear ya. The few coyotes I've skinned were okay smelling, but I'm sure if they were left in an enclosed place overnight they would be kinda smelly. Hope the stink didn't last too long in your Bronco.
I was planning to cook the snakes I skinned, but backed out of it after I smelled them. They say (whoever they is) that snakes can be very tasty. I would hope the smell would leave them upon cooking, I just couldn't bring myself to try.

It is snowing here as well. We have about 15 cm since the mornig. I made an artificial blood trail in the morning for my dog to practice, and when I took her out in the afternoon to do the practice, the trail was already covered with 10 cm of snow. It was beautiful to see how she was digging out the blood drops weith her nose. Made me feel bad I left my 1873 at home. :)

Rowdy,
About 2 weeks ago when it warmed up into the low 40's for a day or so, I took some black powder handloads to the range for testing.   Bullets were 427098 and 43-215C and made from pure lead, 99/1 and 50/1 alloys.  I was trying to find out what the accuracy would be in my original '73's oversized bore (.435" average) with standard sized bullets (.427 & .429).  All shot pretty well at 25 yards.  ;D

On the next decent day, i will test at 50 and 100 yards to see if the accuracy still holds well......

Rowdy,
I was finally able to go to the range on Tuesday. The weather was very nice for a change with temps in the 60's. Nary a cloud in sight. ;D

I was testing some factory 44-40 cartridges for accuracy and velocity (Magtech 225 gr and Winchester 200 gr jacketed) and will be adding the results to the original tests with the other factory cartridges evaluated late last year.   Both shot very well.

In addition, I tested some vintage .44-40 smokeless rounds containing DuPont No. 2 & Hazard No. 2 bulk smokeless and they were steady in their performance, turning in excellent groups and good velocities. Too bad that nothing like them is available today.

Finally, I tested some 240 gr. bullets with Swiss b.p. (Lyman 429667) and they shot / grouped well.

All in all....a very fuunnn day!

Being a GOOD American today I went to shoot my 73 rifle . That's my fire works . I sat my chronograph up and tried a few loads over it . I shot a load of Triple 7 over it and they were what I call good velocities . They averaged 1320 fps , now to put them on paper and see what happens . I also tried a load using h4227 and not to bad they averaged 1250 fps . I tried a few loads with Trail Boss and they were at 1000 fps , fun to plink with but not a hunting round . Now is the perfect time to work with your weapon , be ready for opening day of season . Remember one shot one kill .

It only took one shot, the hog was about 140 lb. and standing broadside feeding. Bullet entered in the shoulder ,knocked him down, passed through, he recovered ran about 15yd. nose plowed into the dirt Mighty DEAD . Out of your 73 that type load should Knock em silly. Well I am still learning here so no short A1 answer, but I have one that I know is good to go and another I wish to test out this fall.  The one I plan on using this fall is 35.2 gr by weight of Swiss ffg, compressed and a 200 gr. bullet. (44-40) About 1295fps.  The 1973 SRC I am loading for has been a far easier project vs. the Marlin 1984 44-40 I was working with last summer.   I enjoy hunting with the vintage firearms.    Good luck on your hunt and hope to see some photos of a harvest.

Thanks for the welcome Rowdy.   For years I was using a 1894 Winchester SRC in .32ws from 1927,  then two years ago started using a Marlin 1894 in 44-40 made in 1895.   I have a great time hunting with the vintage firearms, last year other hunters (who had spent range time with me)  said they knew it was me that shot from the sound of the report from my 44-40.  (connected with a nice six point buck)  It makes you feel good when you hear things like that from other hunters.   I plan to change things up slightly this fall vs. last fall.  One change is using Swiss instead of A2400 and the other will be to let the 1873 Winchester get out for a week in the woods during Whitetail season.  The season is fast approaching and I am looking forward to it.  I like taking photos also, so like I always do I will take lots of pictures. I have just recently joined this sight, but had been reading information on the 1873 Winchesters here and liked what I was reading.  It is nice to have the resource like this and the extra reading material.

Take care, D-Hansen

Rowdy,  I'm in Minnesota, been here my whole life 50 years.  I hunt in different area over the years,  most of my hunting is North East Minnesota, along the Minnesota Wisconsin border.  About and hour south of Duluth Mn.    Hunting here is good.  Harvest numbers are about half of what Wisconsin does.  I've taken a deer each of the last two years and I also small game hunt.  The area I deer hunt has some large Black Bear, I have come across them while in deer stand or out hunting.  But I have yet to try Bear Hunting.  I did bear hunt when younger 14 and 15.  The area along the St. Croix river, North of the St Croix State park there are 400 to 600 pound black bears taken.  I'm not an expert, but just like being in the woods and enjoy the outdoors.  I have been bitten by the 44-40 bug and its got a good hold on me.  Most of my friends hunt with .243, 7mm, .300 mag, you get the idea.  But I have yet to track a whitetail that I have shot.  I have had to help others track, but the 44-40 does a fine job on deer.

I enjoy the ole school weapons . The 44wcf in a 73 Winchester is as GOOD as it gets . I also have a 1876 in a 45-60 it's a shooter but it's heavy . I killed a nice buck with it a few years ago . But I haven't taken a Deer with my 73 . Last year I used my Muzzle Loader to harvest a buck . I wish you could use a 1873 using black powder ammo in muzzle loading season . Maybe some day ?
Good luck to you on this upcoming Hunting season be safe , have fun and hunt every day , life is short .

Rowdy,  I shot three different loads today from the 73 Winchester in 44-40.  1st was 15.2 gr. of A2400 with a 200 gr. rnfp at .430" diameter these were at 1000 fps.  2nd was 33.6gr of Goex and that was 1250fps, (I had to clean after ten rounds)  3rd was 35.2gr of Swiss at 1290fps and very low SD.  I have been pan lubing, but want to buy a luber/sizer.  Been think about the Lyman 4500 model with heater.  Have fun and hope to see some photos of your hunting camp and harvest.

It's a little more money, but you'll be thankful in the long run if you buy a Star Lurbisizer from Magma Engineering.  The straight through design is much, much faster and easier to use.  I started out with a Lyman and kicked myself in the posterior for not getting a Star sooner.

Blackpowder Burn,  Thank you for the advise.   I will look into a Star Lubersizer.   I have not had the need to size yet.  My 1894 Marlin is very large groove diameter.   An I have not purchased a mould for the 1873 yet.  Plan on ordering a Accurate Mould from Tom.   It will be a 430215c or the one that 30wcf recommends as being close to the Winchester original design (I have the number written down).

If you can afford it, you'll also appreciate the pneumatic cylinder to provide automatic lube feed.  It requires a small air compressor, but is another item that really speeds up sizing and lubing.

So many toys...............so little money!  ;D

If you go with the Lyman, you shouldn't need a heater if you stick with using BP type lubes, that's mainly needed for the newer hard smokeless lubes.

That is sad information for the person who wants to buy loaded B.P. ammunition.  But I can understand their position.  44-40 is not as common as 45colt or 44mag.  Then on top of that someone wanting 44-40 in B.P. is even less.  I am glad I can still buy Swiss and Goex, and can find Winchester large pistol primers so I can put together what I need.   I think the writing is on the wall.   There are less hunters every year.  In the 1980's in Minnesota we had 480,000 upland bird hunters in the fields.  Last year was under 80,000 hunters for upland bird.  The numbers are not there.  As hunters drop in numbers, so will revenue for these companies.  Shooting sports like sporting clays, cas and sass have all help give shooting sports a shot in the arm so to speak.  But more needs to be done to get younger people involved in maintaining the shooting ranges, educating shooters and non-shooters.  It is hard to expect these companies to produce products that are not making them a profit.  Things can change, but it takes putting forward a good image to the non-shooting crowd.  And us shooters supporting the companies the manufacture the supplies we use for our sport, whether that is hunting or target.  I know I enjoy hunting and I like vintage firearms, but just how may hunters are looking to buy B.P. loaded hunting ammunition and how many rounds a year would one hunter buy?

It is very unfortunate that their son was injured in a reloading accident that he is still recovering from. Understandably, that was a good reason to dispense with the ammunition portion of their product line.

Thankfully, there are presently two other sources for 44-40 b.p.  ammo....

Today I drove to my shooting spot . I fired a few rounds through my 45 colt pistol  then I got my 73 out . I had ammo loaded with unique and some loaded with T7 . The unique was a load that will work for hunting season if I need a smokeless round . The T7 will work if I run out of Black Powder . The T7 load has a good thump to it when you squeeze the trigger . Who's ready for Deer season ???

I'll be using my original 1873 44-40 (made in 1887) for deer hunting this fall. The season is not until the 2nd week in November. I've settled on a load and will be practicing offhand shooting between now and then. Hope to be able to post photos of the old '73 and a nice Whitetail.

Has everyone got there rifle ready for Deer season ? I had a opportunity to check my rifles out with my Hunting ammo . My ole favorite rifle was spot on BUT my backup rifle needed some sight adjusting and my trigger was way to heavy . Hope to take it back out and try it again , maybe today .

I changed the sights on my short rifle . I went with a marbles front sight with a gold bead and the rear sight was a ole Winchester rear sight . The trigger was way to HEAVY so I back the screw out about a turn and a half . Now I need to go shoot and put the final touch on my sights .

Rowdy,  Good to hear your all geared up for hunting.  I have a question about the screw you turned 1.5 turns to effect trigger pull.  I'm not sure if I understand which screw?  Is your back up rifle a different model, or are they both 1873's?  Hope I'm not sounding dumb, but I keep thinking in my head and can only think of the hammer spring, which will also effect the speed or fall rate of the hammer.  True it may have and effect on pressure needed to lift the trigger off the shear notch in the hammer.  Just trying to understand, and not attempting to be disrespectful.

Happy Hunting

Both rifles are 1873's in 44wcf . The screw I'm referring to is under the lever . It keeps tension on the main spring .

Been out archery hunting and upland bird.  Staying clear of an area I am saving for rifle season and am ready with the 44-40 black powder loads.  We will see how they perform if I get the chance to take a shot with the rifle and cartridge.  I've been waiting all summer for Nov. 9th   Wishing everyone great luck with their hunting and looking forward to some photos.

We are all excited about Gun season . I plan on hunting with my 73 in 44wcf . I have a load worked out using BP and a smokeless load from years past . But my real interest this year is to use the BP load . I sit here chewing on a piece of Deer jerky and thinking about the oncoming Hunt . We always pray for good weather  and sometimes we get good weather and sometimes it RAINS and RAINS .  How many hunters are using 44wcf ? are you using smokeless or BP ??
Title: Re: Vintage Hunting with the 1873

I am using BP.  The load is 35.2 gr of Swiss 2fg.   with a 200gr 43-215c at .430" diameter.  50:1 lead:tin  at 1290fps.   We will see how this performs if I can connect.   Last season with the 44-40 and smokeless (A2400) I harvested a nice six point.  Complete pass through double lung and it just dropped straight down.   I am all amped up for the rifle season.   Trying to get all my chores under control so they will not interfere with hunting.

Happy hunting,

Got a chance to fire a few rounds this morning . The Rifle is doing it part , I just have to do my part . I have a box of ammo loaded with Swiss Powder . This was ammo that was being tested for Powder Inc . after the Explosion they discontinued the Black Dawge line . But I have ammo for Deer season . Plan on smoking me a BIG Buck with my 1873 . There's supposed to be a Black Panther in those bottoms , I ain't seen it our even a track . But I sure hope I do . I think his hide would look Great laying in front of my fire place . Hope the camp cook has a good recipe for panther .

Interesting story from Tom Dalton - posted on the SASS Wire back on 3/29/04..........

Just thought I would pass this experience on to all you folks. My Pa runs a Scottish Highland cattle ranch. Its small but he does OK. Well here in the Pacific northwest in Washington state we gots a few mountain lions and one of em got a hankerin after one of our 8 month old hiefers and took after during the night. Tore her poor little throat out and then left.

Cougars like to let their kill ripen a bit before they eat it. Well I wasn't too pleased so I took my Pa's Uberti made 73 in 44-40 and waited near the carcass in the field with my little brother. Sure enough the cougar came to feast and I plugged it with a 44-40 right in the chest. Penetration was clean through the vitals and came out right under her tail and clipped the end off on the way out. She bounced around for about 3 or 4 seconds and fell over dead. I tanned the hide and salvaged the skull and teeth.

The cartridge was handloaded  200 gr RNFP Orgeon Trail laser cast bullet at about 1,200 f.p.s.     Tom D

Will you take your 44wcf Deer hunting ? And do you plan to use BP ? I plan on shooting tomorrow , always like to practice as much as possible . I practice from close shots to out to 120 yards . In the woods I very seldom get a shot over 50 yards . I like hunting close , BUT you better have your crap together . And when you THINK you have them figured out they will prove you WRONG .

The weather forecast for opening day is Good . But they have a tendency to change the weather forecast everyday . So when we get up Saturday , then we will know what the weather will be .

Yeah Rowdy, I'lll be shooting black powder in my 44wcf. I plan to take my Uberti 66 rifle with 24 inch barrel since it has the sights on it I think would serve me best hunting.

Update on the 44wcf Old E. powder loads.

Accurate 43-210 35 grain 2f Old E. average 1317fps. Most accurate load tested. Nice 3 inch group at 100 yards with my eyes and open sights.

Accurate 43-210 33 grain 3f Old E. average 1345 fps.

Accurate 43-215C 35 grain 2f Old E. average 1275 fps.

Accurate 43-215C 33 grains 3f Old E. average 1311 fps. Second most accurate load tested. I'm probably going to hunt with this one since it hits perfect point of aim.

Regular Goex powder 36 grains 2F produced 1135fps with Mav44 big lube bullets. This is the load this rifle had been sighted for and hits good groups point of aim.

All loads were well within minute of deer accuracy and most were nice groups but I had a flier on the second two tests. Probably was my fault.

The sights on this gun are a large white marbles bead and the rear sight is a stock uberti sight that I have modified to the same profile as an original 1873 winchester sight. Not the best set up for real accuracy testing at a distance since the bead is too large for longer ranges but a great set up for close range deer hunting under 75 yards or so. I can find that big marbles bead with low light in the woods.

Where I plan to take this one hunting my shots probably wont be over 50 yards and likely within 30 yards.

The Old Eynsford powder does really seem to be clean like the Swiss powder.

I still have not snagged any Swiss, otherwise I'd be using it for hunting next weekend. This evening, I am loading up my 44-40 cartridges with 18 grains of 5744 under a 200 grain Accurate Moulds cast bullet for right around 1,300 fps. It gives me around 2 & 3/4" five-shot groups at 100 yards out of my original '73. Hope one of these bullets takes down the venison next week.

I plan to take my 44-40 Uberti Henry deer hunting next weekend. Loaded some cartridges yesterday morning with 35 grains of Swiss 3FG behind a a Mav Dutchman Big Lube 44 200 grain RNFP. Went to the range today and tried them. Excellent group at 50 yards. sighted 2" high at that range. Any idea what I can expect as far as POA vs POI at 100 yds. Don't plan on shooting that far, but am interested anyway. I'll be hunting in East Texas, so probability of encountering some hogs as well.

Rowdy, started out modern season shooting long range areas with modern scoped rifle. Been trying to get to the woods with my 66 for the last week but work, weather, and my neck problems have kept me from it. I'm hoping to get my four wheeler going so I can get in the last few days end of the week. My neck and back just arent going to let me get back in the woods and drag out a deer without help.

I also wound up concentrating in an area where I saw a really nice buck that was hoping would show again but the shots in those bottoms have me stretching out to around 400 yards at times so wasn't wanting to see him at a long distance again with nothing to reach out and get him.

I have shot the Old E in a few loads, it seems real clean but haven't gotten to do any extensive testing compared to swiss. I will say for the price the Old E will probably be going in most if not all of my black powder loads unless something changes. It seems to be the best "bang for the buck" so to speak. Pun intended  ;D

Still got late muzzleloader season in which Old E will probably be going in my muzzle loader.

Well now I'm all kinds of excited to take my Uberti 73 out on opening day. It's a beauty with a 30 inch barrel . I have replaced it with a 66 for when I get back into cowboy shooting. That is to say when I get weekends off again . All my guns are in 45LC cause I like it and I am set up to load it. My deer stand locations are in the deep woods and have never offered up more than a 50yd shot. It's the most beautiful spot next to a Cyprus swamp. So this year It will be the 73. Maybe next year I'll try the 1860 Henry which is in 44-40. I don't yet load for that round.
I have not been hunting yet this year. I had some abdominal surgery 4 weeks ago but I believe I should be good to go by next saturday. I will have ny 21 yr old son down the swamp if I need help. I had a Hernia for the last 3 years that I finally had the funds to get it taken care of. Lets hear it for doctors who give cash discounts.  :D
Good luck to everybody and be safe.
Oh yes ...... Lets see some pictures. I will be sure to post if I have any luck.

Good to hear. My regret this year is that I did not use black powder and a pure lead bullet. I would have if I could have gotten my hands on some Swiss. I do have Goex, however, so if I can't get any Swiss, I'll have to consider using Goex.

Thank You for the kind words . I am proud of that Trophy , them critters are hard to get with a rifle  . Several years ago I was out scouting for Turkey when we noticed a pack of coyotes moving through the woods . I started calling and I was able to break one away from the pack . I called him to within 30 yards of where we were sit up . Then I used my favorite Muzzle Loader a TC Pennsylvania Hunter , a 50 caliber round ball does an Excellent job on coyotes at 30 yards . That was the same muzzle loader I used this year to take a Coyote during Deer season ( muzzle loader ) .

I haven't shot one in years, seems the only time I see them anymore, I'm driving and see one running for his hole.

40+ years ago, when my home town wasn't so grown up, I used to shoot them in my Grandma's garden. She's call on the phone, I'd grab Dad's Win 1890 pump 22 from the closet, cross the road to her house, Veeeerrrryyy carefully raise the bathroom window, then blaze away. Funny, when she called, she would whisper on the phone, didn't want the groundhog to hear her call in the artillery.....

Rowdy,

Doubt if this qualifies...LOL.  I had 2 woodchucks (ground hogs) who wanted to stay under my Barn (shed). But they made the wrong choice... I used my Marlin 783 which is chambered for Win 22 WMR.  No more woodchucks under the barn. I Live inside city limits and with all the new construction in the area the hogs are moving into town. These two just happened to choose the wrong resident for their home sight.

Ive had a issue this year with raccoons, had one raiding the wifes bird feeders. I was instructed to be the other shooter on the grassy knoll. A rather large female took one from the cz 512, 22 mag. Another one was circling my pond, for no known reason. My 50-70 sharps with a 450 gr. Bullet made a interesting conversation piece of it. Both shot in broad daylight, midafternoon. Havent seen any woodchucks this year, which is a bit odd.

Good luck on the hunt and congrats on having vacation to take as that implies being employed.  Did you get on at the mine 4 miles from your door.

I just acquired a Miruko 73 RB short rifle in 44-40.  Just starting loading, want to get a decent CAS smokeless load for it then branch out to BP.  I have 100 rounds starline brass and 300 enroute from TOTW.  Don't want to load them with BP until I have fire formed them to the chamber.  That should give a bit more powder capacity vs the straight taper they are when new.

Rowdy it is good to see you are still actively engaged in vintage hunting. It's been awhile since I've stopped in here - but I still shoot my BP rifles now and then. I'm planning on using either the 1866 or the 1873 in 44-40 for a day or two this season for deer. I've set aside the 45/75 and 45/60 for now - but just temporary I assure you. ;)

Best of luck during your week of camping and hunting!

Have not tried TB, I have a bunch of Nitro 100, AA2, AA5, AA7, and 2400 around the house.  Given the data that I can find the only way I will be able to get to original 44-40 velocities is using holy black.  I have schuetzen 2F and 3F and Olde Eynsford 1.5 and 2F

Reading through a lot of stuff on the CAS City Forums sounds like the best bet for fouling will be the OE vs Schuetzen.  I am basically too cheap to come of the dime for swiss and the OE seems to be within a gnats behind of the quality of the swiss.

Don't know if I will ever hunt with the 44-40 because it is really hard to get drawn for a hunt here in AZ.  Having said that there is some discussion of a Hog hunt in conjunction with the SASS Convention in San Antonio 7-11 Jan or there abouts.  There will then be the 73 44-40, 92 44 mag (carbine and rifle), 94 32 WS (dads rifle and sentimental favorite) 95 30-06 conundrum.

Fantastic Buck.  So much for 44-40 not being enough gun for deer!!  Actually shot placement and a realistic appraisal of capabilities of rifle, round and the man behind the rifle all lead to a humane kill and some good eats.

Congrats, even though I have a slightly green hue

I'd say you did very well with the rifle at 65 yards and open sights. Sounds like there was plenty of oompf~ left in the projectile to the job done on both lungs after penetrating the hide. Well done!

No kidding. I've hunted deer with the .44-40 for sixteen years and have been told time and again that I need something with more power. While I wouldn't try to kill deer at 200 yards, all the ones that have crossed my sights at 100 or less never knew I didn't use a 30-06. I've said on here before, when I got my first 44 rifle, I killed three deer with Magtech .44-40 "cowboy" loads before I knew better. Of all the deer I have taken with the old 44WCF, "cowboy" or proper ammo, I never had to use more than one shot and all fell in 10-15 yards.

Swiss or 777?
Bullet?
Alloy?
Did the bullet pass through?

Thank you for making 1 less coyote roaming around.

I used 777 and the bullet was a 200 grain .429 dia . I purchased them from Valiant Bullets from Alabama . That was the reason for using the 777 because I didn't have bullets with black powder lube . The ammo that I had left over from Powder Inc. the bullets were actually a .428 even though the box was marked .429 . The load that I used did an excellent job ,when I field Dressed the Deer the bullet had destroyed the lungs . I'll be honest when I saw that Buck my fist thought was I hope I brought enough GUN ,   after shooting he ran about 20 yards and went down .

But I want to fill my doe tag and am tempted to take out my uberti 73 using cowboy load 45 colt. How close is lethal range with this caliber? Probably depends more on how far you can hit the right spot reliably. But at least 125 -150 yards, but then the trajectory gets a little loopy..

Stuck in 73
When you say Cowboy loads for your 45 colt ? What weight bullet and what is the velocity ? I killed a doe several years back with a yellow boy carbine in 45 colt . I was using a 250 grain bullet loaded with Unique powder . I would keep my shoots under 75 yards .
Also if I was thinking about using my 45 for Deer hunting I would spend time at a range , that way you can put your bullet in the kill zone . One shot one kill is a good thing . Hope this answered your question , Good Luck hunting .

I'm not sure of the velocity. They are 250gr. I got them from georgiaarms.com

"Cowboy" ammo is a low velocity target ammo not really suitable for hunting. It can be used, but you need to keep your shots close (50-75 yrds) and shot placement is important. Personally, I would advise getting better .45 ammo.

P.S. On the Georgia Arms website, the ammo is broken into two categories, "cowbow loads" and "hunting & self defense loads". That should tell you something. http://georgia-arms.mybigcommerce.com/

P.P.S. The Georgia Arms site lists the 250gr .45 colt "cowboy" loads with a velocity of 725fps. Not what I would choose to hunt with.

My 44wcf loads with the Accurate 215C bullet and FFFG Old Eynsford averaged 1315fps last time I chronographed. I haven't shot a deer with it but would choose that load over a standard Cowboy load.

That is 215 grain bullet with 36 grains of powder by weight out of a 24 inch barrel. It's got a bit of a kick to it compared to shooting regular cowboy loads. ;D
Title: Re: Vintage Hunting with the 1873
Post by: pony express on November 24, 2014, 09:26:23 PM
While I've never chronographed it, or hunted with it, my triple seven .45 Colt loads from a 19" carbine barrel used toring the steel loader than most anything anybody else had at the range. Used a 250gr bullet, and I don't remember the exact powder charge, but it did hit with authority! I wouldn't hesitate to use it hunting, it just needed some sight work to get it "on" at greater than CAS distances.

Thanks Cliff.
I'll say this, the .44-40 impressed me yesterday. My shot hit and passed through a small tree 3-4 inches wide before hitting the doe. It hit her in front of the last rib on her right side and came out through her left shoulder. She only made it about fifteen yards before she dropped. I have always liked the 44WCF, but that much penetration surprised me.

........ The Georgia Arms site lists the 250gr .45 colt "cowboy" loads with a velocity of 725fps. Not what I would choose to hunt with.

In a 24" barrel, velocity would likely be right around 1,000 f.p.s. as it was with other .45 Colt Cowboy ammunition I tested.
While it is more comforting to have a round producing 1,300 f.p.s. or so, the old 45 C0lt from a handgun at 850 f.p.s. probably accounted for many deer over the years......

Nice harvest.

Rowdy,
Thank you for the update on the bullet performance.

Savvy Jack recently tested.44-40 original bullet (pure lead) and a 75/1 lead tin mix over b.p. in ballistic gelatin.
Interesting!

Thanks for the info  27 inches of penetration is very good . This old round loaded at 1300 fps works as good now as it did in the 1870's .

Don't you love the Deluxe short Rifle .

Rowdy,

I currently have a model 92 src and rifle and have been considering getting a Uberti 73 and just can't decide between the 20" & 24" rifles with half round barrels and I believe that you have both.  This is a fun rifle and will be used for some hunting and I'm torn between the portability of the 20" vs the longer sight radius and balance of the 24".  My ideal choice would likely be a 24", half round rifle with a button mag and straight stock but no one offers a button mag option to my knowledge.  Caliber would be .44 WCF.  I would appreciate your experience with the different barrel lengths.  Thanks

I prefer the 24 1/2 . It has the half octagon barrel . I have a short rifle but I like the longer barrel , I guess I need to trade it for another long barrel . Good luck with the rifle , and Happy Hunting .

Hey Rowdy!! Really really nice buck in that first photo, and that second one ain't nothing to sneeze at either!  Beauty of a rifle and REALLY love the buckskin duds as well. It's not often I say this to a guy BUT love your outfit!!!  How about a little description of what you're wearing and where you got it all. Thanks for the compliment . The shirt is a brain Tanned Buckskin from Bear Tooth Billy . His wife made it for him and he gained a few pounds , so he sold it to me  ;D ;D ;D . The pant are Elk skin I pick them up several years ago at a shoot . The other feller had also out grown his , my lucky break . But my favorite part of this years hunt was I used a 44 wcf with a BP sub. load that I had been loading and shooting since last summer . When I shot that Buck and he went down I was a HAPPY HUNTER .   I was field dressing my Deer and saw the damage that antique round did it was amazing . Both lungs were basically reduced to two blood clots .

Thanks for the compliment . I don't think they use paint to give it the white color . After they remove the hide and meat they use beetles to eat away the rest of the gunk . Then they degrease the skull . What made it so shinny was a clear coat . I am real pleased with it and I was able to have it back in a few months .

Looking forward to this fall myself. Everything is lined up except the deer and the rifle I shoot it with. I'm thinking of my vintage 45-70 Model 1886, but I have a couple other ancient Winchesters that haven't had a turn yet either. I sure enjoyed hunting with my '73 though. I plan to take it to the range on Monday and blow the dust out of the bore.

Well I have been putting this off for a few years but this year I really want to take some Deer with a few of 45's.  I am all ready to use my new chronograph to work up some loads for my 73 and my 66. I will be using smokeless . It seems that unique might be a better choice that trailboss or bullseye.  What would you feel is a safe but effective velocity ? 1200 fps ?

Then why not do it? It only takes a few minutes.

Generally though, the 429 or 430 is going to work if it's a newer gun. All newer ones I've checked are .429 bores. If it's an original or an older Uberti it definitely should be slugged.

I hesitated (procrastinated) slugging the bore of my 45-70.  Wasn't quite sure what to use.  Finally, I flattened a lead round ball for my 44 cap and ball (0.451" smashed to over .462") and drove it down the barrel with a wooden dowel and mallet.  I wish that I would have done this when I first bought the rifle.  I was getting terrible accuracy, and found out why when I slugged the barrel...I was shooting 0.02" under-bore bullets.  She groups fine now that I'm using the proper sized bullet!

I think the distance was about 50 yards . I use starline Brass and Triple 7 powder and a 200 gr. bullet ( .430 ) I wanted a round that was shooting at the same velocities as the original round .I have a 1875 Winchester catalog and it list the 44wcf at 1325 fps . If you use Triple 7 do not use 3f it is HOT .

Thanks everyone . There is only a few of us who realize how good of cartridge the 44wcf is . But what sold me on the 44wcf was last year . The Buck I shot was down in 20 yards and when I field dressed it the lungs were like 2 big blood clots . That was impressive . A lead bullet traveling at 1300 fps did that much damage .

Post by: Cholla Hill Tirador on November 29, 2015, 07:47:26 PM
Very proud of you Mr. Fulcher.

It's amazing how hunters have "progressed" to the point that they think they need gigantic cartridges to kill a deer. All it STILL takes to kill a deer are holes through both lungs. It really is that simple.

I've been hunting this year with a Bisley repro in 45 Colt. I'm absolutely determined to get a buck with it. Here at the house I've had a couple of opportunities at bucks that weren't legal, and have passed three times on does, all within my 50 yd. range limit. The last time just this evening. We're coming out of a horrible drought and I just can't bring myself to shoot a doe until populations increase.

I've come into possession of a couple of '73's in 38-40 that are 1880's vintage. One I intend to have the barrel relined then it will become my one of my deer rifles. I chronographed some 180 gr. bullets over a compressed charge of Pyrodex P a few days ago and was stunned that five shots averaged 1386 fps. That ought to work just fine!

Rowdy,
Nice harvest! Congratulations! Your persistence paid off in another beautiful buck! ;D
I read where the cartridge you used was loaded with 777 and a 200 gr bullet.

A few questions if you don't mind.....
How did it compare in size to your buck last year?
Whose bullet did you use?
Hardness if known?
Penetration?

Thank you,

This years Buck was a 1 1/2 year old , last years Buck was a 4 1/2  . He was a nice Buck but no Monster Buck . I use a Valiant Bullet that I use when Cowboy shooting . The Triple 7 doesn't need black powder lubed bullets . The bullet passed through both Deer and I am happy with it's performance on both Deer . Plan on going after another  Buck next year with my 73 .

Yes I would . I would love some soft lead bullets . Also where is a good source for sling swivels . I have used muzzle loader slings but would rather have a set of swivels on the rifle .

I have an 1866 sporting rifle with a ladder sight (YIPEE!!) on the way. Can't WAIT to start loading and shooting and have about 200 gleaming lead bullets from a recent casting session waiting to go. My usual MO is to get some meat in the freezer with one of my modern guns (because eating comes first) then hunt with one of my Colt repros. But, next season I may deviate and use the '66 instead of a revolver. Too bad I have to wait 10 months to decide!! FWIW I'm sitting here with a steaming bowl of soup made with venison stew meat. To. Die. For!

It's a 44-40. It's an older Uberti, '90's, but it's been slicked up, hope it's accurate! Has the ladder sight which I'm pumped about as I have a 200 & 300 yd. range at the house so I hope to find a good load and regulate the sights for those ranges. I post pictures as soon as I get it.

Good stuff, Rowdy. I too find velocity spreads pretty low with the Swiss 3Fg I've been using. I don't weigh my charges but My velocities are similar to yours. I was able to achieve right at 1400 fps with my 220 gr. RNFP loading a heavily compressed charge (2.6cc) of 3Fg, but found loading easier with a little less powder (2.2cc) and that load averaged 1331 fps. Good enough.

 Keep the reports coming!

 Good shooting, Rowdy.
If you like shooting coyotes, you need to visit Texas. It's not at all unusual to hear two, and occasionally three packs carrying on at once from my house. I see them almost daily, but as long as they stay away from the house and the chicken pens, and don't bother the cattle, I leave them alone.

Got a chance to burn a little black powder after work . Wanted to try a different 3f load . Wanting to run in the lower 1300's so I tried 33 grains of 3f ,They were in the 1340 range . When I got home I got my #13 to clean up and it was empty so I grabbed a bottle of windex and it actually worked better than my old 13 .

I'm pretty much a handgun hunter these days (4 3/4" Uberti .44 Special) but I'm thinking seriously about carrying my '86 production 1873 Winchester to the stand with me this year. The load would probably be 2.2cc of Swiss 3F under a 192 gr. RNFP from an RCBS 40-180 mould. MV is right around 1300 fps. Should work fine.

It is an honour to be able to contribute to this thread. When you search for hunting with the Winchester 73, this is a thread that comes up often and so I have come across this thread many times since I am a both a .44-40 fan, a lever action fan, and like to use them for hunting. (I actually just did my first CAS match last weekend also too)

I bought this Uberti '73 short rifle six weeks ago, it has a 20'octagonal barrel. I load it with soft lead cast bullets from an Accurate Mold designed by John Kort (W44WCf on this forum), his 43-215C and 36 grains of 3F black powder. This gets me 1200 - 1220 fps which is about right, this will shoot 5 shots into 3 inches at 100metres with the factory sights.
Rarely have I been so excited to receive a rifle. And I have had a lot of rifles in my time, but I was really looking foward to this one. As well, it came just n time for a hunting trip I had planned to the mountains the next week. The deer here are European red deer, same species as American elk.

on this trip I shot two red deer hinds, both looked the same below. (My camera died after this one photo, it was the only picture I took on the whole trip) Both were shot with black powder .44-40 loads replicating the original ballistics of the cartridge.

I found that despite the low velocity, and the soft pure lead, the bullets all exited. The first deer above was shot once and died only a few feet from where I shot her. A second deer shot later I had to shoot again because I shot too high - the wound was mortal I discovered later, but I wasnt waiting to find out, because I was experiencing what black powder shooters knew better than me, because of the cloud of smoke when I fired, and with open sights, I wasn't sure exactly if I had hit the deer where I intended, and I didnt get to see the the animals reaction to the shot  as one might with smokeless modern rifles. So I payed the insurance, as they say.
So all bullets completely exited going through and through. I ddint autopsy the deer properly, I would have liked to see exactly what the bullets did, but it was getting dark soon and I was a long way from camp.

I was well pleased with how the .44 Winchester performed. I carried it a great deal, as the hunting where I am is all backpack hunting, and shifting fly (spike) camps often, and with many river crossings and climbing up ridges through thick bush too. I am glad I got a short rifle, as a 24 inch barrel might have been too heavy for carrying, I am pleased with it as it is.

I am also pleased with the performance of the black powder load and bullet, I cant see where these deer would be any deader if I shot them with my .270. And I got a real kick out of this rifle shooting black powder...the thumping concussion of it is always impressive.

I knew there was another hunting thread here somewhere. Now that I've found it, here are my two most recent using my old '86 production 1873 Winchester 38-40 using a bullet cast from an RCBS 40-180 mould (192 grs.)  and as much Swiss 3Fg as I could get under it. Velocity 1300+ as I recall.

I just ordered a pound of Swiss 3f and a pound of d Eynsford 2f for my 38-40's and 44-40's. I have loads for the 3f but am hoping the 2f will work to reduce velocities for CAS shooting.

Been watching this scrub buck for a few weeks waiting on the weather to cool down so he could hang before butchering.

I keep the rifle loaded and THOUGHT the magazine was full of BP loads, but for some reason I had filled it with smokeless handloads. Oh well, it's the thought that counts, right?

That particular load is 9.5 gr. oF Unique. It and the BP load of 2.2cc of Swiss 3Fg are ballistic twins giving practically identical velocities.

Thanks. BP in this rifle has shot very well. I'm still at a loss as to why I had it.loaded with smokeless unless it was at a point when I was out of Swiss 3Fg. Anyhow....I'll remedy that soon.

I wish I had a great story for the stock. All I know is that it was $60 on GunBroker. The rifle came to me with a bandsawn piece of oak for a stock when I was 11. we'd moved off the family "patch" into town and I missed my gramps fierce. So he gave me this old relic for a toy and to connect me and him while I lived in town. That was in 1979. This last year I started piecing stuff off of eBay and GunBroker, put the  old bastard back into service. Here's a couple more pictures.(http://)

Howdy all,

Rowdy, just wanted to say thanks for this thread - it's been fun and informative reading. I'm going hunting with my father & step-brother next week, and this thread inspired me to take my Uberti 1873 sporting rifle in .44-40. I figured I'd rather take my first deer with a rifle that is truly special to me than borrow a gun. Loading up cartridges now. Full charge of 3F Olde Eynesford under a 200 grain big lube bullet.

Not expecting to have any luck, but I'm very excited for the experience and the chance to do things 'Old School.'

Distance, what bullet, hit location, how much penetration?

Howdy all,

Unfortunately, no luck. There were deer about but none came by our (my family's) stands. That aside, it was a nice little trip, and I think I've been bit by the bug. I'll look into hunting here in good 'ol Kentucky next season; the in-laws have plenty of farmland and they saw a ton of deer on the same morning I was hunting, so maybe I'll have better luck up here.

Hope you all had successful hunts!

Thank you for the update on the bullet performance.

Savvy Jack recently tested.44-40 original bullet (pure lead) and a 75/1 lead tin mix over b.p. in ballistic gelatin.

Some time back, when I was hanging around and hunting in Montana, a fella dropped a real big buck.  Put his rifle across the rack for the obligatory photo documentation.  All of a sudden the buck shook his self, jumped up and ran off with the rifle.  Took 'im three days to find the rifle.  Never found the buck. Least wise that was the story.  Must have been some fun!!

Your right hand dragging a Deer is an Excellent way to have a Heart attack . The farm that I hunt on is a mile off the pavement .   on the wet years I use the 4 wheeler to minimize the damage to the dirt road . Now if you shot a nice Buck and was hand dragging  all the way up to the vehicle ?
Well that wouldn't be healthy or smart .Can't wait for Deer season .

My hunting bud had permission to hunt the huge fields across from his house so his hunt involved riding his bicycle down the field roads, stopping every so often to glass the soybean fields. He was meat hunting not horn hunting so whenever a curious buck would stick his head up to figure out what that thing on the field road was my bud would lay it down with his trusty .243. Drag the deer to the road, pedal back to the house unlocking the gate and drive his El Camino to the deer, load up, drive back home and process the deer. His wife made the best tenderloin biscuits.  Mmmmmm.

Might be buying some property with my son soon that has a ton of whitetail sign on it. There’s got to be a big buck on it. The rub is that my daughter in-law is a big animal lover. I also am an animal lover, venison that is. Venison is an animal right? I hope that I can twist her arm and harvest at least one off of it. Ones aplenty. I don’t think that I’d use my ‘73 but maybe my ‘76. We’ll see.

Thanks for the encouragement but I would have to actually work up real hunting loads as opposed to cas loads, very different things imo. Accurate with power loads as opposed to easy shooting minute of sass marshal at point blank range loads. I was thinking more about using the ‘76 or ‘95 or maybe my Krag for the extra power and range. My last deer rifle was a .25-06 Sendero but after selling it I did harvest a few deer with my M1. Having the much larger acreage to stretch out my rifle range will allow me to do some ammo development this fall. Couldn’t do that on an acre and a half. Used to go to my company’s 100 yd range at their employee center but the new owners have closed the range down.

We bought the property. Should become a nice homestead if I live long enough. 11 acres field- 23 acres old hard woods- newer pine woods that butts up to something called Flat Swamp. The peanuts are gone now and the farmer is doing winter wheat next, soy beans in the spring I’m guessing. Plenty of room to sight in a rifle or two. Working on cleaning up the overgrown old house sight that’s on it. House is gone just the footers, trash, fireplace, pump house and shallow well left. Exactly one hour away from me. Hoping the strong winds from the leftover hurricane took down two dead trees on the house sight yesterday.

I shot this 11 pt Whitetail just about a year ago.  Uberti '73 in 45 COlt.  It was the very first time I carried it in the field.  It was a light rainy day and I was a bit worried about the blood trail, but it was no problem.  Thirty yard heart shot...he ran about 100 yards.
