38-56 smokiless load data
« on: May 12, 2020, 06:26:22 PM »
Title says it all, I am looking for smokiless load data for a 38-56. Shooting 230g hard cast or 250g softer bullet at somewhere around 1400 fps. Using the 250g bullet if I take it much over 1450 fps I get keyholing. BP is not a concern as I already have loads for it. ROT is 1 in 20".
Rifle is  an 1886 Winchester lever action sporting rifle.
As a reference, case capacity for a 38-56 is 62g of OE 2f, case capacity for a 38-55 is 48.9g of the same.

For what it is worth, my copy of Cartridges of the World lists two loads for the .38-56:

255 gr. lead, 36.0 gr. IMR 3031, 1830 fps.
265 gr. lead, 25.0 gr. IMR 4198, 1600 fps.

Perhaps you could work on reducing these loads to get the velocity you want.

Thank you I will do that. Were those listed as max loads or somewhere in the middle?

Cartridges of the World isn't primarily a source for loads, of course, and they don't list the source. I would treat them as maximum loads and be very cautious. On the other hand, the 1886 is considered to be a strong action. Still, I would be a little cautious.
