19th century style Engraving of brass
« on: December 02, 2018, 09:42:49 AM »
I've been considering having some brass parts engraved in the font and size of the era.

Since I'll be looking for capable engravers local to me, I thought that a thread on this topic would be of interest to the entire peanut gallery.

I'm thinking that folks who work with jewelry might be more applicable than those who do sporting event trophies.

That said, has anyone had this done yet?

Greetings My Dear Story -

Unless things have "changed" I think you will find that the "sport trophy" bunch have little machines and templates , and limit themselves to names & such on presentation plaque type thingies.

you will probably want to contact those who specialize in firearms engraving - jewlery type engraving is a rather different venue and audience, and further the "firearms engravers" are more likely to have the necessary FFL!

here are a couple of  engraver web page links... I really thought I had more...

Thank you both.

Perhaps we do the jewelry engravers a disservice by not expanding their artistic horizons.

Indeed...

A lot of the jewelry folk won't do work on a weapon unless they actually know the customer.

They get to pick and choose what they do, so it's their call.

Back in the day, there were very few brass things to engrave, save for the odd backstrap.

Italian brass stuff isn't worth the effort - 'but' those repros offer a neophyte engraver all of the odd curves and rounds, along with a soft, forgiving material to practice on.

Scouts Out!

Not knowing how to properly broach a topic is a problem that can arise anywhere.

Half my time in uniform was spent in a Cav Squadron, which makes me positively charming to men, women, horses and domesticated house pets.

Should I find someone with the right artistic gumption, I'll dismount the backstrap so there's no pearl-clutching issues and inspire them like some muse that stepped out of a Greek painting.

'cause that's how I roll.
