I just saw that Mr Buck and Mr. Smith are venturing up from Texas for the Muster, and I've gotten affirmation on several of the KVC people making the trip.

I dare say this is going to be one of the larger gatherings we've had in some time.

I am pumped!

Would it be possible to arrange a tour of Ft. Hartsuff?

I'm not sure but what it's going to be the largest yet. Must be that everybody wants a chance on that new revolver.

Absolutely we can tour Ft. H. I even know a tour guide. ::) 8)

I will be there ready to fix things before anyone else shows up and after they leave.

Planning on being there from late afternoon Tue to about noon on Mon.

For those of you who haven't been here before, there's a world class Indian War Museum within about 40 miles at Fort Hartsuff. Hopefully Sunday late afternoon or Monday we'll be able to work in a trip over there.

Sorry it's been a few days since I've been active. I've been a little under the weather.
We've had several new registrations show up in the last week. We now have more officially registered shooters than what we used to have for the Dept. of the MO muster I hosted. It's really starting to look like the muster will be full for the first time ever, anywhere.

Pitspitr, I am excited about this my first muster.  I don't really know what to expect, other than a fun time and experiencing DelMonico's fabled cooking.  I'm certain to make some mistakes, but I have a driving force of friends that got me juiced into going, even though it is right on the heels of the NCOWS National Shoot.  Gonna log some miles on the buckboard that month...

Sounds like it was a fun run. Nothing quite as fast as a good ol prairie fire. Five years back I stepped out of a twelve year career as a Wildland Firefighter. Worked for both DOA and DOI as a paid arsonist. Mitigation was always more fun than suppression. But, then I always did color in the boxes. Maybe I should bring my drip torch and black-line your property Jerry.
On a second note; I'm trying to work up some .30-40 loads for Muster. Can you give me an idea what distances the rifle targets will be placed. And also a recommended bullet weight capable of target knock down.

Go thru the "Care and Feeding of the Krag" thread.  You will find load data and target video.  Any bullet weight between 180 to 220 will work fine at anything between 1000 and 1500 FPS.  You may also want no more than 30 rounds of a Milspec load for the long range portion, utilizing Armor grade targets at 100 to 300 yards.  That data is in the thread as well.

JB
We had a prescribed burn a year ago where we burned almost the entire pasture. I enjoyed it a lot more because we had a good crew that was pretty confident that the fire wasn't going to go someplace it wasn't supposed to...and it didn't. With this prairie fire I was plenty worried that it would get into my shelter belt or the shooting facilities or deer blind or all of the above.

Most rifle targets in the main match are 25-50 yds with a few out to about 100. Long Range Rifle as Drydock said will be 100-300 on armor so full power jacketed bullets are fine for it. I use the same load as Drydock for the long range. For the main match I use a 220 grain lead bullet from Scruffy Skippy over 13 Gr. Trailboss.

It's a funny deal 13 grains of Trailboss seems to work pretty well for 30-40, 30-06, 50-70 and 45-70 which is really nice because that way I don't have to reset the powder measure each time I change calibers.

Thanks for the load info. Hope to work up something to work in my Winchester '95 Carbine. I noticed in your u-tube 'staring' video that the junipers (aka cedars) had surface fire scorch on their lower limbs. Here at my end of the prairie the cedars are actually Ashe junipers; hatefully evasive species. When they become a mono-culture it's like fields of open 5 gallon buckets of gasoline just waiting. Ten or so years ago here in Texas we had almost a million acres burn in a 36 hour period. My assigned fire, Buckle L Two, went just over 42,000 acres in 24 hrs. It was the 'little fire'. There was no lay down even past mid-night. We tried setting back fire in twenty mile an hour winds off a county road with no success and fortunately no bonus acres on the wrong side of the fireline. Shortly after dawn a front came through, the winds shifted and the flame front blew back into the black. Just another 38 hour extended initial attack. The things I do to cure boredom, go figure.

So I sent an email to a pal, but have not heard back.  On the 200 yard long range, do we have to use the battle rifle that goes with our personae, or can we use any appropriately period rifle?

You could use a different rifle, as long as it fits in the same category, for instance, changing military repeater for a different military repeater. But, for instance, a 12 pound Sharps buffalo rifle couldn't be substituted for a trapdoor carbine. One year I used a Swede Mauser for the long range instead of the Lebel I used for the rest of the match(didn't have enough brass for the Lebel), no problem, other than maybe some good natured "gamer" comment for using the Swede.......

So I'll be more specific. During the main match, I would be using the standard Cavalry Trapdoor Carbine, 45-70 Govt. For the long range, can I use an 1862 Peabody replica?

Is it supposed to be in the same class, or does it just need to be from the same period?
