I wanted to recall the time frame of a purchased piece VS another, as to which order one came before the other  ???

BROW / Re: Trapdoor Rear sights?
« Last post by St. George on March 21, 2024, 10:01:32 PM »
All original sight bases are interchangeable.

Any Trapdoor with slotted screws has had its sight changed - factory installation used a blind screw head.

If you're going to do this, the original's base will have a 'C' on its side - even the repros will - and original 'C' marked rear sights are difficult to find - often exceeding the cost of the Carbine itself, when one's restoring a nicer one.

Scouts Out!

BROW / Trapdoor Rear sights?
« Last post by Doc Holloman on March 21, 2024, 09:15:20 PM »
I have an original trapdoor carbine with a Buffington rear sight.  While I find the Buffington a fine sight for shooting from a bench, for quick target acquisition shooting at 50-75 yards I find I would prefer one of the earlier trapdoor carbine sights.  Before I order one, my question is: are all the various trapdoor rear sights drop-in interchangable?  I certainly don't want to go drilling on an original trapdoor barrel.

Spencer Shooting Society / Spencers in Baltimore
« Last post by DJ on March 21, 2024, 02:48:51 PM »
Just back from the Baltimore Show.  Somewhat smaller this year, but packed with interesting arms--kind of like a museum, but have you ever tried to pick up one of the display guns at the Smithsonian to check the bore?  There seemed to be more Spencer rifles this year than in the recent past--about 25 or maybe more, mostly M1860s.  Four were on one table, one of those with a descriptive sign (and price).

It was a very good time.

52 and sunny.  Rita let the dog out yesterday, first time since Sept.  Back stairs are not the greatest.

It means I can leave for a while if she don't want to go.

She also had us run around and find stuff, she's back crocheting again. Much better than just watching TV.

Ordered a plush possum for my granddaughter. Long story for another day but her Grandmother just rolled her eyes (my Ex) at the game feed the other day.  A long story that stays alive and dates back to the summer 0f 1981, a tale worth telling and needs wrote down. ;D  Amazon is handy but don't use them much.  3 bigs roll things of the black yarn she uses came also, plus a spool of 6 lb braided.  Going to do some this year.  Probably at first go to the one city lake and fish of the fishing dock with the other old men and see how it goes.

Going to use Dad's 5500C, I got it for him Christmas 1977.  He always wanted one but not for $50.   Offered it to brother or the kids, seems I am the only one smart enough to use one. ;D

Gunsmithing / Measuring mainspring strength
« Last post by Navy Six on March 21, 2024, 11:13:33 AM »
I intend to conduct a series of tests on Colt style percussion pistols in regards to mainspring strength and its affect on percussion cap performance. I would like to accurately measure and compare a variety of mainsprings. I do have a trigger pull gauge and considered measuring that as I swapped out different mainsprings on the same gun. Is there a better way of doing this? I don't want my results to be based on "well, this spring feels heavier than that one". Any thoughts would be appreciated.

As I will be unable to attend the convention this year, will there be video recordings of the seminars?

Hopefully not on the 11 o'clock News.

Spencer Shooting Society / Re: spencer bullet selection
« Last post by Treeman on March 20, 2024, 06:11:56 PM »
I bought a Chiappa Spencer in 45 Colt two months ago. I had on hand a box of Missouri 255 Keith cast bullets coated with hi-tek coating. I loaded them to exactly 1.6 inches. Mine has ran almost perfect from day one. If I work the lever with authority it feeds and shoots like a champ. Sometimes the very last round in the tube gets a little fussy but it’ll still feed. At first it was a learning curve on how to work that lever. Don’t baby it. Now that I have probably 300 rounds through it it is smooth as butter except for that very last round sometimes.
