Title: It's Derby time...Place yer bets
Post by: litl rooster on April 29, 2007, 08:40:24 PM
Pickin' my ticket tonight   "handicapping" mine go like this

Storm in May  for the Win
if your betting this one don't coun't on getting rich...He's won his 5 outs.

  Street Sence    to Place
 2nd 1st 1 st 3rd 3rd 1 st 2nd <last six outs

 Cowtown Cat    to show
lost the stats.....but it's bred to run

I used a calulator and astrology charts and lot's finger crossing.  Before I get my $2 ticket....Any of you have a sure method of picking maybe by the colors (silks) or by the horses color?

I'll pick a longshot later

Quote
It's a beautiful day for the race
Stooge Hand is the favorite today
Assault is in there
Dog Biscuit is 3 to 1
Safety Pin has been scratched
Ya ya
And at 20 to 1 ... Beetlebomb

Now the horses are approaching the starting gate
And there they go!!

And it's Stooge Hand going to the front
Cabbage is second on the rail
Beautiful Linda is third by a length
And ... Beetlebomb

Around the first turn
Stooge Hand is still in front
Cabbage is second by a head
Cabbage by a head
Beautiful Linda is third
And ... Beetlebomb

Into the back stretch
Dog Biscuit is now leading the pack
Lady Evelyn is second, very close
Banana is coming up through the bunch
Banana coming up through the bunch
And ... Beetlebomb

At the half
Stooge Hand still out in front
Apartment House is second with plenty of room
Assault is passing Battery
Assault and Battery
Notary Sojac is fourth
And in last place by 10 lengths
I believe it is, yes it is ...
Beetlebomb

Around the turn heading for home
It's Stooge Hand and Dog Biscuit
And Girdle in the stretch
Flying Sylvester is third
And Mother-In-Law nagging in the rear
Oh oh oh

And now they come down to the wire
And it's number one
And now number two
And it's very close
There'll need to be a photo finish
Or an oil painting
And now Louis leads with a left
And Louis is in there slugging
And it's a battle
And now they're tearing hair
There's hair all over the ring
There's hair all over the place
I don't know whose hair it is, ah ah
It's mine

And there goes the winner ...

INSTRUMENTAL

Any Given Saturday, followed by a Storm In May, and rounding it out Summer Doldrums.  Sounds too much like a weather forcast not to be the winning ticket.

Buck,no unfortunatly...Many of the ones running have been sired the same way many of ours have.  We have a filly Cowtown Kid related to Cowtown Cat.  This years winner was sired by an Irish Horse"Streetcity" we have nothing by him.  I'd to have to go back over the field but I recognized 5 or 6 that were half sibling by sire.

Sorry Trinity, I shot yesterday, I'm now 140 in the hole.

The Jockey went to his stick pretty good on the final strech when he seen Curlin coming but it was too late.  The three finishers were the best on the track. Both those guys are friends and have never won that kind of race in the past.  It was their 15 minutes of fame.   I love watching run, even here on the farm when we turn 'em out, in the paddocks.

Or it could be that the horse just didn't feel like it that day.  I know all those high falutin trainers and owners don't want to hear such things, but horses have moods just like people do.  I can go out one weekend and barely have to touch my horses sides with my heels and he picks up a nice trot.  Go out the following weekend and couldn't buy a trot with lottery winnings.  You can train an animal to do what you want, but they are not always going to do it.

The Lottery was suposed to divert some of the funds collected to the public school systems in Texas, I don't think that much of it has ever reached the schools.

That's not the story here.  The school system gets the money alright.  The only hitch is that they lost the money coming out of the "general" funds. ::) ::)

The states should not be sanctioning gambling. Most of the money the state gets from it goes to law enforcement and judicial system because of the increased crime. Here we get a lottery credit on our real estate tax which doesn't add up to much. But, it is a way fer the state to tell the people gambling helps them.  >:( Now, the Indian gambling. What I have seen of the reservations, it has not help them to pull themselves up by their bootstraps.  ::)

Missouri has the river boat casinos.  Gambling's only legal if it's floating.  I have no idea what the rational behind that concept is ???
They give ya a card to put inta a machine that makes sure you don't lose more than 500 bucks in 3 hours.  If they catch ya passin slot tokens to a buddy who's run his limit, it's a big deal--they'll run ya outta there quicker than ya can blink.

I've got a cousin that is the games machine mananger over in Oklahoma, at a Cherokee Casino,  they have 450 machines,  horse race 45 or 50 days a year and have the biggest dance floor in the Tulsa Area,  last year they averaged over a million a day with all the income from everything and that's just that one Casino.  Multiply that times all the Casino's in Oklahoma,  where's all that money coming from  :o
he says he has people come in everyday that he's got to know, says several of the older ladies and men  have told him they have a $2500 to $5000 a day limit on how much they can lose.  :o :o  and he says they are there every day of the week, every day of the year.  It's just hard for me to imigine that.  and then some people have'nt got two coins to rub together, that come every Tuesday, on that day the Casino gives you $ 5  for coming in, says they'll lose that $5  have em a free coke or coffe and they are on there way to the next closest Casino to get the $5 there. says he knows several that make the rounds every Tuesday and go to 4 Casino's

they have simlicast over at the Casino by Ft. Now they are showing close ups of Big Brown''s right rear hoof taken about 200 yds into the race.  It shows a sprung shoe, they say it happened when he crosses in front of another horse and the horse clipped that hoof.  That could have thrown his stride off enough to make the jockey think something was wrong.  Big Brown refused to comment!  ;D

Big Brown trainer Dutrow faces doping penalty

Associated Press

NEW YORK — Rick Dutrow is in trouble again.

The outspoken trainer of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Big Brown is facing a 15-day suspension by Kentucky racing officials after another horse he trains exceeded the allowable limit for a drug that enables horses to breathe easier during a race.

Two separate drug tests on 8-year-old gelding Salute the Count revealed the horse had twice the allowable limit of Clenbuterol in his system after finishing second in the Aegon Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs on May 2, said John Veitch, chief state steward of the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority.

Clenbuterol, considered a Class B drug by the KHRA, is often used by humans who suffer from asthma. The drug, which Veitch said contains some steroidal properties but is not considered a steroid, is sometimes used by trainers because of it's ability to increase a horse's lung capacity.

'It's a respiratory enhancer,'' Veitch said. 'It's become quite popular in racing medication because it's used to train on.''

The drug is not permitted in racing, but is regulated by the states through the use of a threshold concentration said Scot Waterman, executive director of the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium. Trainers are recommended to avoid giving a dosage to a horse 72-96 hours before heading to the starting gate, though the threshold level varies from state to state.

Dutrow waived his right to a hearing but plans to file a written appeal, which he must do within the next 10 days. There's no timetable when Dutrow's appeal will be heard, Veitch said.

Dutrow said he sometimes uses the drug in other horses and was previously reprimanded by the New York State Racing and Wagering Board for a similar infraction several years ago.

'I really haven't had any problems with it,'' Dutrow said in a phone interview.

The first positive test was conducted by a lab at Iowa State University. Dutrow requested a second test, which was conducted by a lab at Louisiana State University. That test also came back positive.

Dutrow raced four horses during Churchill Downs' spring meet, the last on May 17. He does not currently have any horses at the track.

As part of the penalty, Salute the Count owners Michael Dubb and Robert Joscelyn must return $24,521 in purse money. On June 15, the horse finished second to First Defence in the Jaipur Stakes at Belmont Park. Drug test results from that race are not yet available said Dan Toomey with the New York State Racing & Wagering Board.

The penalty is the first for Dutrow in Kentucky, though hardly the first time he's run into trouble. He spoke openly about his checkered past during Big Brown's run at the Triple Crown. He's been cited dozens of times over the years for everything from repeated medication violations to his own drug use.

The news of the possible suspension comes just days after IEAH Stables, co-owners of Big Brown, stepped forward and said it would take all of its horses off steroids entirely and shy away from trainers who continue to use the drugs to maintain their horses.

'If they don't want to play by the rules, then they don't get to train with us,'' Michael Iavarone, co-president of IEAH, told The Associated Press in an interview Monday.

Iavarone did not return a phone call or an e-mail on Wednesday seeking comment.

Dutrow is currently competing at Aqueduct while keeping an eye on Big Brown, who has been resting since a shocking last-place finish in the Belmont Stakes on June 7.

Several pictures have surfaced in recent days indicating Big Brown ran almost the entire 1½-mile race with the shoe on his right rear foot dislodged after he collided with Guadacanal shortly after leaving the starting gate.

Iavarone said he believes the shoe problem may have contributed to Big Brown's poor showing in the Belmont, though Dutrow isn't so sure. Big Brown also ran with an acrylic patch on his left front hoof to protect a quarter crack, an injury that kept him off the track for several days leading up to the race.

'I don't know, it's kind of a puzzle to me,'' Dutrow said. 'I just don't get the whole thing. It looks like when you look at the pictures, it could have bothered him, but I should have seen it and the rider (Kent Desormeaux) didn't feel it.''

Desormeaux managed to put Big Brown in perfect stalking position on the backstretch, only to ease him as they made the turn because the jockey felt the big bay colt wasn't right. An extensive post-race examination turned up nothing out of the ordinary.

'The pictures don't lie, but neither does the horse,'' he said.

Big Brown's next scheduled race is the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug. 3.

Looks like he's been removing the restrictor plates

BTW I use the Buterol

One of Moose's friends and her husband own race horses. They had some horses in the Derby a few years ago.  One horse, in particilar, named  "50 Stars", a gray horse won the Lone Star Futirity here at Lone Star Park.  It didn't do very good in the Derby. Looks like a Filly(Racheal Alexandra) is the favorite over Derby winner (Mine that Bird)  for the second leg of the Triple Crown....

Times have been hard for the Maryland racing, looks like they are taking a new(not so new,) approach with race day . With a ZZ Top concert in the infield.

place yer bets please.

Roo, it would serve them right if Mine That Bird won the Triple Crown.  Since he's a gelding it's not like he's going to have any value other than as a racehorse to the owners, there won't be any little Mine That Bird offspring for future races.

With all the talk about drugging in the racing industry, it is losing its appeal like other drug affected sports.

all of ya bet'n yer coins on the Filly, line up at the windr' ....She lead it and won it!  "Mind that Bird" got hung up in the pack and didn't make it to the front but ran a good race otherwise.

Owners of Mine that Bird, proably wish'n they had Calvin Boral(Bo-rail) back on top of him today.  He was a stride the winner

Nuther year no Triple Crown winner...

Ain’t familiar with the names, Roo.

Teresa has something to do with horses but I think she ‘n their youngest are show folks ‘n not race folks. One of the slams on the ‘wicked-step-mother’ when she ‘n Junior had their fallin’ out. Spent too much time with four legs rather than four tires.

Midnight drug-doin’ done. Back ta the rack.

Looks like they have finally got it down to the 20 for the gate

I'm sticking with Sidneys Candy for the win

I see Paddys O'Prado on my ticket along with Awesome Act.
I think Jockey Calvin Boral was missed matched to the horse this year, but that why he rides and I watch.

$2 ticket please

Super Saver Won’t Win Preakness Stakes Says Oddsmaker
The folks from BetUS.com don't believe for a moment that Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver will repeat that feat at this coming weekend's Preakness Stakes.  They list Super Saver with +250 odds of winning the 2010 Preakness Stakes race with a payout potential of $25 for every $10 bet.

But D.S. Williams, an analyst for the BetUS.com website, seems to contradict what the oddsmakers are believing.

"Super Saver didn't run overly fast in the Kentucky Derby, meaning that he should have enough in the tank for the Preakness Stakes in two weeks.  Not only that, but his running style, lying off of the pace just a few lengths, is conducive to a Preakness victory."

Super Saver came into this year's Kentucky Derby getting more action at one point than any other horse, including the favorite Lookin' At Lucky.

Jockey Calvin Borel has predicted that Super Saver will not only win this weekend's Preakness Stakes but that he will go on to win the Triple Crown.

Borel had ridden three horses to victory in four of the last Kentucky Derby races.

  Horse / Sire Watchmaker Odds,
Future Odds,
& Best Beyer Owner,
Trainer,
& Jockey Last Race (Beyer) Next Likely Race

1 Dialed In
by Mineshaft 4-1 8-1 97 Robert LaPenta
N. Zito/J. Leparoux Florida Derby, 4/3
1st by a head, 93 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
Jay Privman: Others have had a hiccup along the way. It's been smooth sailing for him.
Mike Watchmaker: Gets credit for consistency, but he's a favorite without a big form edge.

2 Nehro
by Mineshaft 6-1 2-1f 98 Zayat Stables
S. Asmussen/C. Nakatani Arkansas Derby, 4/16
2nd by a neck, 98 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: Has really gotten good in last few races, and Derby distance is right up his alley.
MW: Like everyone else, he'll need a decent trip, but he is a top threat to win the Derby.

3 Uncle Mo
by Indian Charlie 8-1 7-2 108 Repole Stable
T. Pletcher/J. Velazquez Wood Memorial, 4/9
3rd by 1 1/4, 92 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: Encouraging work on Tuesday puts him squarely in Derby picture; mulligan for Wood?
MW: Even if he returns to form, the Derby distance has always been a question for him.

4 Archarcharch
by Arch 10-1 2-1f 98 Robert & Loval Yagos
W. Fires/J. Court Arkansas Derby, 4/16
1st by a neck, 98 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: Court gave him a super ride in Ark. Derby, taking him back and making one late run.
MW: Lucky the wire got there when it did, but he's a lot better than anyone first thought.

5 Toby's Corner
by Bellamy Road 10-1 2-1f 94 Dianne Cotter
H. G. Motion/E. Castro Wood Memorial, 4/9
1st by a neck, 94 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: Loved the way he won Wood, knifing through traffic from the back despite slow pace.
MW: Wasn't crazy about his Beyer, but soft Beyers were the rule in all final Derby preps.

6 Mucho Macho Man
by Macho Uno 12-1 30-1 99 Reeves T'bred Racg, et al
K. Ritvo/R. Maragh Louisiana Derby, 3/26
3rd by 3/4, 93 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: Consistent colt figures to get a great trip by stalking the committed front-runners.
MW: He holds up to later prep results; six-week gap coming into this is a concern, though.

7 Midnight Interlude
by War Chant 15-1 2-1f 97 Arnold Zetcher
B. Baffert/V. Espinoza Santa Anita Derby, 4/9
1st by a head, 97 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: Game winner of SA Derby, but didn't race at 2; that's a huge hurdle for Derby success.
MW: Many of these horses look so similar; maybe this could be the year that rule falls.

8 Master of Hounds
by Kingmambo 20-1 2-1f 80t Mrs. John Magnier
A. O'Brien/undecided U A E Derby, 3/26
2nd by a nose, 115 (RPR) Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: Considering how wide open race has become, can you really blame Euro for trying?
MW: Barn merits respect, but it feels like they're just taking a stab in an average Derby.

9 Pants On Fire
by Jump Start 20-1 2-1f 94 George & Lori Hall
K. Breen/A. Napravnik Louisiana Derby, 3/26
1st by a neck, 94 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: Napravnik seeking to be first female rider to win Derby; she made difference at FG.
MW: He might have been fortunate to beat the rapidly improving Nehro when he did.

10 Soldat
by War Front 20-1 18-1 103 Harvey Clarke, et al
K. McLaughlin/A. Garcia Florida Derby, 4/3
5th by 10 1/4, 76 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: If more speed keeps coming out of the race, he might get the trip he needs after all.
MW: That's his best shot, because he was ineffective when denied the lead last time.

11 Animal Kingdom
by Leroidesanimaux 25-1 2-1f 93 Team Valor International
H. G. Motion/R. Albarado Spiral, 3/26
1st by 2 3/4, 93 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: Albarado will work him at CD this week; provided he handles dirt, he runs.
MW: Even if he handles dirt, he'll be facing much better in Derby than he beat at Turfway.

12 Brilliant Speed
by Dynaformer 25-1 2-1f 93 Live Oak Plantation
T. Albertrani/J. Rosario Blue Grass, 4/16
1st by a nose, 93 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: Finished furiously in Blue Grass, but seems as though he's a turf/synthetic specialist.
MW: His first two career starts came on dirt, and he was beaten 19 1/4 and 21 lengths.

13 Comma to the Top
by Bwana Charlie 30-1 90-1 97 Barber, Birnbaum, et al
P. Miller/P. Valenzuela Santa Anita Derby, 4/9
2nd by a head, 97 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: With P. Val. aboard, you can be sure he will be a significant player in the early stages.
MW: They had it right when they were passing the Derby with this hard-hitting throwback.

14 Shackleford
by Forestry 30-1 2-1f 93 M. Lauffer & W. Cubbedge
D. Romans/J. Castanon Florida Derby, 4/3
2nd by a head, 93 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: Fla. Derby performance was outstanding; took the heat, nailed late by Derby favorite.
MW: Was surprisingly game, but no one else beside Dialed In showed up in Fla. Derby.

15 Santiva
by Giant's Causeway 40-1 37-1 91 Tom Walters
E. Kenneally/S. Bridgmohan Blue Grass, 4/16
9th by 6 1/2, 82 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: Didn't really get a clean trip in Blue Grass; won important stakes at CD last fall.
MW: Problem is, he doesn't have that one performance that says he can win the Derby.

16 Stay Thirsty
by Bernardini 40-1 40-1 89 Repole Stable
T. Pletcher/R. Dominguez Florida Derby, 4/3
7th by 16 3/4, 66 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: Ran dreadfully in Fla. Derby, and Welsch wasn't crazy about his work Sunday. Pass.
MW: Agreed, he was awful at GP, but he did wallop Toby's Corner two back in Gotham.

17 Twinspired
by Harlan's Holiday 40-1 2-1f 93 Alpha St., Skychai Racing, et al
M. Maker/M. Smith Blue Grass, 4/16
2nd by a nose, 93 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: Tough loss in Blue Grass; defections from those above him on earnings list got him in.
MW: In his only prior start on dirt, he was beaten almost 12 lengths at Remington Park.

18 Decisive Moment
by With Distinction 60-1 186-1 91 Just for Fun Stable
J. Arias/K. Clark Spiral, 3/26
2nd by 2 3/4, 88 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: There's a lot of clutter in this field. Hard to envision him even getting a piece of this.
MW: Another example of the disconnect between graded earnings and racing ability.

19 Twice the Appeal
by Successful Appeal 60-1 2-1f 89 Brown, Flores, & Hernandez
J. Bonde/C. Borel Sunland Derby, 3/27
1st by 1 1/2, 89 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: Was smartly managed to get plenty of graded cash and assure spot in 20-horse field.
MW: Just because you can do something, in this case run, it doesn't mean you should.

20 Watch Me Go
by West Acre 60-1 2-1f 84 Gilbert Campbell
K. O'Connell/undecided Illinois Derby, 4/9
6th by a 17, 66 Kentucky Derby
Churchill Downs, 5/7
JP: With the exception of Tampa Bay Derby, his form isn't much, but he's got the cash.
MW: And in Tampa Derby, he edged a horse who was claimed for $16K in his prior start.

 ;) ;)

Master of Hounds (I know of this trainer from Ireland) Aidan O'Brien is killin' 'em dead from Coolmore stud. Knew his mother down in So Cal. Will this horse handle the dirt is the question.
Next is Pants on Fire, gotta go with a female jock!!
Then Stay Thirsty..
Gotta see later on in the week for post positions assigned and odds then will adjust my order 1-2-3.

II was always told not to bet on the Gray... I never cared for one as a saddle horse either, unlike some of the guys I worked with they prided them as some exotic color.

Funny how folks from different areas got the complete opposite info. on them grey horses.

Have ridden quite a few grey saddle horses in my time & have to agree they did have a funny personality about them. I'd never owned one myself. Guess some folks just favored the color most of all.
It's always fun to watch the Derby race, and the colorful hats on the ladies.

Yep the Hats    The Royal Wedding goers had nothing on the Kentucky derby goers.   Virginia has their Hat day also on the 1st Sat in May, the Gold Cup Races are held at the The Great Meadow about 20 minutes NW of here in the The Plains Va.   Fancy hat's the Fancy cars  Fancy Pinics using the best Virginia Wines.  It feilds horses and trainers from all over the world as does the Derby.

Has an intestinal infection, which moved everyone up a notch or 2  The odds have change drastically on "Pants on Fire" around 9 to 1 however the Kentucy Oaks was just run and the Jockey for Pants  on Fire, Rosie Napravnik run out of dirt, ended up taking a strong second. Her mount came from the rear and just there by a hair at the end. I imagine the bookmakers will adjust accordingly now.

I am going to box my bet going with Twice the Appeal-Mucho Macho Man-Stay Thirsty

Youu still got some time to tune your bugle. There was 13 races today.

I seen Chef Bobby Flay on there today, he predicts "Soldat' will win the the Triple Crown....I'd bet a worn out martingale he does not bet his TV channel on it.

The CasCity chef have any predictions?

The one I did pick was the only one that I thought had a chance.  The other 2 were sciienticial picked, Liked the name silk colors the Jockey, throw em all in a hat and draw them.     Just as hard to pick the top 3 at Darlington too.

I have to admit I didn't think Animal Kingdom would be wearing the roses

May 21 at Pimlico, but not until very recently did Dale Romans, the trainer of Shackleford, realize that his colt is in line for smaller, albeit significant, bonus as well.

“I didn’t know about it until yesterday,” Romans said Thursday on a national teleconference. “It’s a little more incentive to go there.”

Yes, by virtue of merely running in the Fountain of Youth Stakes, then finishing second in the Florida Derby, Shackleford is eligible for a $550,000 bonus in the Preakness. That means that both he and Dialed In stand to win more money should they capture the Preakness than would Animal Kingdom, who just outran those two rivals, and 16 others, in the Kentucky Derby.

Currently the list looks like this for next Saturdays Preakness

Horse                  Trainer             Jockey      Last Start      Watchmaker's Odds

Animal Kingdom Graham Motion John Velazquez 1st, Kentucky Derby 5-2

Astrology Steve Asmussen Mike Smith 2nd, Jerome 15-1

Concealed Identity Eddie Gaudet Sheldon Russell 1st, Tesio 30-1

Dance City Todd Pletcher Ramon Dominguez 3rd, Arkansas Derby 15-1

Dialed In Nick Zito Julien Leparoux 8th, Kentucky Derby 6-1

Flashpoint Wesley Ward Cornelio Velasquez 4th, Florida Derby 20-1

Isn't He Perfect * Doodnauth Shivmangal Undecided 5th, Jerome 50-1

King Congie Tom Albertrani Robby Albarado 3rd, Blue Grass 20-1

Midnight Interlude  Bob Baffert Martin Garcia 16th, Kentucky Derby 15-1

Mr. Commons John Shirreffs Victor Espinoza 3rd, Santa Anita Derby 20-1

Mucho Macho Man Kathy Ritvo Rajiv Maragh 3rd, Kentucky Derby 6-1

Nehro Steve Asmussen Corey Nakatani 2nd, Kentucky Derby 5-1

Norman Asbjornson Chris Grove Julian Pimentel 4th, Wood Memorial 30-1

Saratoga Red * D. Wayne Lukas Undecided 6th, Churchill allowance 10-1

Shackleford   Dale Romans Jesus Castanon 4th, Kentucky Derby 12-1

Sway Away Jeff Bonde Garrett Gomez 4th, Arkansas Derby 20-1

I high lighted the ones I think are the best in the field I think Shackleford is not out of the Running but think Nehro been holding back and is the one to watch...fine print stuff here...Remember all investments run a chance of loss's- remember you should deversfy(sp) your porfolio with other ivestments, slots winnings-lottery tickets etc

Heard of some distressin' news of late affectin' the horses on the Western end of the map..
EHV-1 Equine Herpes Virus -1 had reared it's ugly head in Ogden Utah at a NCHA Cuttin' horse competition from April 30 to May 8th. A few cases have been reported in CA, NV, WA, ID, UT, CO British Columbia and a case in Alberta Canada. There is no cure for this deadly virus, and horses can be exposed by airborne or contact touch or equipment. Horse tracks can be next in line for being "on watch".
I am a 7 year volunteer member of the Reno Rodeo and this will certainly throw a challenge at our feet, I work back in the stalls area checkin' in the contestants horses. Our rodeo runs 10 days and a couple days a head for preperation. Our rodeo has one of the last known cattle drives to open the festivities. We may house a couple thousand head during this time on contestant turnover. We have 3 big jackpot ropings, a PWCA barrel race, a santioned NCHA/PCCH/NRC/CHA Cutting horse futurity, cow sorting...etc. We have state and local officials learning more about the risks and preventive measures right now
I just wanted to let some unsupecting horse owners know 'bout this.
I wish I knew how to post a link with the info needed...I'm dumb as a rock on the cut + paste to link to the pages necessary :(
I just "googled" the info and a host of news articles came up...

Shakelford was the best horse there yesterday

It's been like 33 years since there has been a Triple Crown Winner. It's disappointing in many ways. Like hoping to see the Cleveland Indians win a worlds series again.  Many of the horses we see today are bred the following the same bloodlines has the previous winners, they are trained the same way. Yet the title elodes them. I suppose this is what keeps the excitment in the series of races.

3 weeks till the Belmont. Not alot of time off  for a young horse.

Belmont 2011 contenders

Oddsmakers are currently listing Animal Kingdom, Shackleford and Nehro as the horses to watch in this year's Belmont Stakes after making impressive runs at the 2011 Kentucky Derby and the 2011 Preakness Stakes in May.

Animal Kingdom's initial victory at Churchill Downs, followed by Shackleford's surprise win at Pimlico, make them obvious favorites.

Nehro, who came in second in Kentucky, sat out the the Preakness but will meet up once again with the big boys at Belmont for an exciting race that will keep spectators at the edge of their seats. Add to that a possible upset by this year's sleeper, Mucho Macho Man, and you have all the makings of a horse race.

Other contenders scheduled to run in the final leg of the Triple Crown this year are Master of Hounds, Awesome Patriot, Alternation, Harlan's Hello, Brilliant Speed, Monson, Prime Cut, Santiva, Stay Thirsty, and Isn't He Perfect.

What a Triple Crown winner looks like

The past week has highlighted a Kentucky derby prospect. Winning the Louisiana Derby running with 109 to 1 odds

It's April and almost Derby Time
Little warm up, story from AP

NEW ORLEANS - Gennadi Dorochenko purchased Hero of Order for $3,000. The horse is now worth a whole lot more to his Russian owner and trainer after making history on Sunday at the Fair Grounds.
Hero of Order, which went off at odds of 109-1, took the $1 million Grade 2 Louisiana Derby, holding off pre-race favorite Mark Valeski down the stretch to become the longest shot ever to win the race. He also was the longest shot in the 13-horse field.
Previously, no horse with odds of 99-1 or higher had finished better than third.
"This horse I bought ... I break him, train him, everything,'' said Dorochenko, who spoke in a halting, Russian accent and talked in between sips of champagne. "I buy not expensive horses but I make these horses rich, expensive horses. Show me one genius here in America who buys a horse for $3,000 who wins $1 million race.''
Hero of Order took the lead midway through the far turn, stayed near the rail and held off Mark Valeski by half-a-length, running the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.13 on a fast track. Rousing Sermon finished third, a nose ahead of Cigar Street, considered Mark Valeski's biggest challenger entering the race.
Hero of Order paid $220.80, $79.20 and $25.40.
Mark Valeski appeared on the verge of catching Hero of Order midway through the stretch. But jockey Rosie Napravnik, who won the 2011 Louisiana Derby aboard Pants On Fire, could not coax her horse to make up that final ground.
"We came around Cigar Street, and it looked like he got him put away easy enough and needless to say, that's who we thought we had to worry about,'' Mark Valeski trainer Larry Jones said. "We've been running against (Hero of Order) all meet, and I guess it was his turn.''
Hero of Order finished fourth in the Risen Star Stakes, the major prep race for the Louisiana Derby, and well behind Mark Valeski, which lost by a nose to El Padrino.
"We all doubted him every time he's run a little bit, but he's run well every time,'' Napravnik said of Hero of Order. "He's run the numbers that are good enough to compete, so it does and it doesn't surprise me.''
New Orleans native Eddie Martin Jr. was aboard Hero of Order, winning the Louisiana Derby for the first time.
"The horse showed good speed and put me in the race right away,'' Martin Jr. said. "My strategy was just go. I knew he was fit but I didn't know how good he was going to be against this sort of competition. . I guess you could say it's a fluke but the horse is really a legit horse. He proved he was deserving of the race.''
It was Hero of Order's second career victory in 14 starts. He earned $600,000, more than enough to qualify for the Kentucky Derby.
Dorochenko, 53, said he never had attended the Kentucky Derby and was non-committal about his future plans. He said he came to America in 1993 and began training horses in 1997.
"We'll see how he's feeling,'' he said. "I'll tell you one thing. I'll not be afraid to run in the Kentucky Derby or something. We'll see who's the best.''
Mark Valeski paid $3.40 and $2.80, while Rousing Sermon paid $4.00 to show.
Last year, the second- and third-place finishers at the Louisiana Derby - Nehro and Mucho Macho Now - finished in the exact same order at the Kentucky Derby.
"I'm disappointed we didn't win because I thought we were going to be the best horse, but we ran a good race,'' Napravnik said of Mark Valeski. "He's still a very nice race horse.''
The Louisiana Derby was one of three graded stakes races on Sunday's card. Nates Mineshaft ($20.80) blew away the field in the Grade II New Orleans Handicap for horses four years and older, winning by 7 1/4 lengths in a track record time of 1:47.64. Casino Host ($23.80) took the Grade II Mervin H. Muniz Jr. Memorial Handicap on turf for horses four years and up.

For the owner for sure. I am sure the trainer and their staff was estatic also. Then there are those that placed a few coins on it to win.

The critics are not saying much about this one, but I am watching it. Still a couple of weeks before post time.

No wordy description
Done Talking was no factor opening when opening 2012 with a10th in the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes, but the Maryland-based colt found the right spot to take advantage of his one-run closing style Saturday, finishing fast to win the Grade 3 Illinois Derby by nearly a length.
Give trainer Hamilton Smith credit for the massive turnaround in form, but Done Talking registered a pedestrian 92 BRIS Speed rating while rallying to defeat recent Aqueduct maiden winner Morgan's Guerrilla. The $300,000 payday should ensure his participation in the Derby field, but the Broken Vow colt could easily find himself overmatched against much deeper competition.

Here's how I see it tomorrow.

Gemologist                                        7-1  Won the Wood Memorial

Dullahan   If I calculated correctly      7-5  Won at the Bluegrass  Dale Romans Trainer

Take Charge Indy                             5-1  Beat the Favorite at the Florida derby ( I really like this horse but am worried the distance won't be kind to it)

Bodemeister      current favorite         9-2   Won the Arkansas I normally like the horses winning the Arkansas Derby. I am not convinced this is a Derby winner.

LONG-SHOT.. This is the one I think, I am banking on for gas Money Home and got a $2 ready to go.
Done Talking      the Maryland Horse trained by Hamilton Smith   currently at 50-1

Remember investments are risky so don't put all your eggs in the same basket..

Since the Rapture is due today, we need a horse with a spiritual name....but there isn't one.  Could spell trouble.

Bodemeister went farther than I thought he would.  It was a good race for the Young Jockey the Horse and the First time Derby Trainer. Even if he's a canuk ;D  If Union Rags had a different name I may have looked at better.

I'll Have Another, moves to the top of the winners list

Even though Bodemeister didn't win it was good to see Mr Baffert up right though it look liked he was struggling taking the walk over.

Since Brimstone Island is not running, I have scientifcally picked the winners. Their names on the dart board.

Here is the way I see the finish to lay out at the Preakness.  The Bookies are still saying Bodemeister. I just don't see this horse going the extra distance.

Creative cause

I'll have another

Went the day well

Bodemeister

Remember as in all investments some losses may occur

I do also.

It was a fine running of horses there at Pimlico. If I could had my first three in the right order.  I just watched the replay from the overhead cam. "I'll have another", exploded in the last 1/8 like it was outfitted with Nitro.

from Daily Racing Form

Just like he did in the Kentucky Derby, I'll Have Another ran down Bodemeister in the late stages of Saturday’s $1 million Preakness Stakes at Pimlico and is now in position to become the first horse since Affirmed to sweep the Triple Crown should he win the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on June 9.

Arcey, I believe that was Jockey Joel Rosario on Creative Cause, who's brother a Policeman in Dominican Republic. Died earlier today in a automotive accident. Not known if in the line of duty or not.

I can remember a couple times seeing two of them hook wheels and wrecking. I have seen them singlie flip over and get in a mess with the horse.  I seen mule races where the mule would just stop and sit down and the bike get hit. The trotter races are almost as bad as Chuckwagon races.

The complete 2012 Belmont Stakes post positions and morning line odds follow:

1 - Street Life, 12-1
2 - Unstoppable U, 30-1
3 - Union Rags, 6-1
4 - Atigun, 30-1
5 - Dullahan, 5-1
6 - Ravelo's Boy, 50-1
7 - Five Sixteen, 50-1
8 - Guyana Star Dweej, 50-1
9 - Paynter, 8-1
10 - Optimizer, 20-1
11 - I'll Have Another, 4-5
12 - My Adonis, 20-1

The three to watch in this race. There are some tempting odds though. I think a little ole'$2. wager on Ravelo's Boy might be interesting.  Some video's earlier "I'll have another" looks healthy and strong in it's morning works.

What’s so freakin’ stupid ‘bout the whole thing here is the same politicians that foul it up are watchin’ their own damned constituents make day trips to the West Virginia casinos.

Poll run in the paper askin’ readers what they’d do with the Norfolk Waterside property downtown overwhelmingly went with casinos. A group of hotel CEOs from the ocean front go to Richmond with casino proposals ‘n get doors slammed in their collective faces. All they're askin' for is slots I wouldn't walk 'cross the street ta play but thousands would.

They were slick with the lottery. Said it was goin' ta education 'n it does. Redirect the education money replaced by lottery money ta the general fund where they can waste it as they please.

Anyone want a choo-choo ride?

Here is tomorrow's field

Oxbow          30:1
Revolutionary  10:1
Golden Soul     50:1
Normandy      12:1
Invasion
Mylute           15:1
Giant Finish     50:1
Goldencents     5:1

Palace Malice   20:1

Will Take         20:1
   Charge
Frac Daddy     50:1
Java's War     15:1

Thinkin’ the weather manipulators did it on purpose. Rain delayed start of the Talladega thing ‘n the Derby  bell was right about the same time. Made for a busy back button on the remote. Damned if NBC can’t werk in five er six minutes werth of commercials as well as ESPN can.

It’s all George Bush’s fault.

The worst thing about the Derby is Bob Costa still gets a check from NBC

It's raining going to stick with Orb.

but just to back it up like Arcey I'll put 4 bits on Titletown

Orb   5/7
Goldencents   7/1
Departing   9/1
Mylute   9/1
Itsmyluckyday   9/1
Will Take Charge   14/1
Governor Charlie   14/1
Oxbow   16/1
Titletown Five   33/1

looks like Mestiza is the big winner with Oxbow.... Orb just could handled the pressure I guess. He made his break then hit the brakes

Oxbow  went wire to wire and looked amazingly fast, on what looked like a slow track
Mylute finished 3rd

11th - The Belmont Stakes (G1)

8-5 Orb (3-1)
3-1 Revolutionary (9-2)
6-1 Palace Malice (15-1)
8-1 Freedom Child (8-1)
8-1 Vyjack (20-1)
10-1 Oxbow (5-1)
10-1 Unlimited Budget (8-1)
10-1 Overanalyze (12-1)

Looks like Orb is the favorite for the final leg of the triple crown. You will see that several of these did not run in the Preakness. Giving them the extra time to rest and prep for the longest of the 3 races.

One of the com mentor's said what the biggest issue is there. It's the accommodations. It's just as easy for me to fly home as it is to drive back to Richmond and find a place to stay. If you are a out of state trainer then there is no place to stay either. I loved taking horses there it was easy in and out, little security to contend with and I could be home at a decent hour.

Ever year, NASCAR ‘tweaks’ the aero package. Ever time they do they stick sumthin’ on the bodies what pokes a bigger hole in the air. End up with cars what gets stuck inna bunch of other cars, they lose down force (what was ‘discovered’ by Mario Andretti ‘bout four years after Don Garlits was usin’ it on 'is dragsters) on the nose ‘n they won’t turn. Everbody ‘n ‘is kid brother tells ‘em it ain’t gonna werk, they do it ennyways. Then, when folks publically criticize the package, in other werds, tells the truth, NASCAR fines ‘em.

He was both... It is the way the race has been ran forever. It is also the reason there has only been 11 winners.
So he had to know what he had in store for his team and especially the horse when Brookside picked it up for the trip to New York.
It does seem unfair that out of such a short field less than half of them ran in derby or preakness. As far as that goes have they raced in the past month.
You watch over the years many times the contender scratches near race day.
The 11 horses who won the Triple Crown were the top- watch the old footage of the races- you'll see the difference in Secratariat and California Chrome.
I feel for the owners i know they invested their entire lives into that one horse.  It was a gamble from day one. They should have take their winnings and smile. The stud fee's from CC will make the horse and them comfortable along time.

As far as getting fined. I don't know. I am sure he won't be popular with many at the top.

CC had an "off" day and he got his foot cut during the race. His owner was caught up in the emotion and said what he felt.
Title: Re: It's Derby time...Place yer bets
Post by: Lucky Irish Tom on June 08, 2014, 10:27:09 AM
Horse racing like many other sports bow to the money. If you made the qualifications what he wants, even though it would be fair then many of the big money stables would complain because they couldn't run and beat the contender. Stud fees are what pay the bills and you can believe that Tonalist will command high fees as the horse that beat California Chrome in the Belmont. The thing the media downplays is that there were two other horses ahead of him and one that finished neck and neck with him so he would have lost to one of the other two if Tonalist had fallen off the pace.

It would take a lot of breeders and trainers screaming about the unfairness of the rule to bring about a change. Then if 20 qualify for the Derby and that limits the pool, and of that only 15 of them are able to run in the Preakness and then only 10 are left to race at Belmont will they get the crowds and the TV revenues under those circumstances?

Tune in next year.

So it’s off to the Grand Sierra Resort later.

There hasn’t been any real power house runners . But it only takes one to out shine the others.

The experts are all warm and fuzzy with Bob Bafferts entry Justify. Has only ran 3 races but has won them.

I am placing my $2 on Bolt d’Oro....
And another $2 on Magnum Moon at 50-1 would parlay in to a bunch of Washingtons. I know $2 is a extravagant bet, but you only live once.
