Here's a pair of Second Model S&W 38SA's with 5" barrels and leather. Nice fun as main match shooters.

I have submitted an article about the 1st SA .38 Smith & Wesson for publication in The Shootist.

Here is a bit of a pre-view.

There were four versions of the "Baby Russian."  Blued & Nickle with 3 1/4 and 4 inch barrels.

The first model lasted only 2 years, 1876 and 1877. The improved second model uses the cam style extractor system (much less expensive to produce) than the scaled down Russian ratchet extractor system. Total production for the first model numbers 25,548. The second model produced from 1877-1891 went to 108,255 total manufactured. There was also a third model (Model of 1891) sans the spur trigger for a real trigger guard. Some even came with a single shot target barrel. I cobbled together an imaginary 1881 single shot target model with 8" .22lr barrel from my second model single action parts box.

The 3rd model, though manufactured in about the same numbers as the "Baby Russian," is very scarce.  It is easily identified as it is the only S&W SA .38 with a trigger guard.  Most are nickel with a 3 1/4" barrel.

A very cool revolver - something else to add to my wish list.  I also really enjoy Ian's videos. They are well done and informative without distractions.
