BP (or substitutes) in Schofields
« on: April 18, 2008, 08:03:17 PM »
Anybody shoot BP (or BP substitutes like Triple 7) in their Schofields? What have you experienced?  :-\

Try taking a look through the back 'pages' of this forum - this one's been answered and discussed quite a few times.

I did several "searchs" using BP, BP substitutes, Tripple 7, 777, etc. and nothing comes up. Want to point me in the right direction?  ???

Simple answer.   Unless you plan to clean out the gun in between stages,  stick with smokeless.  Previous threads suggest the same advice.

Searches don't work nearly as well as reading the subject line of a thread.

There are too many variables.

These are new guns - built for smokeless powder and not for black powder - and their tighter tolerances reflect that.

Had they been built for BP or substitutes - they'd have gas collars to deflect the debris and fouling.

BP in Schofields

In my experience with BP, they need lots of lube.  Lots.  I use a bullet with generous grease groove, plus an under-bullet grease cookie, with a beeswax wad below that.  I can shoot maybe 4 stages without doing much to it, but it starts feeling gummy.  Rinsing/wiping away as much fouling as possible after each stage seems to help, too.  Good Luck.

I have had good luck with Goex Pinnacle.  It is made by the same company who makes APP.  It is graphite coated so it's not white like the APP.  It flows through a measure well. I load my 44 Russians and 44-40 on my Dillon 550.  My S&Ws are originals and I used to shoot real BP in them but my 66 when loaded with 44 Russian rounds binds up fairly easy so I just switched to Pinnacle for everything.

Thanks guys. I had heard that Schofields bound up with BP but I wanted to know if anyone had any success with Triple 7. I guess the only way to really find out is try it myself. I suspect I will have to lube the hell out of it and clean it between stages.  :-\

When I asked Mike Daly of Hodgdon's about using 777 in my original Smiths he advised against it.  It was designed for inline muzzle loaders and has more pressure than other subs.  He really advises against fillers with 777.

I shot with a pard named Hard Way a couple weeks ago, he told me he can go two stages with his Uberti Schofields using APP before needing to wipe the face of the cylinder.  FWIW, YMMV, etc  :)

You might want to check the archives of the black powder board here at Cas City.
