Spencer Carbine - breech block with the lever all came out
« on: June 23, 2020, 05:29:22 PM »
I was out shooting at the range today, and as I was cycling the rifle, the whole breech block with the lever all came out of the rifle, can't seem to find a way to put it back and why would this happen

The trigger plate stop is too short allowing  the action to over ride.Best fix is to add meatal to trigger plat stop and reshape,to put action back in place remove action screw and then remove and replace action and screw

Yep. One common fix is to make a thin washer and place it over the post between the breech block & lever. I had to do this to mine about ten years ago, and it's been fine ever since.

I sent it back to Chiappa for warranty repair, it was only a couple months old, I figured they might as well fix there own problem

JBar4Ranch,

That is a very clever fix for a somewhat common issue.  I have never had this issue with mine but I will remember it from now on.

I presume that it will move the firing pin off of center since the whole block is lifted.  It is not too much of a problem?

The thin washer will not raise the breech-block.  It will keep it from being pulled so far down that it risks bypassing the triggerplate.  Personally I had my gunsmith add metal by welding on the front end of the triggerplate.  This happened to my .45 Schofield carbine, but has not (yet) happened to my .56-50 CF rifle.

Just received this back from warranty repair, took it back out to the range and fired 3 shot and it came out again

Hello, Curtis:

Jbar4's washer suggestion usually helps and it will not void the warranty.
Rather than pay shipping again, please try the washer.
I used a piece of (easily cut/finger nail filed) credit card hard plastic at first.
Please report. Thanks.
All the best,

That washer must be really thin, tried to put one in but must have been to thick, because action would not open up all the way
