Mold for 45/60?
« on: December 15, 2022, 04:49:22 PM »
So I'm looking for a good mold for my new to me 45/60, and I'm looking at this one from Accurate,
https://accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=46-305C. What do you guys like? I will be shooting both black and smokeless, which is why I want a design with the crimp groove.

Looks just about right compared to the 46-292L & LP (Lyman 457191 the Win Copy).  The 46-305C -- crimp groove is at the same height; the OAL is the same; and the meplat is the same diameter.

PS -- I bought an Accurate mold for the same reason when I got a 38-40 WCF.  The crimp is important.

I'm using the 457191. Casts just under 300gr in 20-1.

Howdy King Medallion,
I apologize for jumping on this thread with a question about your Presidio:
Can you tell me what your Barrel slugged?
Squinting extra hard at my calipers clamped around what’s left of a hornady musket ball pounded down the bore shows me .5156;  (the rifling made my tight patch turn the flag once in somewhere around 22”)
My serial number is TX 0087
Thanks,
Drummer Boy

Howdy DB, my Presidio slugged at .513. SN. 0058. I bought several different types of bullets that didn't shoot worth a hoot and finally got an Accurate mold 51-350CL, which shoot purty good. Don't much like the sights tho. Change the front to a Marbles .410W I believe. Now shoots POA at least.

Sorry, ask any real machinist if a "good" set of digital calipers can be had for $15, and the resounding answer will be no! Anyone that plays this whole reloading and gunsmith game to any degree of finesse should have a quality 1 inch micrometer and a "good" 6 vernier caliper. Both can be had at a reasonable price by just looking, new or used and will not be Chinese. Ebay, pawn shops etc. are full of these tools from retired machinists. Starrett, Brown and Sharpe, SPI  are a quality choice.

I bought a $15 dollar digital caliper and used it for about a week before it went in the garbage. My grandpa gave me a dial caliper 30 years ago that was made in Japan in the 60s. Very high quality and always accurate.  These days it would be nice to have a larger dial with bigger numbers.

To give the devil his due, it does seem that Brown and Sharp were manufacturing vernier calipers accurately graduated to thousandths before the Civil War, so one could assume that Winchester had a few laying around the shop during the 1876 epoch
STILL…lead has the “Brunelle” hardness of a ripe avocado…not a material that demands a great “degree of finesse”…so maybe I’ll just keep squinting…I did call up Acme Bullets and ask them what they used:  Starrett…
