Spencer Shooting Society / Re: Replacement Lever Screw
Last post by ershipambiti - October 06, 2024, 08:34:23 PM
Quote from: difficultysnazzy on September 10, 2024, 09:22:20 PMIt's a good idea to preserve the original lever screw on your M1860,basketball legendsespecially if it's showing wear. Replacement screws made from tool steel can be a great choice as they are generally tougher and more resistant to wear compared to original vintage screws.
So is there a way to not compromise the quality of the lever screw head each time you remove it? If you say to keep the original screw head, what should I do if it is old and worn?

Well sir, my reason would be I simply don't have a need for a long barrel. I don't hunt much anymore,  and the 76's aren't legal to hunt with anyway here. I'm  not a long distance shooter, my range is 125 yards max, and if I can hit anything at that range with regularity, I'm happy. All that extra barrel isn't needed for me. And a shorter barreled rifle is easier to handle. That's why I like them.

The '76 is not a light rifle and the .40-60 is not a heavy recoiling round.
In the .40 .45 and .50's with a full mag tube they are quite hefty. You would hardly notice the recoil difference with a shorter barrel.

King,

Could you or would you, please explain your preference for a short barreled rifle in a large caliber like the 40/60.  To me the lighter rifle (short barrel) just seems contrary for a larger caliber. It would seem awkward and difficult to handle the recoil.

I can understand CAS/SASS desire for a short pistol caliber rifle for faster movement between targets but not for large calibers.

Maybe your explanation would change my mind about these short barreled rifles, that some people even purposely create.

Thanks, if you don't mind sharing your beliefs and motives.

Praying for all of you in Milton's path and those still suffering from Helene's damage.
Great day at Church today, pretty weather but a bit warm at 86, but after today supposed to be in the 70s and low 80s this week. Getting estimates for a new roof...ugh. No leaks yet, but it is getting time for a replacement.
Hope we will still be able to go to Florida on our scheduled vacation in 2 weeks!

I've boarded up the windows, I'm plum tuckered out.
Tomorrow, I have to get feed (Hay is actually to be delivered in the AM)
I'll stow away the very last of outside articles tomorrow as well.

Supplies & Generator (check) Propane (check)

Hunkering down Tuesday night, most likely lose Power and internet.
