Treso Nipples, Remington size ten?
« on: September 08, 2009, 07:24:01 PM »
Was wondering if Remington #10 caps fit the Treso nipples? Nipples on Uberti 1861 Navy I have had for a few years don't work well with Remington # 10s'. Don't fit right, some are tight and other caps are loose. Thanks.

I have dozens of cap and balls and they are all fitted with Tresos and all I use, and most everyone I know uses, are Remington 10s.  Are you saying your Uberti 61 Navy is fitted with Tresos and the Remington 10s don't work.  If you are talking stock Uberti nipples they are junk.  They vary in length and diameter.   99 dedicated C&B shooters will recommend Tresos and Remington 10s and then some one will always get on a thread and say they shoot Albanian caps on stock nipples and everything works fine.  Believe who you want.

Pettifogger,
Sorry that my post was confusing. I have stock Uberti nipples on the 1861, I agree they are junk. Was wondering if Treso nipples work best with Remington # 10 caps.  I will pick some Treso's up tommorrow or the next day. Thanks again for your help.

It's generally recognized that TRESO nipples and #10 Remington caps are the answer to a whole host of cap and ball questions. Reliability goes up a bunch.

Im about out of the Albanian caps. Do you have a source?? ;D

Yep, I use the Tresos and Rem #10s on my Remingtons and they made it shoot like a completely different critter. No more cap jams, missing caps, etc. Also easier to cap on the clock, as they fit pretty much perfect, so no fumbling around.

Howdy!

Just a word of warning ... I got the TRESO cones (nipples) for my 2nd Gen. Colt (tm) 1st Model Dragoon.  They are the same that fit the Colt (tm) Walkers.  They work best (as far as I've found) with Remington #11s.  It must be due to the size of the Colt Walkers and Dragoons.  I THINK the Uberti (marked) Dragoons and Walker take a standard size TRESO, but I'm not sure.  The stock Colt cones are an odd size - someone told me (Fox Creek Kid, if I remember right) that the Colt nips use #12 caps.  I don't know for sure 'bout #12s (I couldn't find any), but I tried CCI, Remington and Dynamit Nobel #11s and #10s from all of them and none would fit the stock Colt  nipple.  On the TRESOs, the Rem #11s fit perfectly.

+1.  That and filling the safety notch in the hammer with JB weld will lead to a more harmonious outcome..

I never used Albanian caps.  IIRC they were just repackaged CCIs anyhow. ;D

I've only installed one set of Treso revolver nips and my impression was they were a bit longer than the stock nipples I replaced. Rem #10 caps fit them fine.

The ORIGINAL Dragoons used a larger cap. I happen to have some old Rem. #12 caps for such and no they are not for sale.  ;D

#10 Rem. on left & #12 on right.

I'm considering a set of AMPCO (Treso) cones for my Uberti 1849. But, I'm interested because they claim to have a smaller dimeter flash hole. My revolver goes off every time, but blows the cap under the hammer. It isn't pulling them under as the piece is cocked/advanced. I have also never filled-in the notch on my Colts (1860s), but again, am considering for this one. If so, I will make a smaller notch to continue use of the "safety" pin when desired.

I must be the minority. I have factory cones on my small assortment of eyetalian Colts/Remingtons whether they be Uberti/Pietta/ASM. I have adjusted the shape of about 50% of them to correctly fit the desired percussion cap. I make the cone smaller as that's the easy way to do it. Generally removing some of the taper from the sides & turn to a consistent diameter. Yes, I have several pair that I will claim near 100% reliability (when I remember to seat the ball over the powder  ;D)

For caps, generally I'm using CCI #10s for the Ubertis (including a Dragoon, 1860s and 1849) and CCI #11s for the Piettas.

I have a Pietta 1858 NMA. I replaced the stock nipples with the Tresos. The online page that I used to order the Tresos said they were for size 11 caps. I've recently done a bunch of searching of old posts here and found that the only difference between the 10s and 11s is the length of the cap - the diameter is the exact same. I have both (Remington), and that's what my experience confirms.

To be honest I haven't been able to tell much difference once the cap is on. Both jam occasionally, especially when my gun gets hot. I have, however, found a difference in putting the cap on the gun. I was doing it by hand - no problem with either size - but I found some posts about how one of our members had blown part of his finger off because a cap had fired while he was putting it on the gun. I like my fingers; they're some of my favorite body parts. So I bought a Traditions Field Capper. Yesterday I took it out to test it. It said it would hold both 10s and 11s, so I tried both. What I found was that because of manufacturing inconsistencies, not all of my 10s would fit into it. Some were just a tad longer than the others, and the tolerance in the capper was rather tight. I'm still trying to figure out what to do about that.

You might consider getting a container of 100 caps of each size, and trying them out for yourself. My understanding is that even when the guns are made by the same manufacturer, there are always slight variances. What works best for your gun may not be the same as for others. A lot of people swear by the Tresos brand nipples, but I'm pretty sure the same people will acknowledge that the guns may vary. Thus, this would be a relatively inexpensive test for you to find what works best - for *you.*
