Borders? Lets build a library!!
« on: June 27, 2007, 11:55:42 PM »
Lets make a library here on this site, of our favorite border stampings, etc. Could be a nice resource for when you dont want to do the same old thing again.
Also can be a good use for your scraps as you can save the borders you make for reference later.
Heres a few I like. DM

This sounds like a good idea to me. Here's the only good example of a border I have at this time. You have to make the stamp, but it may give you ideas on how to use stamps you already have. I'll put up more when I get good photos of them. This can be a continuing thread, so be sure to load the pictures using the "Additional Options" at the bottom of the new post page rather than linking to a photo somewhere online. If the online photo disappears, it also disappears from your posts. If we get enough examples, I can add a link in the How-To FAQ thread.

A little later: I remembered I had a couple samples kicking around my desk that I banged out one day to test a couple ideas. I scanned them in. Here they are, too.

I really like the second shot Marshall.  Transitions are the toughest part of holster tooling.  Most stamping tools lend themselves well to straight lines, such as belts, but the irregular shapes on holsters are tough to do with most of the intesting border tools.  Seems I am always looking through a magnifying glass at low quality pictures for ideas.

Heres one I spotted on an old saddle in a Wyoming antique store. Really like it, just havent tried to make it yet.
Update: While in Omaha I found a stamp that is close to this one, but not quite the same. Crafttool G870

I like that Dalton and think that an old duffer like me might even be able to copy it.  Thanks for the idea.

Look at Nolan Sacketts new pictures under the post 'A LIITLE LEATHER'.  He shows us how to capture a style with just a couple of tools.

Dang Dalton,
I had read this thread before I went CSG. If I'd have been able to connect it with you in my mind we'd have spent more time talking "Leather" at Louisville!

Here a couple of shots of my original 1880's Collins Morrison Saddle. I intend to try stamping a few projects in this style in the future. The Tandy stamps are a little different but I'll use what I have.

Marshall Will Wingam could you please "sticky" this thread?

I like the design work on that saddle, Pitspitr. Nice work.

I added this thread to the How-To FAQ/Suppliers/Ideas thread and renamed it slightly so others can find it easily without us having a sea of stickys at the top of the page. I had meant to do that but forgot. This is good information. Thanks for the suggestion.

Back in 1994 we got hold of a Cogashall saddle built in 1905 but the leather had worn out,so it had to berebuilt. We wanted to make it as close to the original as possible so we made a stamp to recreate the same border
This is it (the stamp is made from a car engine valve)

Looks good. I made one similar to it with a carriage bolt. I like the idea of using a valve to make a stamp. Thanks for the great idea. Now I can pester the repair shop for old valves. ;D

That will work too ;) Thanks!

I like the design work on that saddle, Pitspitr. Nice work.
Yep, the folks at Collins/Morrison did outstanding work that's part of the reason their work is so pricey today. I sure am glad this saddle was a gift from my dear old departed Father-in-law. I'd have never been able to afford what it's worth today. As far as either of us knew back when he gave it to me it was just his old work saddle and since he never used it anymore I might as well have it. When he gave it to me in the early 1980's he told me that it was almost 100 years old then and that he had bought it from the old boy who had had it custom made in Omaha.
