GAF active in the San Antonio area?
« on: October 09, 2022, 12:15:51 AM »
Topic pretty much says it.   I became aware of the existence of the GAF here on CAS City and have been trying to find out if there is any activity in the San Antonio-Austin area.  I've  inquired among the other Wild Bunch and CAS shooters I know in the area and no one seems to know anything.

Doc sends.

Some years back there was a Grand Muster (?) at Plum Creek.  I think a lot of those guys who were locals have quit shooting CAS.  Scooter is a member, plus Artiman (with the cannon) at Plum Creek.  Along with Cody Dixon categories, Plum Creek had a GAF category.  I think it was 1 revolver with a reload, and I forget what else.  I don't know that they have offered that lately, but you could ask.

Hi
I think the BEST bet is to get the guys who shoot at the Berger Sharpshooters to start shooting GAF at THEIR club.  They're in the process of moving though.  If memory serves Lost their lease.  Several of their members are in Nebrasky every June for the GAF Grand Muster.  That's about as far for you as for me (in Norman OK).

I'd love to shoot a match in Texas.  We've got a fair number of folks down there, be great if you could get together.  Bat is down there now as well.

Sorry. Both came up when I started typing your name and I couldn't remember which one is the one I was supposed to use.

The new Berger Sharpshooters range is much shorter than what we had at the old range.  We are limited to about 50 yards now.

Based on their website, I think they are already shooting there(?).  Unfortunately, they moved in the wrong direction from me.  I still have yet to make it up there.

Berger Sharpshooters are a bit far for me.  My wife is disabled which limits my ability to travel overnight. I have the same problem with the Texas Doughboys -- just too far away.  5-6 clubs within reasonable driving distance but no joy.

Most every SASS or NCOWS club has allowed me to set up/shoot a "Military" class.  One GAF spec rifle, one GAF spec revolver, cas spec loads, shoot their course of fire with GAF guns reloading as needed, ignore the shotgun targets.  Its fun and great practice, and folks notice and ask questions.  A Krag and a DA revolver get a lot of questions from the CAS crowd.  If you use a single shot like a trapdoor you  shoot half the rifle shots.  IE they shoot 10 you shoot 5.  (You shoot bullets twice as heavy after all)  My local SASS club now sets seperate targets out just for the GAF shooters, IE further back against the Berm.
Civilize them with a Krag . . .

Doc, did you ever talk to anyone at Plum Creek Shooting Society about GAF?  They've already got the Cody Dixon targets out there.  The current president is Brazos Bo.  The GAF category they offered may have pre-dated his time as a CAS shooter, so he might not be aware of it.  But since they do offer Cody Dixon at all matches and "Cowboy 1911" on their Sunday matches, they might be open to it.

Yes, I am in Texas but just for perspective my house in the panhandle is 500 Miles from the Grand Muster in Nebraska and over 600 miles from the Houston area where Troy is at.

Ahh, but Troy don't shoot at home.  The Berger Sharpshooters are much close to us Okies than to Houston.

You're right Mike, the Berger Sharpshooters are close by Texas standards, only about 400 miles away from me.

Yes, less than an hour away but the berms are way too short (about 20 yds) for a GAF match.

Man, that's even just about too short for a good NCOWS or Zoot match.

(I miss Zoot BTW)  :'(
