.30-40 Krag Unique or Red Dot Loads
« on: December 15, 2022, 05:26:34 PM »
Gentlemen, Does anyone have any reliable data for .30-40 Krag loads using a 220 grain cast bullet?  I love Trail Boss, but I can't get that right now, and not sure when I'll be able to.

Dale, I use 10.5 grns of unique with a 200 grn cast bullet in my krag. Works really well out to 100 yards.

Data I do not have... but I use 10 grains of promo, which is supposed to be the same as red dot.  That is what I shot at the grand muster... I decided on the 10 from "The Load" by Ed Harris (https://www.hensleygibbs.com/edharris/articles/The%20Load.htm).  I scaled it back to make sure I didn't hurt my krags... took it to the range and had a nice grouping to start, so I didnt play with it.  Some load work up might improve the group, but I was happy with what I had.  You do have to verify sight placement, but it worked well enough to land in 3rd for long range.

Here is the load data from Whiskey Double. It is from a Lyman book from the '70s.
