Title: Which cotton webbing for shotgun loops?
Post by: McCrower on December 03, 2019, 09:16:03 AM
I  tried to make cotton webbing loops for a new shotgun belt, but the loops seems to soft and floppy. The webbing is 1 inch wide and about 3/32 inch thick (2.2mm). Anyone who have experience with webbing loops?

Thanks

I've never dealt with cotton loops. That said, maybe you could stiffen the cotton with something. I've stiffened leather with Mop-N-Glow diluted about 10:1 with water. You may want to experiment with that on a scrap, though.

From your photos it looks like fabric store "webbing belting"?

you really need either a much tighter weave commercial type webbing, or thick tightly woven canvas.

perhaps something like this - the comments mention how stiff it is:

hope this helps

Howdy Professor,
Thank you for posting the link on webbing. The webbing from Amazon looks like the webbing I use for shotgun loops. I used to buy it from an Army Surplus store in SE Wisconsin. I would describe the stiffness of the webbing or feel as very similar to the web belts we were issued in the Army.

Greetings Johnny!

thanks for chiming in, that is exactly the kind of belt webbing I have used.

I also "used to" get it at Army Surplus stores. Unfortunately, those stores are getting rarer and rarer.

I had been searching in vain for very heavy webbing, 2 inches or wider. I am wanting to make civilian canvas gun belts and
civilian copies of the Fairweather-Christian Style Cartridge Belts.

I have one for .45 colt, and 12 ga shotshells, and I am still working on .45-70 rifle.

Then I stumbled across  the local thrift stores and got a half dozen heavy webbing Physical Therapy Belts!

I got insanely lucky , they had 72" plain white belts, and they are as stiff as heavy webbing load straps. I grabbed all they had
for about $3 a pop.

but then I still need to source the afformentioned 1" webbing for the loops.
