Thanks TK  :)
BTW... I added Stags to my SA 1911 and made American Holly for my Cimarron Rock Island.
Very happy with look.

as an aside I added a 27"-monitor to my laptop, what a difference.
My older laptop has a 18" and was adequate. But I enjoyed a larger dual screen at my work 20, and wanted to get back to that.
Its an LG 27" and is on sale @ Best Buy for $104.
Black Friday saving $$$ Comp. Value: $249.99

Quote from: The Trinity Kid on December 16, 2025, 04:56:07 PMI'm about to take 2 weeks off for Christmas starting at the end of the week. I think of of the projects I might tackle is refinishing the grips on my Philippine 1911. I'm not a huge fan of the lacquer finish it came with, but the wood has a nice grain and color: I'm guessing mahogany. I imagine a few coats of hand rubbed linseed oil would be an improvement. Worst case scenario, I don't like the result and have an excuse to buy some staghorn grips. ::)

Dang kids, it ain't lacquer, just some cheap poly. Dang kids think any shiny finish is lacquer.   ::)

It feels more like lacquer than poly. Whatever it is, it's at least a step up from the red spray paint on my rough rider 22. That was Rosewood. I did a 15 coat raw linseed oil finish on that one, and it turned out very nice.

Good evening all, been a bit since I came by. Johnny, great news on coming home. Roger, the wedding pics were great [PS the 1911 looks really good].

Hit 58 today and overcast/drizzling all day, but it was warm enough to run the Kia through the carwash and it looks much better. Still getting over the last vestiges of whatever virus I picked up last week. LadyC is still pretty sick, but got three series of medication today. Gonna pick up my g'nephew Lucas tomorrow and run him to the thrift store, as he is growing like a weed! Crud the boy is 13 and has grown 7" and 30+ pounds since April! Gonna get him some pants that we know he's gonna outgrow and a couple pairs he can grow into. Hopefully tomorrow I can make myself put a little Christmas train together for decoration.

Merry Christmas to you all.

I doubt you've ever seen real lacquer at your age unless it was on a GM car at least as old as me with original paint.  ;D Been a lot of cheap finish people call lacquer but trust me, real lacquer is not cheap. BTW the automotive type was invented to use up surplus WWI smokeless powder and can go boom while applying it.  ;D  Google DuPont Duco.   ;)  Beautiful stuff to work with and work you will.

'Tis 38 and overcast. Snow is melting. "Light rain in the morning then light rain likely in the afternoon. Light snow also possible in the afternoon. Little or no snow accumulation. Highs in the lower 40s. Temperatures falling into the upper 20s in the afternoon. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation near 100 percent."

Good afternoon folks, 60 and raining here in Central Arkansas. My Missus is feeling a little better, wanted McDonald's for lunch so I got her some and she said it tasted good to her. Had a nice visit with Roger this morning, which was a nice surprise. Got a few errands this afternoon and gonna try to get a couple Christmas jobs done.
God bless

Whatever the crap on this gun is, it's coming off tomorrow, to be replaced by linseed oil.

If you have not used the boiled linseed oil yet.
Might I suggest Skidmore's Wood restorer.

I have used it now exclusively for many years with fine results.
No mess and just the bee's Knees for finishing new or even refinishing striped wood.
I had used it on the NEW Dupage Garand stock and this 130 year old wood.

I know there is some good stuff out there that is easier and looks very good. But to paraphrase Ranger Doug from Riders in the Sky, "It's the easy way but it's not the cowboy way."  ;D

Morning all.

45 and rainy this morning.

I made a post yesterday on here, but I don't see it. Rather confusing. Anyway, I got the grips sanded yesterday. Whatever the finish was, it took a bit of elbow grease to get off, using 120 grit sandpaper wrapped around a flat file. With the old finish off, the grain was actually rather open, even after sanding with 220 grit, so now I'm sanding in the oil finish. First coat was linseed oil cut 50/50 with mineral spirits and wet sanded at 400 grit. I'll probably do one more coat with 400, then move to 3-4 coats of 600 grit. Then I'll finish with a couple coats of plain oil rubbed by hand.

Even after just one coat, the grain of the wood is much more contrasted and it's already a major improvement.

I still can't figure out how to post pictures from my magical technology pocket rectangle, but I'll keep trying.

Woops, I should have told you to use a scraper, the stuff is hard but doesn't really adhere well. ;)  One reason it looks like shit after a little hard use.  I did my Sharps in about an hour that way.

As for the post, the net has been a bit wanky lately.  Likely due to solar stores.

Got some Andula sausage the other day, not the local made I wanted though. Forgot to hit the Lincoln one the other day and the other was out when I was there.  Got red beans to cook today.  Will make rice when I cook something and have broth.  I found out I like red beans and rice when it's not that window food kinds or heat up that Rita used to get.  ::)
