Title: Borders? Lets build a library!!
Post by: Dalton Masterson on June 27, 2007, 11:55:42 PM
Lets make a library here on this site, of our favorite border stampings, etc. Could be a nice resource for when you dont want to do the same old thing again.
Also can be a good use for your scraps as you can save the borders you make for reference later.
Heres a few I like. DM

This sounds like a good idea to me. Here's the only good example of a border I have at this time. You have to make the stamp, but it may give you ideas on how to use stamps you already have. I'll put up more when I get good photos of them. This can be a continuing thread, so be sure to load the pictures using the "Additional Options" at the bottom of the new post page rather than linking to a photo somewhere online. If the online photo disappears, it also disappears from your posts. If we get enough examples, I can add a link in the How-To FAQ thread.

A little later: I remembered I had a couple samples kicking around my desk that I banged out one day to test a couple ideas. I scanned them in. Here they are, too.

I really like the second shot Marshall.  Transitions are the toughest part of holster tooling.  Most stamping tools lend themselves well to straight lines, such as belts, but the irregular shapes on holsters are tough to do with most of the intesting border tools.  Seems I am always looking through a magnifying glass at low quality pictures for ideas.

Heres one I spotted on an old saddle in a Wyoming antique store. Really like it, just havent tried to make it yet.
Update: While in Omaha I found a stamp that is close to this one, but not quite the same. Crafttool G870

Dang Dalton,
I had read this thread before I went CSG. If I'd have been able to connect it with you in my mind we'd have spent more time talking "Leather" at Louisville!

Here a couple of shots of my original 1880's Collins Morrison Saddle. I intend to try stamping a few projects in this style in the future. The Tandy stamps are a little different but I'll use what I have.

I like the design work on that saddle, Pitspitr. Nice work.

I added this thread to the How-To FAQ/Suppliers/Ideas thread and renamed it slightly so others can find it easily without us having a sea of stickys at the top of the page. I had meant to do that but forgot. This is good information. Thanks for the suggestion.

Back in 1994 we got hold of a Cogashall saddle built in 1905 but the leather had worn out,so it had to berebuilt. We wanted to make it as close to the original as possible so we made a stamp to recreate the same border
This is it (the stamp is made from a car engine valve)

That will work too ;) Thanks!

I like the design work on that saddle, Pitspitr. Nice work.
Yep, the folks at Collins/Morrison did outstanding work that's part of the reason their work is so pricey today. I sure am glad this saddle was a gift from my dear old departed Father-in-law. I'd have never been able to afford what it's worth today. As far as either of us knew back when he gave it to me it was just his old work saddle and since he never used it anymore I might as well have it. When he gave it to me in the early 1980's he told me that it was almost 100 years old then and that he had bought it from the old boy who had had it custom made in Omaha.

Horsepen, I Think that You did a AWESOME job :o And I love the flow of the border and the lines, at first from a distanve I thought that you did a double stitch, but correct me if I am wrong, you just did a stich groove and then run the stich overwheel in the grove as if you were going to stitch? The flow of the flavors of stamps are very taste full not just the border but the whole holster!
Horespen, isn't there a full pic of that holster posted on here? If there is point me to it, I been looking and can't find it! I want to see it (Please)

I'm glad y'all enjoyed it. This is an unfinished holster that is still laid out flat.

Ace, your right about the groove and stitch wheel design. That outside one I'll sew up for the main seam. I'll get a picture on the show yer stuff thread when I get 'er done. Maybe I can get a picture of it while it's still flat if ya like. You fellas have anymore borders for this library?

I would be greatfull if you could post a pic of it , even if it is flat I don't care, I can't put my finger on it,  the Design of it is intreging, the border the rossette and other stamp combo's realy flow toghter, and i would like to see a full image of it! i do not know what it is that attacks me to see it, except the concept of the border and the types of stamps used toghter just does something for me! :o 8) 8) :)

Hey there ya'll. Well, while this is not really a border, per se, it can be used as filler in a border, I guess. I found the instructions for it online (I forget where  :-\) and it's actually really simple.

I call it Fraugahyde, but you can call it a mess if you like.

The internal body of the design is the fraugahyde.

And I guess I just had to use it on my straps.

The idea is to take a large seeder, and line out where you would see "veins" or the large bumps. Then you take an intermediate size seeder, and run it down a couple of the edges of the larger seeder, and then use a dramatically smaller seeder (lightly) to fill in the area. It would drive you nuts on a saddle, I'd bet, but when all is said and done, looks pretty decent as filler, even with someone as poor as me working the leather. LOL.

Nice, RT. I like the use of the three different sized seeders to make an interesting filler/background pattern. Fraugahide. Good idea, it really does the trick. Nice work, too. Thanks for posting the pics.
Title: Re: Borders? Lets build a library!!
Post by: RollingThunder on July 03, 2008, 07:14:55 PM
Thanks. It's really easy to make, and like you said, some conchos are really well supported by the Fraugahyde as a design. Those conchos, by the way, are from Buffalo Brothers. They have a really nice selection there.

I'm glad you all like them, and I hope someone can find this technique useful. I did, so I figured why not pass it on. :D

I always thought it was pretty fun to combine different seeders, veiners and cammies to get something different. I used two different cammies alternately and seeded the larger one for these.

Here's another one I played with. It's the double meander pattern with some different stamps along the inside border.

A few hours later: I noticed that the lighting on the thing made it look like a reverse image so I rotated it over to look like it's correct, which it is but the scanner didn't get the lighting right. ;D

I like it too, what stamp did you use for your wing shaped stamp that runs into the flower, this is really nice , it's some what like WC stamp that he used on his knife sheath, but a little larger, this is a real classy look, and your stamping looks to be perfect, this is a nice addition to the Library, maybe you could get WC's knife sheath and post it here to so we could have a comparison of the two designs. 10W, that stamp is a meander stamp I made years ago. The first stamp I ever made, actually. I copied it from one Charlie Miller made. I just used the side of it and held it at an angle, advancing a little for each tap. Here's the meander:

Wow thats hard to believe that you could get that kind of impression from this meander stamp, all I can say is you have a really steady hand, and to be able to place that stamp as you did and get these results is really something, the fact that you made such a neat meander is pretty special too, WLL DONE Pard, thanks for the explanation.

Thanks, Ace. I's good to get inspired to make your own. It adds a dimension to your work that can't be found otherwise. The double meander I posted is one I made. Another pair of them I made are on the fern pattern on the right holster of my outlaw rig. The border on my Dodge City holster is another example. Most of my holsters have at least one stamp I've made. You've seen some, it just isn't always obvious.

Typically, you cut the pattern outline with a swivel knife then start adding different layers of stamps to the pattern to make it look three dimensional. The stamps are used with a small rawhide, plastic or wooden mallet when the leather is "cased" or wetted to a still firm degree. There are some good books and videos available for learning this from leather suppliers like Tandy, Hide Crafters and/or some of the pards that post here, like Chuck, WC, Will and several others. WC posted a great illustration of the order it's typically done: http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php?topic=22118.0 (http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php?topic=22118.0).

OK, who has videos or books available or who knows of some to recommend?

Thanks Marshall, I assume from the use of a mallet that the stamps are made of metal, similar to a punch, and commercially available?? I also assume some of you make your own stamps for new patterns??

Yes to both. You can find 'em on ebay, too. Just do a search for leather stamps.

RT, those are classic old timey cuffs. I like them a lot and I appreciate you showing them here. I have now found a pair of cuffs that have given me inspiration for making my own.

Don 101, what tools did you use for the border above. Those little dots along the inside and outside are a nice touch.

Check out mill bits and the like. A little grind here a cut there... I had a mill bit for years that worked great for a bizarre Celtic weave pattern. There are also a lot of Dremel metal bits that work well to for small corner fill.

I just thought I would add another border idea I completed on my new gun belt. It's still a work in progress but the border stamping is done.

Looks good. I wouldn't have thought of using the star stamp like that but it works nicely. Thanks for the pic.

This has got to be one of the best threads.  Don't get me wrong, I always get fresh ideas when I thumb through my Al Stholman books but I love to see what other people think up and there are some killer combinations here.  Great work!

It's been quite a while for this thread. I'm resurrecting it with a photo of one of my recent holsters with a very simple and effective border on it.

That was done with a tool I made years ago.

The photo makes it look like I drag the tool but it actually is used by pushing it.

Let's see some more borders, pards.

Love it Marshal. I recently tried to use a similar tool and can't seem to get it lined up enough to really do what I want to do. It's the craftool pro adjustable creaser thought and while I can get it to do good for making a single line with one part off the leather I cannot get it to work right to do two lines both on leather........if that makes sense.

Thanks, Rube. You need to put your finger on top to push down on the tool as you push forward. Then rock it ever so slightly so it walks forward slowly. Unlike the adjustable creasers I've seen, mine has sharp edges that crease the leather almost like a knife.

Hi
I took several pictures of belt borders for a thread on Skidmore's leather cream and thought that the pictures could be helpful here.  I have several hourglass or double serpentine stamps from both Barry King and Tandy.  As a hint, when you pick the sizes you like, buy one from Barry King, they last a LOT longer.  Anyway, I've used both the Hourglass picture in the first attachment.  It looks good, but it is necessary (in my opinion) to draw lines on the leather as a stamp guide.  I'm an engineer, I measure things (except booze...).  I use soft lead pencils, drawing with the side so as not to leave a divot.

On the Hourglass in the second attachment, I obviously used red markers which I read ARE SUPPOSED TO BE INVISIBLE, but they're not, so back to the soft lead pencil.

The hourglass is more interesting, but more of a pain to stamp.  with the single serpentine stamps, I just draw the outer guidelines and stamp with just a hair between the stamps.  Literally, just enough to see a separation.  I do 12 on the inside (both sides of the belt, and then the outside) so I don't have the whole belt wet at the same time.

Hi

This is a picture of the 4 new Barry King stamps I just purchased.  All four of the tools are very well made.  They are a Camouflage, Starburst #1,  Crown Serpentine #5, a Double Row Border #3, and a Lined Veiner #1 to match Rube's.

The Crown Serpentine #5 is HUGE.  It is made so that you could (I think) easily just draw a line to guide it's stamping.  Due to the double line through out that tool, it's not really possible to leave space between the stamps and use a molding tool or some other tool to connect the stamps.  I believe that I have one of each size of serpentine border tools (Barry King and Tandy).

The Camouflage Starburst border is an odd looking thing.  I will probably use it between to border lines about a half inch apart.  It might also be used for a weird Psychedelic era plant connected by vines.

The Double Row Border #3 is more precisely detailed that Tandy's, but looks very similar.  I expect to use it quite a bit.

The Lined Veiner #1 will get a lot of use as another way to build a 3:10 to Yuma border.  I'll also try what Rube did and that is also in Packing Iron.

If there's a better place for this than the border library, feel free to move this.

Merry Xmas Y'all.
