Made some Bullets!!
« on: April 30, 2022, 06:55:17 PM »
Today I made my 2nd attempt at casting, and I'd have to say it was a success! Since my last attempt, I read some stuff and got some stuff, because stuff makes things happen, right? One of the things I got was a hot plate to heat the mold. Worked great! The mold I tried today is an Accurate mold, 51-350CL. The lead is from RMR, the little bullet cores rated about 10BH. Couple weeks ago my wife brings home a garage sale item, a little pot with a heating coil in it that the guy used to make fishing sinkers with. Wasn't real thrilled but when the wife brings home gifts, I smile and give it a try. And much to my surprise it worked real well. Hot plate worked real well too. So I dumped a few handfuls of bullet cores in and in just a few minutes I had lead ready to poor. Got a new wooded mallet as part of my stuff gathering and it functioned flawlessly. In a short time I have 52 new 50/95 bullets ready to size and lube.
Looks like the 1st batch of lead were ingots left over from the 1st attempt.

I believe I have to find a mold for the 45/75!

Forgot to mention, the size of the bullets measured between .515-.519, the majority that I measured being .516. And I weighed 6, they were 353-355gr.

That mold was the first one I tried in My Uberti .50 cal. '76, never had much luck with it at 100 yds. The 1 -48" twist they used seemed too fast for these short bullets. I went to a longer (heavier) bullet and got much better results.

515141 Lyman-Ideal, 450 grain. Kind of hard to find but they do come up. Also that mold does have the large lube grooves for black powder. Combined with a tang sight it is very qualified for 100 yds plus shooting. A .030" poly wad helps also.

Interesting... The .515141 was meant for the .50-70 Gov't. BUT, if it works, great! Generally heavier bullets work better in faster twist rifling. Don't recall what the barrels for the M1868 Springfield and M1869 Sharps Carbine cartridge conversions had versus the twist in the M1876 Winchester, but, again, if it works, fine!

Whoops! my mistake! #512138 is the mold I have had the best results with, it does have the flat nose and is 430 gr.
The #512141 is indeed for the 50-70 and has the pointed nose. I should of run out to the shop to look first!

I’ve used these in my Chaparral (1:48 twist) and they were quite accurate although the hit 12 inches lower than my standard POI:

Had to hold on the crossbar with the rear sight folded down to hit the plate.

I need to do some measuring of the bullets I used at the Big Bore Shoot in Cody Wy, the 45-75 bullets worked perfectly. Time to get a bullet mold, as I’m almost out of the bullets I purchased.
