Titewad for cowboy 12 ga.
« on: April 04, 2024, 10:29:32 PM »
Howdy Fellers,

Since we all are still having to make do with powders that we can find, I was wondering if any of our cowpokes are using Hodgdon's Titewad for their 12 ga. loads? Specifically in Rem.STS or Win. AA hulls? If you're willing to get really finite, what MEC powder bushing are you using for 7/8th loads?

Rev. Chase

    • What wads do you have, that will make a difference?
    • At the low pressures you probably want the primers are not that important
    • I have some Clay Buster WAA12L grey wads that I used for my daughter
    • I looked up the load and we were actually using the powder data for a 3/4 ounce load  (only 15.0grns) which you can get away with since you really don't want a pattern (you're probably shooting less than 10 yards) and the 7/8 ounces knocks the targets over (sometimes barely) but it is low pressure and soft shooting
    • I use an adjustable charge bar but the bushing chart for 15.0grns of tightwad is a 21
    • you can also consider moving up to 1 ounce and loading to 7/8 powder data, makes a low recoil, low velocity load

Knocking over steel requires a Moment, not Energy.  Mass times Velocity  is Momentum.  Energy is Mass times Velocity squared.  For energy velocity is the heavier factor.  So more mass at a lower velocity will knock the stop plates down as well as a lower mass at a higher velocity and a faster recoil impulse.  Think "slow push" instead of "fast pop".  Less blast too.

But take all of this with a grain of salt and consult the manufacturers data (I'm not a Ballistician, I just play one on TV) .  You can look up the load data online on Hodgdons site. and if you don't have a bushing chart handy look on the MEC sit, I think they have them as downloads.

Well, that part was true but really isn't any more.  I'm seeing LOTS of suitable powders, including dual purpose shotgun/cartridge powders.  It's just that they have gone way up in price!  Not as much as primers, but a lot.  Hodgdon probably the least so, good for them.  But the others...whew!  But if you already have the Titewad, load on!

Also be aware that wads can change the pressure profile.

I always used the win aaa trap wads becuase they were available, cheap, and worked fine with all my loads of unique.

With shortages i grabbed a bag of whatever was available, and found that some were “tighter” than the aaa,
So set them aside for later or cut off the petals to use as “wad only” like using a cork wad. Usually but not always, reducing the shot
Or powder can get you into safe pressures, but one REALLY wants to research carefully from the shotgun forums where those guys
Send loads off to be pressure tested. Shotguns can “pop” too easily and i still like my face.

Or worse case, use old timey wads and BP.

Well...since someone else's load of Titewad powder depends on what wad they're using, which may be different than the Reverend's wad...your response was spot on.

Well thanks fellas,

Good info. I have some WAA12L wads and some WAASL wads (I have been suing those with clays). It sounds like I may invest in a big jug of Titewad.

I appreciate the help,
Rev. Chase

ps: I like my face, too, but I have never seen the Professor's face so I really don't have an opinion.
