Actually I was. 6'3" tall and 270 pounds, bench pressed my own weight and willing to fight. Maximum Security Prison hired me...

I took one of those once. It said I was from New England. Which also is not even close. The last generation in my family to be “from” New England immigrated from Prussia in 1861, and only lived there for about 2 years before heading to the Carolinas/Florida for the next century.

On todays docket, I am taking a ride on one of our planes. No particular reason for it, they just offered and I wouldn’t refuse a couple hours of flight time.  ::)

No Sir, I didn't save it, but Googled key words in my search engine and found several others like it.
So, I passed some time with this one https://www.zoo.com/quiz/where-are-you-from-accent

It was a little more accurate and guessed "the South"  :-\  eh?, closer I guess.
I think I'm a melting pot mix, a kit bash... Folks were from Kentucky & Western NC, but I was born & raised in Miami, and most of the school kids I interacted with were from elsewhere.

Not sure we are going to get any heavy weather, from the Tropical Storm, so far rain has held off.
Overcast, and guessers say 90% but zilch so far.

"SHE" tested negative yesterday;  :D :D :D :D
the assumption is I am now also negative.
All symptoms have retreated, with the exception of some head congestion and a throat clearing mild cough,
from time to time.
Hopefully, I now have an acquired immunity that rebolstered the boosters I got last Fall.  :-\
I expect to take a Covid test tomorrow to confirm, and return Wednesday to the Museum, if I'm negative.

Today we remember, with honor & reverence the Great Crusade D-Day: 78 years ago.
God Bless the Men & Women of our Greatest Generation, and bless their memory & their sacrifice.

Good to see you Roo... :)

I'm familiar with RC & a Moon Pie...just never developed a taste for it...
course I drink UN-Sweet iced tea, I suppose that's odd to a southerner  :-\
Don't care for any of the flavored tea either.

I was, in my youth a 'Pepper (Dr. Pepper)
But I haven't had a 'Pepper' or 'Coke' in years. Goober's in Ice Cream, but not Coke.

BBQ Loin & sweet potato was excellent, and enough leftover BBQ for sandwiches tomorrow.

Thunderstorm past through and drop temps about 15 degrees, still drizzling now.

Evening all.

I like my tea sweet enough to kill a dietician  ::). I’ve also been known to indulge in an RC and moon pie.

Todays agenda is rather uneventful. Hand out tools and go to a brief in a couple hours. Flight on Saturday went well. 15 hours in the plane, but the Joes down south at a few FOBs got their mail and some treats from the USO.

If we start from the South, had relatives in Huntsville AL on my mom’s father’s side:

Cousins down there (don’t know first, second …… or how many removals:

   Named Frankie and Bubba

Next toward the North would be relatives from both sides.  First in Vandalia IL. Then a tad more North to Altoona PA.  Both were county rather that city folk, so there was a detectable accent.

After that most of the clan moved to Southern WI and Southwest MI.  No accent to me.

I guess if I speak with an accent, it must be MUTT.

Coke meant Coca Cola, not just any soda.  (Have had a person in Mississippi ask me what flavor coke I wanted, long before all the cola soft drinks were coming in oddball flavors).

I liked root beer, we used to have Royal Castle, it was south Florida chain.
something of a White Castle and Chrystal Burger clone...
Anyway, they had Birch Beer, 5 cents in a frosted mug, the little sq. burgers (cooked with onions & a pickle)
for dime.
I'd get 3, and mug for 35 cents :) didn't get better than that as kid.
They are all gone now, the likes of Burger King, McD's were RC's ruination, and the fact that the corp. head embezzled.
But that frosted Birch Beer was a treat, and those little burgers.  :)

Coke too, never tasted better unless it was in one of the little 8oz green glass bottles.

Memories of youth, :) remember Clark Bars, & Baby Ruths's?
How about the little wax bottles of sweet colored liquid or maybe candy cigarettes?

Major 2,
there is a large candy store/manufacture on the highway between Omaha and Lincoln, Baker's Candies, that has a huge selection of all those nostalgia candies and sweets.
Necco wafers, the color sugar dots on paper, those miniature wax soda bottles filled with sugar water, etc.
Let me know what you might be interested in.

Very Kind of you John  :)

These days I tend to shy away from sugar  :(  once in a while though I find Cracker Barrel Restaurants
have the old brands.
Like Lemon Drops hard candys, and Clark bars.
They also carry Soft Drinks , like Sarsaparilla and Grape & Orange Nehi.
One can also find about all the nostalgic brands on Amazon.

Oh!  just recall another favorite, Peanut Butter Log...
Butterfingers & Hershey Bars (plain or Almond) are still easy to find most places.
and Red Hots, little red globs of Cinnamon goodness....

Ah... those were the days, ran ruck shod all over, armed with all manors of Mattel's, Nichols cowboy guns
or a Daisy BB gun. Perhaps it was a Burp Gun, no one blinked an eye.
We were barefoot, drank water from hose, climbed trees, skinned a knee and even played in the standing water after rainstorm, and street football.
We rode our bikes to school, said the pledge of allegiance and prayer each day....

Not a soap box, just great memories of a time now lost to Kids today  :'(

I'm headed to the frendly LGS to pick up a project in the morning, for one of their customers.
I'll post more about it tomorrow with photos.

You all might recall, some weeks ago I was asked by my friendly LGS, to look and appraise 3 guns the previous owner/ consigner had rattled caned painted black.
There was the Ruby, a WALTHER P38 with post war AC44 Holster and 2 mags, and a Model 1 1/2 S&W top break in 32 cal.
All three had been painted in semi-Gloss black,
I estimated the P38 would bring about $500 , the Ruby maybe ? ( well I took a chance for $100 )
and it turned out a small gem in the rough....about 70% original finish and functions fine..
Once I removed the offending Krylon paint job...
The poor Smith I fear is a train wreak .

I was asked by the new owner of the P38 ( yes it sold for $500) if I would restore  the P38
I agreed to do so for $35 (he gave me $50 for about 45 minutes work  :) )

So here is P38, sadly the original finish had been stripped before the rattle can job  ::)
It is a good shooter grade, matching #s and waffen marks... but in its less the 10% original  finish
sill worth the $500 I guess...

Before and After

Deke, it still languishes there un-loved at the gun shop on consignment.
I handled it, seems tight, the original hard rubber grips are cracked.

Anyway, gotta mail off a Walther PP today, trading for an Uberti Opentop. Already 87 here on it's way to 95 with "air you can wear" humidity. Y'all be good.

96 and clear here in Africa as of 0330 local. Not much going on in this part of the Dark Continent. Though the chow hall has chicken strips for lunch today, so I guess we have that going for us.

88 here already, heading to 95 with a Heat Index of 114, yikes. Found out I have to get the front wheel bearings replaced on my truck, so it's parked until the parts [backordered] come in. Had a great couple of days as our [former] Sister in Law and her new husband came in. Great visit her kids came over and we cooked out. Ya know, running a grill at 95 degrees may not be the smartest thing I have ever done... ;D

Talked to Del. on the way in, he said he gets out of the care facility next Friday, Otherwise feeling good...

Greetings all.

Nice and toasty here in the Dark Continent.  104 with a heat index of 125 :o we also had a mild thunderstorm around midnight, followed by a dust storm. Made life fun for about an hour.

Beyond that, the life of this deployed airman has been fairly quiet. Getting paid to read books all day. Could be worse.

Have a safe trip, and good a muster watch that heat.

Guessers say, "no rain and just 88° today", I find it hard to believe.
Yesterday they said " 5% rain " and after the thunderstorm they said "80% rain", their enlightened hindsight was 100%.

Our 35th is coming up September 12th.  My keeper (in more ways than one ::) ::) ;D) is 5 months older than me.  It just took a 2000-mile-long distance final courtship to convince her.

Right now, she’s getting packed up and making sure I have my plant care instructions set. Before she goes back to Milwaukee for her mother’s 96th birthday (by the way her mother was out yesterday cutting down trees in her backyard).  The wife will be gone for 6 weeks, so the cats and I get to party!!!! ::) ::) ::)

I have new student (Antropoligy major) intern joining me at the Museum today.
We will be working on WW 1 & WW 2 exhibits rehab, adding and representing the existing displays over the next few weeks.

Guessers were on point; it was rather present Temp wise yesterday @ 88 ° and they say today will be the same and no rain predicted.

A  very good friends grandson is in need of help. I got this note from her.

"He just turned 18. He was born with half a heart. Has had 3 open heart surgeries. He was told about 2 weeks ago that he was going to need a pace maker, but he doesn't have the part of the chamber that you normally connect it to, so they were assembling a team in Birmingham to figure it out. Yesterday the heat got to him so they took him to the ER where they found he was in A fib and low Oxygen so they transferred him to Mobile.

He was airlifted to Birmingham this afternoon. Johnathon arrived safely to Birmingham.Doctor's called and requested to do a cardiac conversion ASAP, they are going to incubate him."

Update From my friend...

Johnathon is in Room 830 at The Children's Hospital of Birmingham 1600 5th Avenue South Birmingham, Al 35242. Drs are attempting to keep his oxygen saturation level. This weekend the plan is to keep him resting since the cardioversion to bring him out of A fib. On Monday, they will determine if he is strong enough for the open heart surgery that week to install a pacemaker. If successful, he will need to stay another week or so. Best case scenario. Please get the word out to anyone who believes in the power of prayer and healing. Thank you.

OK, escaped about 12:30pm, the care they gave me was awesome, all the caregivers have been telling me goodbye for the last two days. they said I was one of the best patients they have had in a long time.  I guess it just shows if you are nice to people they are more likely  are nice to you.

If my typing looks more like some HS kids text It will get better, you should see some of the stuff 30 days ago.  Of course I'm not on as many drugs as I was and a real keyboard is easier to work with, was going to have the kids bring my desktop out and then decided not to, A lot of the problems were more than a tiny key board.

Anyway we went and got my meds or rather the additional ones, which is temp and is a pain killer, new on to me, only been on the market since 2015, save that till tomorrow, but lets say for me it worked works better than The Codeine/Tylenol ones with more advantages and almost as good an morphine.  Buprenorphine is the name if you want to look it up.  They sent me some home.

Any way back to what happened, on Saturday the 6th of May I didn't feel real hot, Rita went of craft thing ar church and me and brown dog slept most the the day, Fever went 102.5.  temp was dowm Sunday and went an seen mom on the 7th,felt worse again on Sunday and about 10pm I hurt so bad I could hardly walk, and Rita took me to the OR, I knew they would do little but that's fine because I was in a lot of pain and used my cane to hobble in.  Quick x-ray of the hip area  showed nothin was broke or misplaced, called my GP the next day, got an appointment for the early afternoon, no big deal as I had enough happy pills to make it, although I upped the dosage to max recommended having dealt with both before. Didn't do much that day and about 2 pm I was out talking to Rita and I sat on the couch, maybe a half hour.  Got ready to go back and lay down and I could not get up, using my cane and Rita I could not get up, called my GP and they said if it was that bad call 911 and he told me to go to another hospital, He's CHI so went to that one and he called to see if a certain neurologist was still on duty, cool a heads up before, Ambulance  cuts out waiting time any way, nerve DR was not on duty so they gave me more muscle relaxers and told me to go see the GP next day as planned.

Anyway next morning when I awoke I could not move my legs, just wiggle my toes so I decided my spinal cord was at least mostly in tact. ::)  Rita sent the dog outside and called 911, told the Rita would be at the front door and dog was outside.  4 showed up and they had a weird looking chair kinda like and office chair with seat belts and all 4 picked me up and put me on it, go me down they stairs and on to a gurney that had a tarp with handles.  Oh Rita asked if I was going back the St E I told her no, Bryan East again, my normal one, she said OK, then I told her I couldn't go back there because I had peed all over the floor.  (another story for later  ::))

Anyway the got me in there and was in pain as bad as the bypass, so since thy had an I"V already and  and blood drawn and the fever again they gave me several shots in the I"V, morphine, that above med, toradol and a muscle relaxer because  they had found out I had bad swelling in the back muscles on that side, they ten told me they were going to give me a shot of prednisone to help that, I mentioned the diabetes and they said not to worry, they had plenty of insulin and cold get more. ;D  Any way they drew lots of blood, and sent me upstairs and they kept asking if a was still in bad pain, then shot m up some more. Had a staph infection in my blood, and in my lower spine which swelled the muscles  and they were pushing hard in the siliac nerve and was pinching it off.  They also told me there was a slight chance I would never be able to walk again,  Anyway for several days I was kinda in a haze, don't remember a lot of it and what I remember not sure all of it was real.

The whole time I could only wiggle my toes and by the 16th I was able using 2 nurse and a walker I waked 5 or 6 steps to the bathroom before that thy took me in a shower chair you could poop out of.

The 17th of May they took me a half mile up the road to Tabatha a rehab place,  we started doing rehab and drugs but less of them, and after a few days we didn't have to do insulin.  They changed some meds just before this and they added one one and dropped 2, this pill works for diabetes and helps the heart heal.  Glucose as been smack on for at least two weeks and I got things like cheese cake and stuff on my tray and no extra insulin.  Walking got better, but I also worked my butt off doing it.

Also had to have speech therapy, the tests showed no stroke but some bad speech problems as Slim and Major 2 found out, did work on that, part of that also to determine if my problems with memory was long term, short term or both. Was only short term, they asked about hobbies, showed the pictures on the phone so they started asking question questions about that and they discovered my long term was exceptional it was just the short term and it's getting better.   After a while the dropped it to only one person person had to be with me. made bathroom trips easier, 3 people was bit crowded.  Then I could walk around the room with out help, then dropped it all together just one holding my leash and then I could wander the halls by my self, then get to go home today, the 24th of June.

Got 10 pound lifting restriction for now .  Got appointments coming up, project tomorrow is to get the E-mail password fixed so I can find out when they are, didn't write them down because they E-mail that stuff.

We are sure I have a fairly bad Hiatal hernia going on, got appointment July 1 coming to do the scope from the other end from one I did in March.

Food was decent, not exactly 4 star dining but better than window food in a sack, Middle range, think Grocery store cafeteria type.  Yes had a student  nurse take me for a wheel chair walk around the campus we saw Sysco the truck delivering.

Most of their product is decent heat and eat stuff

Gonna stop for now, took me over 2 hours to do this, fingers don't always do what the brain tells them to.

WELCOME HOME, DEL :D

Heading to the Museum, just normal Saturday, heat could/should bring a crowd, (heat index 100+)
but I'm thinking it will be a slow day.  :-\
It's been hit and miss, Wednesday (hump day) I was quite busy, but my counterpart/curator said Thur. & Fri. were slow including the Thursday pre-scheduled Eagle Scout Unit tour no showed.
Apparently, their transportation expired due to the heat.  :-\

I did manage to dress & equip out a pair of WW2 German uniformed mannequins.
And drew up the plans for an all-new WW1 exhibit area, which will include a trench experience walk through.

Any who, you all stay hydrated and in a cool zone, and wishing the pards at the Muster good weather.

Brown Butthead dog was so glad to see me, took a 3 hour nap and clung to me was not happy with me last night, kept staring at me from the coach and sometimes going to the door, flipped me off and slept on the coach last night and won't look at me.  Well too bad buddy. got the home heath nurse coming in about 8:30 and it's off to the bedroom for you.  And also just the two of us till after dark.

Evening all.

85 and muggy at 0200 in Africa today.

Del, glad to see you’re still on the plucking side of the daisy patch,  ::)

In other news, I’ve taken on a new project in my journey as an author. I’ve begun work on a new book about the 2018 Carr Fire in Redding, CA. I was very involved in that incident, as a resident, first responder, and knowing many people that lost homes and businesses. I want to create a critical record of it all, covering all facets of the fire. I especially am wanting to touch on the fatalities that occurred, as pre-research they all appear to be preventable. In any case, that’s what I’m getting started on. I hope to get in contact with John N MacLean, who has written several books about fires (his father Norman also wrote several books, including A River Runs Through It), as well as being a fellow Missoulian.

I'm up, a good chance of not doing much today, got a pan and a few dishes that need done, will do them while wife is gone, maybe will get a gold star.  Some laundry needs done am forbidden by the powers to do it or at least do it when no one is home, something about basement stairs, probably would be fine but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,   There is a stack of papers about 4 inches tall on the chair by my desk I need to go through and decide what is what, most likely not needed, several giving them permission to take pictures of things like bruises, rashes and such.   Was a lot of bruising and such when I arrived at rehab hospital from blood draws and moving IV's around because with antibiotics they don't last long, inside the arms was looking like one big bruise from wrist to elbows.  Day I left they finally put in a pict line above the elbow in the right side.  That developed a rash all around it, was not sure if it was tape, antibiotic allergy or what, also had one on the back of the top of my butt, in the plumber crack region and then on my shoulders.   They changed the bedding and put a notice about only using sheets washed in Ivory, guess they was some in house as well as patients laundry if they want, no charge, of course I did. ;D

Sheets took care of that one, shoulders they removed the pain patches and went back to tablets and all heal.  Pict line area never went away till after it was pulled when I was going home.   I think it was the tape stuff but have to deal with it because there is very specific dressing that comes with it you have to use, can add other over if needed but have to leave the clear window so you can see it, and to have to change places require loading me up and hauling back to hospital. They are picky about who puts those in and out.  So they pumped me full of IV Benadryl through the line. Helped keep it under control and from previous experience I knew everything you see is not real ::)  Glad I didn't like watching TV, dang lizards (small ones)  kept coming out the back and going down the wall and into my closet. ::)  Other strange things, one day Riley was hiding in the closet and would peak out at me once in a while.  Talked to the people standing by the bed that weren't there, Rita saw that when she was there, guess my eyes were open.  Also if I watched something on the tablet if I looked up it was sometimes projected on the wall for a short time.  As they were able to back the pain meds and the Benadryl off it got better.

The time from when I got to the ER at the hospital was a big blur for the most part I got there and right away the checked vitals and asked a few questions and put in a line and gave me  mix of 3 pain meds ad a muscle relaxer and got me some what under pain control and took either an X-Ray, MRI or something similar maybe more than that, by then I was not real sure of what was going on or really cared.  They finally decided to keep my over night at least, not sure what else they would have done.  Sometime the next day they came and the culture they took said staph so they moved me to another room and proceeded to give me stuff through the IV, and I don't remember much of that, they were always calling Rita telling her what was up, probably me to but no idea.

I do remember calling my Mom at 2:30am thinking it was 2:30pm and scaring the hell out of her. ::)  Also developed hic-ups that ended up lasting 2 weeks and nothing help but cold tonic water or mineral water cold on ice, and that for just a short time.  Beyond that I remember very little at the regular hospital.  When I left there after 9 days I still could not walk, was only able to make five steps on day 8.

They did have the white count to normal, fever also and decided it was at least mostly out of my system and shipped me up the road.   They kept the antibiotics going till the day I left, 44 from the day they hauled me away till I got home and day 35 in Tabatha. Getting better by the day, still not worth a crap. But getting better.

Those kind of infections are ROUGH! Glad you made it. Get your strength back, enjoy decent coffee and kiss you Lady regularly.
Major, praying for Jonathan here.
Got a notice for Jury Duty so gonna go up to the Circuit Clerk's office today, as I am retired Law Enforcement. In Illinois, they just excused you right off, as no defense attorney will let you on a jury. I will find out if Arkansas is the same way. Anyhow, still a bit cooler today, but will start heading back to normal low 90s later in the week.

Several years ago, I was called yearly for jury duty. I would request an excused service as my work had me   traveling out of town.
I lived in St. Cloud, Osceola Co. and travel to ....eh! well, Orlando in Orange Co. most defiantly out of town...
They never asked, where or questioned it....
Now, I'm exempted by age if I desire it...I do   :)

I was excused about this time in 2020 because I said it didn't seem to do because of my recent heart surgery and the Drs. telling me to not go nowhere except an real important t
 one and they 'scusd me.

Actually got into the jury  selection pool for one in 2015.  Defense lawyer didn't think I was suitable because I eve seen him point at me as soon as they got in their huddle. Guess he didn't want a 30 year sober guy on the jury, probably didn't think I would be fair and listen to the BS, I would, I would, and he was guilty, college kid, hit a parked car downtown early Sunday morning and blew almost twice the legal limit because it was plain as could be the meter was off. ;D

Got a appointment with Heather the Heart Nurse what ever they call between a nurse and a Dr.  tomorrow, canceled because I was still in the regular hospital about May 15th.  Might be interesting because I normally am down a pound or two and I weighed 250.2 on my digital scale here and was about 275 last time in her office mid April.  Also we was going to see if I had another breathing type disease and we needed to work the angle of whatever I was having wasn't getting knocked down with the Z pack anti bug pill.  Looks like we might have been right. ;)

What, where is everyone at it's morning.   ;D

All those years of pretty much being on second shift I seem to have switched while gone, not sure if it will last because it makes no difference.

Riley is not happy, he glares at me, gets up and goes to the couch, glares at me and goes back to sleep till about 10.  Poor guy has lived that schedule most of his life.  Often don't go to bed with me ad someone let's him in later.

Do tend to nap in the afternoon if nothing is going on. ::)

Hola folks, 74 here right now, supposed to hit 94, if'n it doesn't I will not complain. Heading to the Doc in  a bit for my pre-colonoscopy visit. Oh joy. Waiting for a bowler hat to arrive, ordered last week, couldn't resist the sale price. I'm filling in behind the pulpit at Church tonight, as our Pastor is out of town. Del, it sure is good to have you back, the place ain't the same without you. Give Riley an ear scratch.

Greetings all.

Currently 82 degrees at 0530 for my day off work. It’s not half bad, if you discount the exhaust from the burn pits and incinerator settling over the base ::)

The last time I got called for jury duty was 2019. It was for a trial in Trinity County, CA, when I was a resident of Yellowstone county, MT. It was also a case where I’d had to provide a statement to the DA already as a member of the arresting party. I knew the guy on the other end of the phone when I called, and we both had a good laugh over the circumstance. I haven’t been called for jury duty since, in any county.  (In case you’re wondering, the trial was for a guy who killed his buddy while out on a hiking trip for taking the last tab of lsd. Other substances were also involved).

Presently 77° headed for 92° guessers say precipitation 25%

A new exhibit is coming tomorrow to its new home at the museum, an original WW2 era Liberty Ship lifeboat.
We have been rearranging space for its 26-foot length and 8.5-foot beam.

Morning all, 78 here right now heading to 91 today. Predictions are for upper 90s and 100s next week, yikes. It is Summer in Arkansas though, what else to expect. Just making a couple cups this morning, then headed to Conway to get a recall done on the Missus' Santa Fe. She was gonna go, but is tired this AM, so resting. My g'niece's softball team took 2nd Place overall in their League and 3rd Place in the last tournament last night. She got 2 awards, and they don't do Participation trophies here, so it meant something. Gonna stop at a small pawn shop after getting the car done and see what they have. Then home and park in the AC!
