Title: 1886 Winchester length of pull
Post by: Jubal Starbuck on May 28, 2020, 06:05:30 PM
Does anybody know what the standard length of pull is on an  original 1886 Winchester rifle?  Mine has a length of pull that is 13" which I think is a mite short as my nose is close to the tang sight when it's folded down.  I looked thru George Madis's  Winchester book but didn't turn up anything.  Thanks.

Original, with crescent is 13 1/4" on mine.

From the Arthur Pirkle book:  Serial 1-60,000 to 95,000 - Length across bottom (front to toe) less lip 14 3/8; length across top(front to heel) less lip 12 3/4.  Foot note: Expect variations in actual measurement from listed due to manufacturing tolerances and shrinking and drying...
Serial 95,000 to End - Length across bottom (front to toe) less lip 14 1/8; length across top(front to heel) less lip 12 3/4.  Foot note: Expect variations in actual measurement from listed due to manufacturing tolerances and shrinking and drying...

Shotgun and pistol grip stocks are different sizes.  Does not list measurement for carbines.  His book does not the Length of Pull from trigger to center of buttstock.  But the measures above should give you some indications of your situation.

Hope this helps with your evaluations.

If you are fairly tall (say, 5-9 or more), and your arm length is fairly long, you may not have enough "pull".  Don't forget, back in the day, the average male was about 5'-6", and the pull of most rifles was made accordingly. Only solution, if you don't want to alter the originality of the stock is to get a slide-on or lace-on buttplate extension, or maybe even buy a stock and have a recoil pad installed...not so much for absorption of the recoil, but to increase the length of pull.  Then you just keep the original stock.

Thank you guys for the information.  I found a lace on butt cover that will work to keep my beak out of harm's way.

I had 3 of these butt covers made with the adapter to shotgun butt for both of my 86's and my 76. adds an inch or two LOP too.

That looks good King, is that a make or a buy?  I may need to do that eventually since my 1886 has fancy wood, it would need a fancy butt cover.
